- Wal-Mart says it is investigating a possible breach in the system that allowed thieves to steal the value from gift cards, leaving customers with worthless plastic.
Moral of the story, don't shop at Walmart.
It doesn't matter where gift cards are. Thieves have the computer system knowledge to steal. I bet a majority of them are the engineers or computer wizards that steal them. It's out of control.

Just place plastic around the gift cards. If it's ripped then the customer knows it's been tampered with.

As soon as you get a gift card, register it online. With name and address. Next never take the very first card on the stand and make sure no silver backing or numbers are shown. If the tab is missing or the silver is scratched off avoid that card.
Also there is another rare thing going around. Swap outs. When you ring up the gift card and the cashier "drops" the card than switches with an empty card and the cashier keeps your active card. You check the card and has no value or a fault on the mag stripe worthless.
Today is a bit harder with cameras on everyone. So it's rare but can still happen in small stores.

Sorry for the folks that bought the cards but Walmart is reaping what it sows. It treats it's customers like thieves so you get what you give.

No gift card is 100% safe. Just give cash. The recipient can use it anywhere instead of at one particular store, they are much less likely to lose it or foget about it. Gift cards are vastly inferior to cash.

"They got into the system" lol. No they are using computer software to try hundreds of combos of these cards, they go to the store, grab a blank card and take it home. They then try that "range" of cards.

Same here. Got $100 Home Depot as a gift. Went to use next day, balance was $8! Someone stole the cash over 400 miles away. Customer service said tuff luck since I wasnt the original gift card purchaser! Now I tell everyone NO GIFTCARDS EVER!

Omg this is not even... People went into the store took the card went to a place not covered with security cams and looked at the code either remembered it or wrote it down put the gift card back as if they didn't want it and walked out of the store looking inoccent
A gift card and/or a gift credit card has no value until you get it activated at a cash register that is inside the store you purchase it from !!!!!
Yeah but... After they write down the code on a paper or mobile, they put the card back at the original place, then waits for a buyer to purchase it so they can redeem it right after it.

i had this issue with an itunes card and when i tried to activate it, it was already used. and they say they cant do anything about it
Always go in the back of the rack to pick out your card in the stores hackers only goes first what they see in front of the rack i was told after i bought mine but i picked the first one on the rack should of went to the last one on the rack and further more they should have them locked up in a case where they wont get at them
It just happened to me I bought 3 of those one for each of my kids, they went to use them 2 weeks after, there was no money .went to costumer service they said some one used them 20 minutes after I bought them.
Same with me. But my gift card is inactive and they want proof of purchase because they said that my gift card was used on other sites I think is just Walmart trying to steal money from people

You go to the store check the codes. Put them back and wait for like a day. Meanwhile some customer goes to the store aswell and buys a gift card the ones you saw the code on and they pay for it. The money is added to the card then you redeem it on the appstore or wherever hoping the code is valid

Attila Rivera, In many stores here, there are racks with credit-like cards many various stores on them; you don't pay for the card, you take it to the cashier, & put money on the card like a debit card; then you give this card with credit on it to someone as a gift.
