It's a gamble. Big surfing, dangerous shallow water surfing, crowded surfing... You can have the experience, training, equipment, money, partner... Still a great gamble. Just like contests. Pure luck!!! Believe me on that! You need only one thing to fail and you're gone forever. The higher the risk the higher the chances to fail. Good luck to you guys. After Mark Foo died I stopped thinking going bigger. I respect the ocean and our human limitations too much.
@Hippity Hoppity Yup. I prefer not to play with luck anymore. We can all miscalculate and that is already the minus that can take our lives. Miscalculating in a smaller wave is more forgiving. To be unconscious is to swallow water. You will have only about a minute to be found, if the person actually do anything right to save you. Not worthy! What I tell the kids today... it's much better to live til you're 60 or 70 surfing, then die early or be in a wheelchair because you tried to "weigh the gamble" and lost for the battle. In the end, even if you are famous, you will be forgotten real fast. You have only one life to live. But everyone see life differently. I get that. I stopped going bigger when I had my first kid long ago and I'm happy for that. I'm still surfing with my boys and there is where the value is! Bottom line is: you get ready and well trained to go to war, but when you actually go, you can die with one bullet only. All your equipment and knowledge goes down the drain with you. You will become just a name on the list.
The scale of waves seems to be a little bit exaggerated to me... We base height on the surfers scale but most of time they bind their knee and it's not taken into consideration.
