Preach on about those wakes . . . the world needs to hear! (it's not about the speed, it's about the journey) Awesome Videos, keep them coming please!!
Hello, im from Germany and have been following your channel for a few weeks now, i really like your content. It really interesting to see sailing content from east coast US, mostl other channels i follow are caribean, or meditarian sea most, also crossing the pacific to French Polenesia.
We were once rafted up to another sailboat in a designated anchorage outside of a channel anchored watching a small sailboat race occurring just outside the harbor. We had countless power boats at full throttle, not just going through the anchorage, but also right through the small sailboat race throwing huge wakes to cut off the corner. It was highly frustrating and dangerous. We and the race officials started to use our air horns to get their attention and they were actually defensive of their conduct on the VHF. Whether you are operating a car or a boat there is something called common courtesy. Even if I have the right of way on a road I will commonly allow a car to turn first if they are in a challenging spot out of simple courtesy. So even if these boaters “believed” they were within their right in the channel there should be some common courtesy observed. There are too many boaters who do not understand the rules, do not have common courtesy, and I suspect they also are the same people driving cars without courtesy on the road. Know the rules, get experience on the water, and observe common courtesy.
Define a designated anchorage? Just because some boater dropped an anchor mark on navionics does not mean it is some official no wake designated anchorage.
In New England coastal waters it is very clear - designated anchorages are generally established by the local harbor master. If you do not have experience in the area you contact them and they can direct you to it. Also if you are unfamiliar with the harbor and cannot reach the harbor master a good sign is when there are many vessels anchored in a certain area. Even if it is not - again simple courtesy does not take much effort on the part of all boaters. As suggested - it is part of being a mariner.
Michael, you're soo right! I'm currently living on my 34' sailboat on the St John's river in NE Florida and even in the marina they speed in and out rocking the shit out of me. They don't have a clue.. just ignorant. Great video as always brother!
its early morning on the withalcoochee, im in my kayak, so peacefull just some bird calls and the sound of my spinning reel, then someone near by starts a lawn mower, its hard to escape anywhere for very long, just smile and endure😅
Normally I would agree with you Michael, but that area is a place I frequent. It's a huge tourist area. Tons of fisherman and tourism boats come in and out Calabash with high frequency. Expecting them to all slow down on a major waterway is kinda goofy. I know there are a lack of good anchorages in the area but your still the visitor in these peoples back yard. They live work and play there daily.
@@faircompetition1203 In the majority of the ICW there is no speed limit. While courtesy is one thing, there are limitations to damage caused by wake. In this case, being rafted together, directly next to a marked channel with no speed limit, some responsibility also falls on the boat/s anchored.
I was at a marina on a river a few years back and this big power boat with a checkbook captain kept going up and down the river with about as big a wake as he could make in a no wake zone showing off to his guests . Went on for about 45 min to an hour , then he came in to buy fuel . Nearly got lynched , they would not let him even tie up and refused him fuel . He was crying about hospitality and he needed fuel LOL - not a clue at all Must of been 20 people yelling at him . Happens all the time people have no respect at all for the other boats thinking a few seconds of their time taken to slow down is more important than risking damage to boats they are passing . Always the same kind of people .
Hey Captain Mike, have you ever considered doing a prop swap? You should talk with a specialist in the off season and see if you can get a four blade setup with a better "speed" pitch based on your engines operating rpm.
if you are not in a no wake zone then thats what you have to put up with. you cant expect people to slow down in a marked channel just because you are anchored there. They would not have to pay anything unless its posted no wake. why would you question why they want a power boat, same reason you have a sailboat because that is your preference. neither is better, just what is good for you. Stop complaining and move.
Its common courtesy. Even if it a no wake zone which it is posted lets say we had to anchor due to an emergency? Would power biaters knock us over anyway?
I grew up on Tampa Bay. I spent time on dozens of boats and with as many captains. Every one of them slowed down when overtaking or passed any boat anchored. That was the ‘80’s. Go figure.
Actually there is a speed limit in the waterway and every boat is legally responsible for damage caused by their wake . Yes they do not slow down , but it is because they are crappy people who do not know what they are doing .
I do understand your frustration but you didn’t show us the no wake sign. Is there a no wake buoy? I have experienced worst with power boats speeding through a no wake zone with no wake signs visible.
This is a close call and Michael is mostly correct. It depends on which side of that green buoy the boat is traveling. If we are looking downstream, the channel is between the fishing trawler and the green marker, moving to the right. Boats inside the channel are restricted to 25mph. Now the sailboats are between the buoy and land in an anchorage. The anchorage is a no wake zone also because it is outside the channel. The boat that blew by outside the channel and through the anchorage was totally in the wrong. But the boats inside the channel are not breaking any rules, to the best of my knowledge.
@@slory17 Yeah it all depends on whether it was a wake zone which is why I am asking. There are many places where it is permissible to make a wake outside the channel. I am certainly not familiar with this area which is why I am asking.
In canada its the same.im on the great lakes. Even a police boat waked us. Some people slow down half way which for some boats tbrows the worst wake. I think alot of them dont look back. We often have people speeding up to the marina entrance marker and alow right down. Their wake follows them in but in their view they slowed down. Often they get scoldes by other people and even the marina staff
I am familiar with a Dive flag, but is there an at anchor flag or indicator? It seems like there should be one telling other boaters that you are not under power by motor or by sail to maneuver at a moments notice. Perhaps one that is flown only while in a designated anchorage area. I doubt power boaters look at charts as often as sailboat captains.
None of those boats have probably ever seen the chart you are using. They live there an go through there all the time by memory. They are all trying to figure out why someone would be sitting on the hook like that right off the main channel. Maybe it's because of years of boating in the river around barges, but this looks like a whole lot of nothing to me. I get hit with wake off them around once an hour that taller than my boat an it's never crossed my mind to complain about it. Much less a bass boat up on plane. They cause more wake if they slow down to displacement speed. They are also not in the channel because they have almost no draft. They rarely ever need to be in the channel.
Captain you don't have the right to dictate what kind of boat people have , but they need to show you sailors some respect and, slowing down but cursing them out will just make things worse .
Have you ever been waked, well I have and he is right. If a boat is at anchor, show some fing respect. They do it because they don't care it is all about me,me,me. If they had it done to them then they might understand but I doubt it.
I'm hoping that auto pilot is heavy enough for a 40 footer, normally you'd use a hydraulic autopilot. He might get away with it being a ketch rig. But maybe not in heavy seas.
Captain Mike, don't forget.... most people don't know the rules of the road, and not even close to comprehending the rules of the water.... lol. Same thing happens to power boaters, you aren't alone in experiencing that ignorance...they would do the same to you if you were on a 40ft yacht.
It's not just "powerboaters" it's ppl in general. Most don't give a damn about anyone. Frankly that wake isn't jack crap compared to what freshwater fisherman in 20' fishing boats put up with in lakes. Asshole wake boaters do a number on us.
