- When a massive swell showed up in the forecast, just in time for the World Surf League's Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge, all eyes were on team Young Bulls - Hawaii's Kai Lenny and Brazil's Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca. The duo did not disappoint, putting on a show in huge Praia do Norte that won't soon be forgotten. Fellow Red Bull team riders Justine Dupont, Andrew Cotton and Pedro "Scooby" Vianna also scored some historic Nazaré peaks.

I've lived a mile away from mavericks and those ways are big but I would love to watch and hear the waves at nazare once.

I remember reading Surfer magazine. Waimea Bay was the biggest break at the time but they talked about Jaws. Here in Va. Beach it rarely gets over 3 ft.
@@bruceg.6282 couple hrs north its gets bigger. We had double overhead in Jersey/New York a few times this winter.

Pretty phenomenal that Kai has literally dominated two (maybe three?) water sports (stand up paddle where he won something like 6 to 8 world titles and now BIG wave surfing maybe Windsurfing too?). congrats Kai, your hard work & determination has paid off. 🌍🌊🌊 Stay safe.

Arguably surfs at the largest break on earth and is then surprised that he surfed the biggest wave of his life? What did he think was going to happen?
He was one telling (surf magazine) that prefers Jaws. But right now he understand why Nazaré is like adding Jaws with Puerto Escondido put both places together on steroids.

Incredible because they can reach a unimaginable speed in Nazaré waves, and in top of that make a 360º.
McNamara used to say. That the speed is almost the double from other big waves and we know why, because the energy that this waves have, only tsunamis can have more energy...
Other example was Iam Walsh (he love to surf big waves and snowboarding) reveal that in Nazaré he can reach even more speed than snowboarding (but the risk in Nazaré is massive compared to Snowboarding).

the wave changed shape and color. it looked just like a clip of kai at Peahi that I've seen before. It for sure doesn't look like any other wave in this edit.
@@IamTHEJealousGreen It does look a bit different for sure but I think it's just the angle it's taken from or something. Does resemble Jaws a little but it flattens out to quickly for Jaws.

Yes, until now (after 2011) when McNamara find this waves, no one die. Only broken bones, very close to some drownings, but no one die in Nazaré. The closest to die was Maya Gabeira...

It's so nice not to have some BS wannabe internet surfer show us for the first 8 out of 9 minutes how cool he is and the art of duck diving or how to blow your nose underwater, lmao. Not really. He had luck to catch a big wave with a barrel (very very rare in Nazaré).
Sorry but the reality is that he fell a lot in this waves (maybe because he's new in Nazaré), a lot dropouts from him.
