Star Wars Stormtrooper Helmet Modeling in Maya - Part 1

- The Original Stormtrooper Helmet from the Star Wars films. This was a lot more challenging than I expected, but also very fun to model. I used Nurbs, Polygons and lots of deformers like Lattice, Clusters, Shrink Wrap, and various Non-Linear Deformers.

been watching alot of your tutorials, switching studios and need to use Maya from now on. Your tutorials are great for someone who needs to learn all the smart and fast workflows and shortcuts of Maya. Just wanted to say thank you for making them, saved me a ton of time!
Thanks! Glad you find them useful.
Thanks! I gotta say you have the best maya hard surface tutorials out there.
Part 2 and 3 to follow shortly.
This is great but I think you could really increase the value of this by adding commentary. Both to explain things but also make it easier to follow as it's quite a long ride of mind numbing music XD I'd rather choose music from another tab, and have the option of your commentary :) btw. great work, I instantly recognize the the work you put into your models and your skills
Best tutorials back in town!
thanks iplaybose for asking him to do it , and a big Thanks to you Alex for doing it :D , was really waiting for this one :D
aww man, and you've sped it up so much that even if i download it, and play it back at 0.3% speed, it's still flying all over the place :(
+Antony Quigley Well, it took me a total of 9 hours to model. I can't watch anyone model for 9 hours :) I could make some short videos focusing on specific parts and how I went about modeling them.
Alex Cheparev
Ok dude, thank you SO much for the swift reply. I can make the top part of the helmt (i made a full Jango Fett helmet even with the concave cheek pieces etc) as that was basic extrusion and vertext manipulation. What i'm struggling with, is how to move from the kinda standard Extrude down from the half spherical top part of the helm using Edge modelling, into making those spherical breathing tubes at the bottom, sides and back. Could you possibly just quickly put something together just simply showing me how to do JUST the bottom kinda ring of it where he speaks and breathes out of from front to back. So no eyes or cheeks or had etc, just the bottom parts. ? I'd owe you my life. You're one of the best 3d modeller's i've seen and as you probably know yourself, seeing someone do it in personn rathr than reading about it over time, there's no substitute

I like your channel, job well done!!! You have won a new supporter :)
Ig this was before you became a hit ;). So cool to see you here!
wow i did not expect to see you on this channel
This is so satisfying.
as a star wars fan this is super cooool! as a newbie modeler im having trouble when i need to draw and fix topology.. do you have any winning tip on topology fixing?
Not easy at all, great work
please show how you arrange images in viewport.
Can I get a normal video speed option? Even a speed of 0.25 does not help. It would help me with my thesis project in art-school
Hey, sorry, I recorded this a few years ago over 9 hours of modeling. I don't have the source captures anymore.
Thanks for not putting some seizure inducing dubstep under this.
very good
Hey, Alex, thanks for the great video! What did you do to turn the cube into that nice spherical form at 1:30?
+Reed Heisley-Shellaby I use 'Smooth' . It's in the 'Mesh' Menu.
+Alex Cheparev Thanks! Basic question for beginning modeler!
Great... Do you have Millenium Falcon modeling? also in Maya???
Ok I use blender an in kinda new with using reference images. How did you get this so perfect with the curves an rounding out the helmet
the link for the blueprint pulls up a blank image, would you mind checking it again?
7:04 you use a script, looks like to select edgeflows, where can I find that?
Great vid! How does the 980 perform in Maya? I'm thorn between that one and a Quadro (for games assets modeling). Thanks.
980 is great for modeling. Wait a couple of weeks though, GeForce GTX 1080 is coming out for $599 and will be twice as fast as a 980.
+Alex Cheparev I know but the 1080 will be €829 in Italy that's twice the price of a 980. I'm only worried by the fact that the 980 isn't listed in the Autodesk certified and tested gpu and really can't understand if a Quadro will or will not make any actual difference in modeling, ncloth and such.
It's crazy how much more expensive hardware is in Europe than the US. Anyway, nCloth doesn't use the GPU, only the CPU, so the video card won't make a difference. Also, with the introduction of Viewport 2.0, which uses game engine tech, the 980 will be much faster. To get an equivalent Quadro, you would have to get the M5000 or M6000, and those are insanely expensive. When picking a card for Maya, look at Texture Memory and Cuda Cores. 980ti has 6GB of memory and 2800 Cuda Cores. The M5000 has 8GB of memory and 2000 Cuda Cores and costs 3x more.
+Alex Cheparev Thanks for the exhaustive response, that's exactly the kind of response I was looking for. Usually Germany and UK have ok prices for tech but Italy is a different thing. Anyway just out of curiosity this's the specs of the Pc I'm gonna build, if it's not too much annoying would appreciate an opinion if it's the right thing to put together, again I mostly model in Maya/Mudbox/3Dcoat and build in UE4 and Unity5:
CPU: Intel i7 6700K
Motherboard: Asus H170 Pro Gaming
Ram: Kingston Fury X (16GB or 32GB)
SSD San Disk Extreme Pro Sata III 480GB
That will be more than enough for what you're using it for.
Can I use this blueprint in 3ds max ??
Oh yay
I dont know why but the link you wrote for the blueprint and reference is not working any more:( it says that "This item might not exist or no longer available" could u help me out here? Thanks alot
+lee victor Sorry, I forgot and moved them. I updated the links in the description, should work now.
+lee victor oh its working now! thank you for the blueprint and reference, and your great tutorial!
hey bro can you plz help me in colman lantern fuel pump dent shape
Can you show the whole video instead?
It was 9 hours of modeling. Would be really hard to edit and upload.
@@AlexCheparev sheeeesh. I watched the videos on like 0.1 speed but still couldn't follow along
can you give the diagram of the Stormtrooper Helmet pleas
+Lyper the gamer Here you go:

thx you
can you post one slower so I can follow?
Well, I think it's a good tutorial, but If this is a video for people to follow, I would recommend EDITING OUT anything that doesn't matter??? Like, the glasses you were doing, then you just deleted and started from the beginning?? That's just wasting people's time you know... :/ . But yea, thanks for the tutorial...
Даже на 0,25 слишком быстро (
Dude, my biggest probem, literally it's stopping me sleeping, Could you show me just quickly, how you do the kinda Tube parts at the bottom of the helmet? Even just one side... I'm literally just stuck dead on this part. I can't follow you and it's making me want to quit as i only have a day or 2 left before i have to leave. Basically the rounded tubes going around the bottom of the helmet, like the bearthing tubes, could you show me slowed down? Thank you in advance, love the model. Just so you know the, the Timelapse things are just awful for people who're trying to learn. Timelapse is more for people who know the tools inside out, know what you're doing and basically look at it and say "Oh he's doing it that way, cool" then turn the video off. The people who really need these more complicated Box + Nurbs merging tutorials can't follow everything you're doing at lightning speed. Thanks mate
References, please?
+Pedro Paulo I'll put the back up tonight. I deleted them by accident.
Alex Cheparev Ok! Thank you!
+Pedro Paulo OK, it's back up.
+Alex Cheparev So much thank you!
I hope next time can not enter the operational details and details 。
cant you untimelapse? i can't see shit :(
One trick that sometimes works is to hit the cog icon on the video (next to full screen) and select speed and slow it down to 0.25. Might work...
