I would use an Ab7 (dominant, not major). The resolution from minor to dominant to finally a major 7 makes the G sound even sweeter. But there's certainly nothing "wrong" with Abmaj7 there, just personal preference

Dmaj7 is the I of D major Am7 is the v of D minor Gmaj7 is the IV of D major Bbmaj7 is the bVI of D minor Mixes major and minor The minor 4 iv and flat six bVI major are common chords used in mode mixture. They both contain one of the characteristic pitches, the notes that form a tritone in a major scale i.e. B and F in C major, the b6, of Aeolian (minor scale).
