It is so weird to hear about the unpredicatbility of voter turnout as an Australian. Here, you can have more faith in polls because you expect about 95% of people will turn up to vote.
Yeah it’s a real problem over here. Although it’s been better the past few elections. While I think many other countries have a higher turnout than the US, I think Australia is kinda an outlier in terms of it being that high. 95% is very impressive.

I think it would be hard to enforce mandatory voting in the states, both because the individual states’ role in running elections and the backlash it would receive from the public. I don’t even know if it would be a good idea if it could be implemented, since the issue is more about getting people to care enough to want to vote. I don't think Walz was trying to pretend he was in a warzone. He definitely carried a weapon in training, during war, or in a time we were at war. But he did not say warzone. I don't think he was trying to be deceptive. Could he have specified? Maybe, but I don't think he knew people would interpret it a different way. Personally, I served and have a meritorious unit award with 2 oak clusters and a Valor device (usually indicative of combat), but I've never been deployed to a warzone. But I served in a war--not everyone who contributes in a war has to shoot a gun even.

As a young adult in Australia I hated that I was forced to vote; as an older adult I now appreciate greatly. I don't think Walz was trying to pretend he was in a warzone. He definitely carried a weapon in training, during war, or in a time we were at war. But he did not say warzone. I don't think he was trying to be deceptive. Could he have specified? Maybe, but I don't think he knew people would interpret it a different way. Personally, I served and have a meritorious unit award with 2 oak clusters and a Valor device (usually indicative of combat), but I've never been deployed to a warzone. But I served in a war--not everyone who contributes in a war has to shoot a gun even.

As a young adult in Australia I hated that I was forced to vote; as an older adult I now appreciate greatly.
