hmm... it seems to me that "tone" is a combination of many factors, including the instrument, the electronic processing (including the guitar's pickups, the amplifier, the effects, and the mike/PA system if used, the room itself) plus the way you strike the strings -- for example, if you play with your fingers vs. a pick, play with force or softly, if you play with a little or a lot of pick exposed, and so on. this debate seems a bit pointless - no one knows what fucking percentage of these things, and it probably changes all the time -- perhaps every time you click on another pedal or change your picking technique.
Man you’ll probably never read this, but 6 years ago I started my pedalboard based on your sound. I felt in love with the QM, and that was my first purchase. Still today, sounds like a beast and I only changed knobs as they all cracked. Massive thanks for introducing me to the Depths, what an amazing pedal. The layers you create with the Levitation are pure beauty: you gave me so much in just one video! My board is now complete with a custom pedal, over the years I added EQD, Dunwich Amp, Submachine Effects, among others. Hope you’re doing well my friend!
this has got to be the best pedal demo ive seen on youtube. All these other dudes wanna play clapton style blues. Your style actually puts these pedals to good work. You made the depths sound good and now i actually may consider buying it.
Sometimes when i grab my acoustic it makes this kind of voice and i just want to start and play parabol but i cant as a beginner 😂 but one day i promised it to myself!!
yeah that arrows will make you cut through the band mix much better. earthquaker devices know their shit. that pharaoh supreme is fantastic though. first time i ever heard about it (or the company that makes it)
I disagree, and agree. You can still get a lot of tones through attack for less distorted genres. But for doom generally there’s so much gain it doesn’t make much difference.
I have a theory that pedalboards like this that are meant for stoner/ doom are also good for showgaze with a few minor alterations. There’s a lot of similarities
Sorry to be late to the party but the tones mostly come from the socks, the pedals account for about 5-10% :D Jokes aside this is total killer riffing and sound, I love your playing too !!!!
This video pops up in my feed every few months it seems. For the folks asking about the amp, there isn't one lol... Pretty sure he is using the clarent kuassa plug in. Years later and I still love these riffs.
Hi Mattias, you've got some pretty dark sounds happening there. It's not what I would play, but I enjoy listening to you. Thank you for the pedal board demo.
I like either Pharaoh pedal with the Mantra LE. That's one of the few sounds I've been looking for for a while now. It sounds even better with the Arrows pedal mixed in
i like the the way you demoed...showing the pedals not just alone, but in combination to make your sound palette, because that is how you will used them in practice. but, i think your distortion/fuzz sounds would be better if you did two things: (1) use the pedals to color the natural distortion of a high gain channel on a tube amp rather than as the sole source of the tone, (2) put some better humbuckers in your guitar, like some seymour duncans maybe. It will make your sound more focused and clear.
wow, I didn't know that the Arrow sounds that great! very impressed, I think the weakest link is the standard Pharaoh in your board, still great but I don't think you'd need it next to the rest
The standard Pharoah sounds much better than that. The knob at the top left is rolled completely off,it sounds "better around noon or 7 ish..In my humble opinion that is.
After first watch: Super demonstration of what works well with what, what is stunning with what, or (rarely) doesn't seem to make a significant difference. Funny, once when the Pharaoh Supreme was triggered it didn't appear to be awake! Mostly I preferred the Mantra off, but one to combination it added really useful brightening. That Arrows is something else. You can quickly get tired of it, but in the right combination it's lovely. Thank you.
Nice! When you thought one Pharaoh pedal was enough... you were wrong! Nice set up brother. Ill have to show you mine in a min. Check out some Abominable Electronics items or Minotaur Sonic Terrors pedals. They would be right up your alley. My stoner/doom pedal board set up in order in the chain: 1. Electro Harmonix Slammi (for those low choruses) 2. Dungeon Master from Idiotbox 3. Hail Satan! Deluxe by Abominable Electronics 4. Lazer Muff from Idiotbox 5. Sonar Tremolo from Zvex 6. Boss NS-2 Noise Silencer 7. Afterlife Reverb by Fuzzrocious 8. TC Electronics Flashback x4 9. Anomalies Delay by Fuzzrocious 10. TC Electronics Nano Looper I have them all set up on a Holeyboard. Nut busting good*
Your sound is on point but I'm new to pedals. Looking for a starting point..like WHICH effects are commonly used??..not really looking for just brand names cuz most dont even say what KIND of effect they are..as of now I run sonicake's reverb, rain delay, blue skreamer fuzz ,chorus...and DOD deathmetal pedal turned down alot. I'm looking at getting a wah or even auto wah..what other effects are used?
metalehead95 That Mantra ain't no slouch either. It really drives the amp, especially fed by the Arrow. His whole board is ace. This is the tone I'm chasing. I think I need a new cab.
+metalehead95 It's a clean boost. Like the TC Spark or Xotic EP. It just increases the voltage of the signal, so that pedals down the chain (or the amp itself) get hit harder. Some of them try to be transparent and not change the tone, others can add warmth or subtle EQ. The Arrow pushes mids a bit as the knob goes up.
It seems i got the tone i was looking for by combining a pharaoh with a witch burner got a realy nice tight gnarly fuzz, now i am looking to get a depths by earthquaker devices
Awesome pedalboard! Just big sounding! i'm up to finish my setup for my stoner band and i'm curious about the ED Arrows and the job that this little thing can do in terms of boosting certain freq. But i can't afford the Arrows, so do you think that a microamp can do a similar work? Thanks a lot !!!
Great setup and nice combinations. Seems to me like Arrows does an amazing combination with most of the BAT pedals... ...which makes me ask you something: You made the Quantum Mystic work together with the Eau Claire at 3:47. Do you think that the Quantum + Pharaoh combination works great as well? (I have one Quantum Mystic, and I'm thinking to get one Pharaoh - but I can't test the combination, sadly)
I'm commenting again...lol I wanted to ask you, do you think I could get close to this sound wiiiith, let's say for overdrive, Abominable Electronics Hellmouth...for fuzz, Abominable Electronics Demon Lung...for reverb, EQD Dispatch Master....and maybe round it all off with the Earthquaker Devices The Depths? With those, do you think I could pull it off? I ask, because all I'd need is The Depths lol thanks for your input, and after many years....I still love this video, sound, and board!
How would you go about buding a sound that emulates an electricity arc. Is there a pedal that does that? I thought maybe the plasma OD with phaser and delay, but its still not synth enough. I have a GT6 but I really want a 1 pedal effect here for ease of playing live.
How do you feel about the EQD Arrows? I was considering stacking one on top of my Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest and seeing what kind of tones it would create.
Sweet setup, this demo is amazing! Where in the chain would you recommend the Depths pedal be placed? I see you have it after the green PH but not sure if that's how you have it hooked up or not so I was just curious. I'm also thinking of picking up a Depths pedals which is why I ask. Thanks for any feedback.
Dude I must have watched this ten times, your tone is godly. Now I want all of these pedals.
60% of tone is in your hands and technique :P
hmm... it seems to me that "tone" is a combination of many factors, including the instrument, the electronic processing (including the guitar's pickups, the amplifier, the effects, and the mike/PA system if used, the room itself) plus the way you strike the strings -- for example, if you play with your fingers vs. a pick, play with force or softly, if you play with a little or a lot of pick exposed, and so on. this debate seems a bit pointless - no one knows what fucking percentage of these things, and it probably changes all the time -- perhaps every time you click on another pedal or change your picking technique.
yo I don't think my fingers can self oscillate... am I doing something wrong?
With that said only 8% of guitar players can actually make shitty gear sound good
it's not the pedals, its the sock! You have to buy these black socks with light grey toecaps and stripe, then you get this sound
Man you’ll probably never read this, but 6 years ago I started my pedalboard based on your sound. I felt in love with the QM, and that was my first purchase. Still today, sounds like a beast and I only changed knobs as they all cracked.

Dude I came back here just to listen these tones. This vid started me on my pedalboard odyssey as well.
There is something magical about this video, I hope he could get the most of this pedalboard and spread doom…
@@Proceedtheweedian Amen to that. This vid and that board are something special
the toes of doom tones.

You're absolutely right. Every time I check out a demo of a pedal, it's some dude wanting to be Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Goctagon yeah so did I

Sometimes when i grab my acoustic it makes this kind of voice and i just want to start and play parabol but i cant as a beginner 😂 but one day i promised it to myself!!
Man, i keep coming back just to hear the intro and the first riff.....Absolute stunning. you have to record this!!!!amazing!
alex brown You're in luck! Google "Oarfish EP" and look for the Bandcamp link, it's so god damn good.
Lachlan Jadezak man you re a legend!!!!!! thank you!
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!! THIS IS SO FUCKING AWESOME!!! THANKS!
Holy shit thank you!
I've looped it and play drums to it... but won't share I think that would be rude
These pedal companies should give you some free gear, I bought the Eau Claire and Arrows based on this video!
Mantra & Arrows here. Already had The Depths. :-D
Same here bought the levitation an the depths
yeah that arrows will make you cut through the band mix much better. earthquaker devices know their shit. that pharaoh supreme is fantastic though. first time i ever heard about it (or the company that makes it)
Pharoah,and depths here.
Bought the depths cause of this
RUclips dudes in socks playing doom in their bedrooms.
Seriously, what is it with the socks? I like to wear shoes when I'm going to be clicking pedals constantly while playing.
I love it, old style RUclips☺
@Fureori Plenty of people wear shoes at home. I do all the time. I have my at home shoes and my going out shoes. At home shoes don't leave the house.
@@RetchedKat They go with my sweatpants.
Disproves the myth that tone is in the hands by showing it can also be found underfoot.
Remember, the tone comes from the socks
@@certifiedpossum8655 Nothing beats eagerly clicking on a comment to make a random joke and being beat to the punch.
I disagree, and agree. You can still get a lot of tones through attack for less distorted genres. But for doom generally there’s so much gain it doesn’t make much difference.
This sounds like stinky to my ears
board of doom. Sounds amazing. Specially the Arrows does so much to the tone of the fuzzes. once of my favorite pedals on my board.
Those 3 EarthQuaker Device pedals make a killer tone
I’ve watched this upwards of 2 dozen times since I found it 12 months ago. Thank you!!!
Damn this was a crazzzzy board in 2015 and all these pedals are famous now. You sound great man props
I bought a Pharoah because of this and the ProGuitarShop demo.
It's amazeballs.
I have a theory that pedalboards like this that are meant for stoner/ doom are also good for showgaze with a few minor alterations. There’s a lot of similarities
I agree with that. They both have roots in psychedelic rock!
Desert rock paradise, man.
damn, your socks are so stoner :D
Stolen from Beetlejuice.
I'm losing track of how many times I've watched this.Already got one of the pedals, only 3 or 4 more to go.
I enjoy your comments throughout this thread. : )
I keep returning to this video for tone inspo
That little guy over there, named arrow is the real deal. Brings life and presence to everything
Whenever I get lost chasing tones, I come here. This video is the perfect reference. Thank you
Thanks to you my pharaoh supreme has been my main pedal for my band astrofuzz for about 3 years, thought I’d swing past and say thank you x
just spent the last hour looking for this in my spotify playlists, man i love this jam ://///
Man so many good toans from a relatively small board. Good on you man! not jealous at all...

do you have any noise problems with it? Mine is pretty noisy (I use 1spot). Thanks
Alessandro Pocciati I have one also, but don't find it noisy. Could be the power supply?
I think so, I'm gonna try a new one. Anyway the pedal sounds great! Thanks for your kind answer
Pallbearer uses Earthquakes and are incredible. Great video!
Love this pedal board and ....those socks really add to it!
I now own a Levitation and The Depths. The reason: solely the start of this video. Thank you.
As many others have said already, I also watched this multiple times in a row. These pedals....mmmh, just tasty!
As the others have said, something special about this video, I’ve watched it a lot!

Used all my youtube accounts to like the video.
I've watched this so many times. Incredible collection of pedals... I need all of these!
Bravo! Everything is so well balanced and complimentary. Lessons to be learned here...
That's how I set the tone and high knobs on my pharaoh too. Most useful setting IMO, I think that's how more mids come through.
High mids > Scooped mids
Never not gonna revisit this video every few months
Sounds really good... awesome job and great tones
