Sailing EV
Канада
Добавлен 27 мар 2020
This RUclips channel is a record of my attempt to be free and live a life out there on the Oceans. All I know is my dream of sailing endlessly and exploring this planet. It has consumed me for 3 years now and has been documented here.
I have worked so hard in the film industry as a 1st Assitant camera operator with IATSE 667 and its time I made my own movie. A movie about a man who up and leaves his life as a cinematographer and heads south on his floating home camera in hand in search of freedom... In search of an intentional life at sea. I have spent years working on films sets all over this country learning how feature films are made and I intend to use this experience to make a truelly entertaining RUclips channel. Follow along on my journey and help me with this huge undertaking. Make a comment subscribe and become a part of this sailing adventure. Now is the time to do what must be done when SAILING IS IN YOUR BLOOD.

Great idea. Only one problem. Not everyone has the luxury of just taking off for 6 months or a year. Businesses to run, bills to pay. I can afford a boat. What I am missing is time. So reality scuttles the dream.
I'm canadian feom toronto canada, I'm about to sail my 45 ft old schooner down to guatemala same time ish 😂
Are taking the ditch or the outside?
Did the NJ intercostal once…………..ONCE! Never again.
In the Summer that harbor has a lot of nasty "green head" flies back past Harrah's. Back in the early 1980's I was at the boatyard on the left as you're coming in and I saw two old mahogany speedboats on land. The names were "Tempo" with a number after each. I asked the manager about the boats. He said they once belonged to band leader Guy Lombardo. His wife donated them and were going to be restored.
Cool story! Love it
Great stuff Capt Mike. Thank you.
Cheers Mate!

Came into Barnegat Light inlet on a tow in the dark in the worse seas I'd been in. The experience was horrible, and I swore if I made it back out, I would never return. USCG advised me along with a few other sailboaters to stay 3 more days until the seas laid down. They checked on me every day by phone or stopped by. When it was time to go, the day was beautiful, and I pulled up anchor. Filled up with fuel at the marina before being escorted out of the inlet by the USCG. USCG are awesome. Will I return to Barnegat? No! I just found your videos, looking foward to watching some more. I, too, single-hand my PSC 34. When I left Barnegat Light, I sailed outside straight for Beaufort, NC. Be safe and fair winds. Maybe one day we will run across each other.
Grew up in south jersey , trust me cape may has plenty ty to do . Even during the winter months . My favorite jersey shore destination.
I love anchoring in Cape May. South Jersey Marina, good people there, say hi to Heidi.
Wow that’s a horrible chain of events getting stuck under that bridge.
Big time. That incident may have saved my life. Lessons learned. It could have been way worse..
$60 real dollars Converted to our Canadian frost back peso it’s a lot more .
yep you can say that again..
Wow sounds like the ICW is to be avoided if you have a keel ?!
The ICW proper is maintained by the Army corps of engineers to a minimum of 6 ft depth. No matter what at one point along her 1000nm ditch at any time you could run aground. The ocean is constantly trying to reclaim the canal. The ICW north of Norfolk is questionable for reasons related to tidal movements. It can be done with the right know how and that's what makes the ICW a must do. Its a challenge. I'm very proud to say I've done the east coast there and back and would do it again at the drop of a hat. One of my most cherished times in my life. Yes you can do the ICW with a 6 ft deep keel.
Bro it's bad enough the Bennies and Shoobies are invading our local roads with driving apps don't tell the sailors also how to cut through my state. SSSSSSSSSHHHH!!!!!!! take this DOWN!!!!
lol... hhhhaaaa
I don't like that knocking sound your diesel makes. Are you sure it's ok?
The Yanmar 2 qm20 is a great little engine. I have changed the head gasket twice now. I know its every part and sound. I love that engine. I used to just sit and watch her run when I first got EV. On the fly wheel are marks to line up the timing. She is exactly lined up. The cam shaft is good. Valves are to spec. The issue is the exhaust elbow. Needs relacing and there is a bit of steam coming out at the top of the day. There is a sound she makes when in perfect order. A knocking. each cylinder should sound the same and if the fuel system is bled right she starts right away no matter what. I'm pulling her out to send her away to be reborn. I think she has another 5000 hours after a rebuild. The engine is the most important part. I've been close to loosing everything and that engine has got me thru hell and back. But this vessel is underpowered. I want a bigger one and a bigger hull and 2 masts and a huge B&G chart plotter & radar. An AIS system with a massive GPS dome. Who said money can't buy happiness. I honestly think I would be dead if I hadn't got EV. She has saved my life. She is everything to me. Sometimes I joke when people ask me if I have a wife. I say "yes and she has a mast"
I ducked into Barnegat a few years ago due to tornado warnings in the area. We were able to tie up to docks where fishing boats got their ice. During the night a tornado passed right over our heads. The next day we went to Belmar Beach and spent three days there over the Fourth of July. Comparing Barnegat to Bel Mar Beach the fun meter went from zero to pegged on high!

🎯🙏🔱🙏🎯
Barnegat Inlet has a controlling depth of 4' at low tide with a tidal range of 1.5' to 2.5' and is notorious for shoaling. Good luck.
Actually I saw depths of 11ft on average all the way out. The coast guard escorted us. Maybe they have done dredging?
people paying you for this :)))))
I doubt Ill ever get back the money invested in this channel. 160 videos have been a labor of love and an honor to post. I'd pay them to make these videos. I'm in love with it. Its all I want to do. Its never ever been about money. Those who choose to join my Patreon know that I think. Buying EV has saved my life. Happiness is possible. I'm convinced that this is actually heaven when I'm out there. It really is. Before EV were my BS years (Before Sailing)
what is the tragedy ? dude ive watched your first videos from i belive hudson river to down south and left the watching . now i remember why stopped cause you are acting big stuff happening and using that microphone to fake people and create drama ?? sorry but its bad....and fake...
I guess when your actually out there things seem a bit more real. Poor mark didn't have the funds to relace that dingy. Its just a you tube video. I hope you were entertained and at the very least learned something.
safe journeys
Seems impactical, saildrives, shafts, props, etc are exspensive to replace and repair. I guess you have a keel as protection but any boat that doesnt would be asking for trouble.
It’s the gamble of life on the ocean. The rewards are worth it, but so is the risk.
I guess i am not understanding why you are not on the ocean. Both of you have boats that are capable of making the Atlantic crossing.
I agree. We sail 1000nm miles 600 nm off shore in the next few videos. Bermuda to Antigua. EV needs a refit. Sailing on White Diamond to Antigua as crew was the Experience of a life time. Stay tuned for that mate..
thank god the coast guard was present ...thanks guys ...🎉❤
They have saved my but sooo many times. US waters is the place to be. Not a worry in the world when here..
Let me no when u plan to sail to Jamaica ....
We need to talk. Are you there? Can we have a call? Add me on FB Michael Potts Ajax Ontario Canada you will see the green triangle. I want to sail to Jamaica. Its at the very top of my list hell I was 500 nm miles away from there last month on another yacht. I have so many questions.
we love your vids...
I would've been shocked if you made the inside passage work. Glad it wasn't worse than it turned out to be.
Mike- that high speed video section made me sicker than sitting in my cockpit during heavy swell..🤢
I'll work on that. No more jumpy time lapse
Some strategically planned groundings are not a bad thing, kinda.
You will always run aground at one point if your out here long enough. Just the way it is..
I was told 3 years ago not to do ICW due to it not being maintained like in years past. I have swing keel, only draw 5ft. 1969 Mercer 44ft sloop
I wish you could post photos in the comments. I'd love to see that yatch... any thoughts on owning an older vessel? Would you ever buy a new one if you could?
The 3 feet i probably weeds too.. You draw 6..so it cant be 3. Perfect route for a twin keel boat
I wondered why it says 3 ft. Got to be weeds. I'm just happy to say in future episodes the dial does not read at that depth. Try 15k feet deep...
Good episode, I liked the fog and tension of watching the depth gauge reduce
Well your in for it in future episodes. Just imagine it reading 15000 ft...
Running aground on the ICW is unavoidable. At least it’s all mud. You guys cruising south soon?
Mark is already in Florida. I'm preparing for leaving the dock and never coming back again. EV needs work! More than I'd like to admit..
Takes more money than one thinks . I can't wait

Nr 1
Feels like no 2.. No matter how good things seem... it's never enough. I will sail around this earth no matter what it takes. The problem is it's not that simple...
@sailingEV888 you are great!!! And if you think it's enough. Then that's OK.👍 Very good vids!!!
2 Today?
Well it's complicated. 1st upload was wrong and I'm worried about blonde jokes. Had to re-upload.. It's not easy out here Cap. Back in the old days they had a whole department to make sure creative wasn't wrong. It's just me an old sailboat and a camera. That's the truth..
Agreed, I'm hoping you reach 'old Sea Dog- Sam- Alluring Artic and of course Erik level. Your filming and narrative are excellent
My bet is sewage. Also where do all the other boats I see empty their tanks? Do they all go to a Marina? Or do they just flush it into the harbor? My bet is the harbor.
Hi Michael, I pushed the thanks button. I didn’t know any other way to send a donation to you. What was wrong with your engine that you had to pull it? If you received the donation, I’ll gladly support you. I enjoy sailing vids and you are one of my favorites. Thx. Bill in Fl
Thanks bill!!!! I hope to meet you one day and have sundowners!!
@ your welcome, Michael. If you are ever near the west coast of Fl, near St Pete, drop me a line. I’d really enjoy seeing you. Stay safe…Bill
Enjoy your content with the exception of your power boat bashing. Because the wake is inconvenient to you sailors all power boaters are suppose to yield is an unreasonable expectation. I'm local and have navigated the waters you're in for the past 40 years. Many make a living on these waters are are not out "just playing". Sorry guy, the reality is you're probably gonna continue to get rocked down here.
Camp LeJeune is a USMC base where the infantry is trained. Huge base.
We tried crossing and a squall kicked up, got caught in 25+ knot winds and 10+ foot waves. Genuinely terrifying experience. Best thing you can do is pay a good weather router like Chris Parker to tell you when your window is.
We used the Chris Parker weather service from Bermuda to Antigua. It was fantastic getting grib files 600 miles offshore. I'm totally sold on that service! Agreed! I crossed the gulf stream 8 times!!! its just a tough piece of water. Maybe best to motor if you have the wife with you of guests who are squeamish. Never in a northerly!! I mean not a puff of wind from the north!!
It seems like sailing is dealing with one catastrophe after another concurrently, all time, every day. Wow how you manage to keep your head is impressive Mike.
Honestly captain I think this is just what its like out here. Even on a new vessel. I dramatize a bit in my videos and probably should not post my embarrassing mistakes I just hope we all learn something. Cheers cap see you out there..
