- Sailing into Trouble: My Coast Guard Escort on the Way to NYC
Sailing videos might make it look easy, but trust me-until you're out here battling the elements, you have no idea what it’s really like. In this video, I face a tough challenge navigating Port Barnegat Light, one of the trickiest inlets on the East Coast. And, as always, I’m sure the "armchair sailors" will have plenty to say in the comments.
💬 What do you think? Was I being overly cautious, or is this just smart seamanship? Let’s hear your take below!

Finally, Sunday at 7:45 My new favorite almost real-time sailor. So proud, as a Veteran of you helping Mark. Looking forward to Bahamas trip. 40 years driving 18-wheeler retired. Authorities make my blood pressure go up. You sail so I don't have too. DNR in MN is called Damn near Russia. Dept. of Natural Resources. Coast Guard on Superior, nothing better, wish I had served there.
Cheers Captain Hudson!!! We will sail the Hudson river next week! Welcome aboard!!!!
I cruised that stretch from Lake Ontario to Barnegat and eventually Tuckerton, solo, one September five years ago. Left the boat in Tuckerton until the following September when my son and I cruised it back up to Lake Ontario. That was the best month of my life! Watching this video brought back all those memories. From running aground at Barnegat, to the harrowing cruise up the coast to Sandy Hook...and the five nights at anchor in the rain...to the two nights anchored at Liberty Island...and the whole trip back to Lake Ontario. I really appreciated your video, it brought back a whole flood of wonderful memories. I wish you excellent luck on your journey back home!
Glad to have you aboard!!
Hearing you talk with the sunset about getting home and that feeling of change, one part of the adventure complete and you might be off the water for awhile to work before you can get back out there. Thats the real deal right there, thanks for opening up and making these videos.
When I sailed from Bermuda to Antigua, I shot 15 episodes. You're right. I'm back working onset. Next time I leave the dock, we are never coming back until we circumnavigate. Thanks for commenting..
@sailingEV888 make it 3 episodes dude. You're dragging these out and it's less interesting. Maybe 1 episode per day you were out but 15 is way too many.
Happy to see one of your videos again. It has been a while for me, been busy.
Love to see a fellow Canadian take the adventures I am working towards and even cooler still, you used to be at the same marina as my cousin. In fact one of your earlier episodes have him sailing past you while in the marina.
Wished I was into sailing at that time, I would have said hello.
Excellent closing shot, NYC is so beautiful.
Great drone shot of Statue of Liberty. Good job!
Thanks mate!!
What an emotional video
Must felt empty when he left. Very good vid as always.👍
Mark and I talk all the time now. We are planning to sail together next season. He is a good man and Captain. Mark Brown.
@@sailingEV888 he seems great to be around.👍
I've been toiling away since July 2023 on my sailboat which is on the hard off the Toms River, just a ways north of Barnegat Inlet... when I bought it, it was at the north end of the Bay, and when I get her sailing again, the Bay will be my classroom. But in a year or so, I will also exit that inlet, so I have been researching it.
You were wise to be respectful- it is shoaly and can get pretty sporty with a big Atlantic swell coming in, regardless of tide. Add some strong wind from any quarter, and it gets very bad indeed. My Tahiti draws 4 1/2 feet . with a full keel and stern-hung rudder, but I am nervous already about it.
Other than having the USCG show the way, looks like you picked a good day, and you did a good job. Good luck making your deadline, and whatever you do, it you come back to that part of the ICW, stay the hell away from the Point Pleasant Canal, which makes Barnegat Inlet look like a picnic.
Another great video! Welcome back :) I look forward to seeing your trip back home to Canada 🏁
Just over 3 years ago made same trip from Grasonville md to Groton ct. We were totally warned away from Barnegat inlet, it's a powerboat inlet not sailboat due to shifting shoals. We stayed away, a sailboat we had been traveling with ran there for shelter. They had big problems...
Nice video......waiting for the rest of the trip!
We will be in 16000 ft of water 600 miles offshore in the middle of the Atlantic in videos to come in the next month! Stay tuned! Thanks for commenting mate!!
I fished and scuba dived many many years out of Barnegat inlet. You were very very smart respecting that inlet.
So happy to see your video! Were doing a refitting on our 65' power catamaran and were so excited to start our adventure!!
Ahhh. The end of your BS years!! Before sailing!! (Or motoring)
@sailingEV888 hahaaaa Thanks for following our journey! 🔥❤️🔥
Knowing the area is a huge help. My boat draws 6'4", so I'll call the tow boats for inlet info, and we'll scout it out ourselves too. That anchorage in NYC isn't the best, it's got tons of wakes.
I noticed that too. Really rocky anchorage. I will reveal my secret anchorage near there in the next video. Cheers Cap!
I'm guessing port Washington
As one adventure comes to an end, another one is starting.
6 months is a long time. But it also flies in the face of working to make money and doing a boat refit.
This is a great video, well done! When was this recorded, curious.
When you come back south stop in the Manasquan Inlet there's a lot more options for transients and some deeper water
Interesting!!! I'm gonna look that up now. Ever heard of winter livabiards at anchor anywhere? Or some sneaky spots to dock for free?
I listened to the Coast Guard. I wasn't ashamed using them to go out Barnegat inlet. Better to be safe!
Fyi ,,keeldragger kicking ass on his videos , catch up or be left behind . Happy days. 🎉
We came through there a few years ago , it was high tide but bot the seas where running , it was a washing machine but we got in , very very scary place ! We draw 5 feet with our center board up . Never torched bottom. Went back out the following day with conditions similar to your passage.
I bet non sailors will be like " What is he talking about? Looks easy!!" Once you have been there and witnessed it your self its a whole other ball game..
Will miss Mark… fair winds brother!
Another great video Michael! As someone who is already planning to head south next winter from Long Island I'm just curious what month this is to get a better idea of what the weather is going to be like. Thank you for the great content, especially the information on New Jersey. As much as I want to stay inside, drawing 4 1/2 ft I still may stay outside after watching your video, especially around Barnegat through Atlantic City. Thanks again!
That episode was shot around the 1st of October 2024. It's amazing how much warmer it is, the more you move south. Norfolk has almost no snow in the winter! Northern Florida is just perfect around December. Not to hot not to cold.. anything North of Norfolk in December get a good diesel heater.
Oh and watch out off the coast of Georgia. Just skip all that. Charlston to Fernandina is best. ICW can be tricky and a waste of time..
@sailingEV888 thank you, Michael! I just joined your Patreon as not only do I find it informative, but it's a lot of fun sailing with you! Looking forward to continuing the journey!
I'm a local boater from the area looks like you had high tide you wouldn't have had any problem at all have had any problem at all
I live , sail and power vessel this inlet all the time. Of course you can transverse this inlet with a 6ft draft. No, the charts a very clear about the north jetty. About the only time this inlet is crazy dangerous is when the sea state is equally crazy. I have actually surfed the south, outside shoal.
To me the only sketchy inlet , at all times, is Egg Harbor. I've never had issues with others and I draft 6ft.
Gona look into Egg harbor. Thanks for the info..
⚓️⛵️ -Jim
I draw 6.5ft and am currently on the hard at Silver Cloud Harbor Marina in Forked River, NJ inside Barnegat Inlet, next to others drawing up to 7ft. Enter wide from the ocean and head towards Oyster Creek. Hug the red bouys and motor through at high tide and you'll have few issues coming in and out. 😊
Good info! Those reading this comment make a note!!
Good content, thanks for sharing. ⚓️⛵️ Jim
You folks could have followed the fishing boat out of the light?
Yay🎉
How are things across the pond #1?
@sailingEV888 pretty stormy. Been hunkered down in anchorages and marinas for ages it seems... soon summer will come.🤩
@Sailorboynumberone same here!! It's -14 today!!!!
Free resource? Glad the USCG helped you out but definitely not a free service for those making questionable decisions on the water.
I guess you don’t check airspace before you fly your drone. The area where you were anchored and flying so sooo off limits.
Can’t you leave your boat somewhere and go home? Then come back to keep heading south further down the Caribbean? Just a thought
I'm returning from the carribean. I will be heading back soon. In fact, in the next 6 videos or so. Stay tuned!!
There is no such thing as being to careful especially when it come to your home so far away from where you live.
Man I wish I can join ur group, I have a 45 ft 2 master schooner back windows and all ....I'm also torontoian
Let's chat! Add me on FB. Michael Potts Ajax Ontario. I'll be in Toronto the moment the ice melts. Heck we might even be neighbors. Looking forward to meeting you. I'd like to so your vessel and have sundowners
Can you share your plot line via the internet?
I do enjoy watching your videos but remember ,regarding your comment @9:56, the USCG is not a "free resource". They're another branch of our military funded by US tax dollars.
Good point. You're right. I wish somehow I could become a US citizen. In fact, I would do anything to be one. I would pay taxes if the IRS would let me..
Or you could get a depth sounder.
I have both. In hull calibrated and hand held. In a tidal situation, when sails are up, the depth can change in a few seconds and your aground. I find a depth sounder just let's you know when you're going to run aground.. Hope you enjoyed the video..
@ Then don’t raise your sails, as you didn’t do this time, and go slowly.
LOVE MARK!
start a channel.
I told him that. Lol. He has trouble with computers..
The coast guard is so underutilized. Absolutely call them and get help before you need help from them!!! Same as police at home, they are there to help especially if they can help before it is an emergency.
Fully agree! Most people think they will get in trouble or be bothering them. They like to help out.
Unfortunate that you had to rely on the USCG. A call from Atlantic City to Tow Boat US or the USCG may have made the whole ill-advised trip avoidable. Patience is one of the most important attributes a sailor needs...followed by self-reliance. There's a reason why no one goes that way. Call the USCG in an emergency and for information, not because you didn't do your homework.
We spoke with boat tow USA. They advised us we could get thru at high tide and gave us coordinates to three spots that he thought we would have trouble with. I should have included that in the video in hind sight.
Glad you made it through ok. I've cruised the East Coast for 20 years and learned something every time I go out. Usually, from my mistakes.
