The Ohlins is by far the best part of the SP. The adjustability is superb, and really makes a difference. Your 'hard' ride is not inherent, it needs adjusting to your preference.

Maybe an idea for a future video. When a bike like this has the ohlins fitted, ride it as delivered. Then get someone to set it up for you and have another go. The price difference to the standard model might make more sense, when feeling the difference. :)

I agree, as one of the main points for watching reviews is to determine “is this bike for me”, and when reviewers make comments about harsh suspension etc, without it being adjusted correctly, it can put potential buyers off. I’m sure set correctly this SP has to be better than standard? Standard probably set for road and SP for track from factory

@@TheMissendenFlyerSome main dealers have staff that can set up suspension properly. Brand manufacturers are missing a trick letting new bikes go to reviewers/testers if suspension not set up properly for rider weight etc.
Maybe worth suggesting ...if you haven't already.
Bike sounds a bit buzzy for my liking.

Another good review … always good to see u blasting around my local roads! I am often bombing about on these lanes on my RE interceptor, I will give u a beep and a nod should I ever pass u👍 I like the monster and looked at one a few weeks ago. Firstly I would say, save your money and buy the non SP, unless u are a rider that can really appreciate these upgrades they are not worth paying the extra. When I looked at the monster I found myself sitting on it but looking across at the new Honda Hornet which was also parked outside and I couldn’t help thinking how much of a bargain the Honda is at 7K. Right now the Hornet would be my pick of the middle weight bikes. The monster has more flair and better performance over the Hornet but but I don’t think it’s 5k or so better all in all. I love it when manufacturers bring out a really good bike that you can take home with a feeling of satisfaction with regards to the price/value for money. The Hornet delivers this and I’m not sure the Ducati does. Having said all that I do like the monster 🙂

This was my year to change my 2020 Street Triple RS for another middleweight, I'm in my sixties and much as I love sports bikes comfort ruled one out, so I spent two weeks going between dealerships to test ride every middleweight naked, the Yamaha MT-09 and MT-09 SP, the Ducati Monster and Monster SP, the KTM 890R, the Triumph Street Triple R and RS and finally the lovely Kawasaki Z900 RS SE, all the bikes had been upgraded, some just minor tweaks but others such as the Monster and Street Triples with major improvements, every one of these are great bikes and you genuinely couldn't go wrong with any of them, all are great fun and handling is tremendous, in particular the Street triples, the KTM and the Monsters, as for performance once again all are great but Triumphs new upgrades have raised the bar over all the rest, As for the Monsters IMO their upgrades are great for bragging rites but apart from looks and sound I found the SP identical to the standard model, perhaps someone with superior riding skills to mine could prove the SP the better bike, I loved the KTM for its fun factor but even though beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder I couldn't open my garage door every day to have the sight of the 890R hitting me, so I ended up choosing the Street Triple RS (in cosmic yellow) as I love its looks but even better Triumph have improved the handling, braking and performance of what was already a great bike, the great thing is that to the benefit of the biker all the other manufacturers now have to improve their bikes to challenge Triumph, I can't wait to see these great new bikes!

@@yonniboy1 I went the monster sp route because I found the triple engine a bit to flat in low to mid rpm compared to the ducati twin.
Also found the monster more comfortable with the higher more swept back handlebar and relaxed riding position for my 189 cm height.
In the end there is a motorcycle for everyone and it all comes down to personal preference.

Not so sure, the wonder and intangible joy of the earlier Ducatis was the open frame, the whir of the bevel gears and the thump & back note of the pair of open pipe Contis. I owned and rode a 1976 860 GT(e) and It was sound and joy (and roomy) and it was about the same price of a Honda 750 four, of the day. This bike is two thirds the price of my BMW 1250GS and looks about half the kit, but thanks for the good review, as usual.

I do love these front ends much more than the weird bug eyes on streetfighters and triumphs. Much nicer looking bike. Really like the gear segment too…… I’m in the market for a full new summer safety gear, and I don’t like leather, so this stuff looks perfect. Only problem is that I’m in France so it’s hit and miss on sizing if ordering online. Currently use the AGV carbon sport modular lid. It’s very light, but it’s a little noisy, and catches the breeze more than the previous Shoei, so the Schubert is an interesting option.

I was out on the little bike round the lanes before the rain this morning and came across a 'road closed' sign. Like you, I 'had a look' and of course I could get through, no problem! It's always worth a look as 50% of the time in my experience you CAN get through.
Interesting to see that the Buckinghamshire roads are as bad as the Cheshire ones. It's a nationwide problem of course as 'austerity' has cut to the bone the government funding to local authorities to maintain the roads. And through they do do repairs, they are no more than a quick job that doesn't last as that's all they can afford.
I used to have a Griso (1200 V twin) with termi exhaust and that sounded gorgeous. It howled on acceleration, and crackled and popped like a throttled back Merlin on deceleration.

Good review, Andy. Like you, I'd lean toward the standard machine. The SP does look good, for sure, but unless you're a track day fiend and know about setting up suspensions with precision, the standard bike will give you all you'd want in an everyday, real world scenario.
Of course there'll be those who'll never take their SPs on a track but buy it as a fashion accessory to turn up their favourite Hipster cafe and think, 'Look at me!!' You know the type....... 'I wear a Submariner, not a Sea Master'.😂

The Monster was designed as a stripped back, bare bike. This isn't. Fine for some, but I'll stick to my '95 Monster M900. Trellis frame, dry clutch, air cooled, L twin - the soul of what was Ducati. It still puts a smile on my face - the grin factor.

At that pricelevel, a few other machines springs to mind. I tried the standard one and it's a fine machine. I think I would go with the KTM though. But so many good bikes these days.
Thank you for this well done review mr Flyer.

Did it sound better in real life ? Sounded a tad tinny on the mic, the recent Street Triple sounded much better with the mic set-up...think it looked nicer too, personal thing though !

Ducati gives USA the DRL unlike Triumph, though you'll still need to order the various indicators. The bike does feel tall. Very nice machine. I think the quality is better than Triumph. The Ducati screen/info is way better.

I've got to get a test ride of a Monster some day and start singing the obvious tune by The Automatic, sigh !
It's not revenge of the white vans on this review, it's revenge of the road cones, I guess the white vans were trying to avoid the road closures ...
You did compare the Monster to the Striple, so if you had space in your garage (yes you've said it's tight !) and the spare cash, this or a Striple ?

Usual great review and an interesting contrast with the norton and triumph. To answer the critics i find the triumph (so called british) marketing far worse than ducati. In my view i always find ducati something special although we all know the servicing costs are high. For me triumph comes below all the major Japanese bikes. I would take that bike over triumph and norton all day although as you say no need for stiff ohlins for normal road use. Thanks again for your excellent and lets not forget free entertainment.

It is a great looking bike but like many have said it is very pricey in this segment. In fact the price is getting close to the V2 Streetfighter which is way more powerful. The question is Andy, at this price do you go the whole hog and just buy V2 Streetfighter anyway? Great review as always mate. Ride safe.

I have loved my Monster Ducatis, and the 2 Monsters I had - a 2006 S2R1000 air cooled, and a 2008 S4RS Testastretta... the S4RS was a lot faster, and really needed the Ohlins suspension. I went with Japanese 4 cylinder sportbikes for years after, and always missed the Ducati rumble and dry clutch rattle. I wish I had one today.

Great review TMF. Now that looked fun! I love this bike! A bit too pricey imo but I'm just poor lol. I think this & the Triumph Street Triple RS are the two best premium middleweights about. The RS beats the SP for value (& bhp), but the SP evidently isn't slow, has more torque & is better equipped, as well as dare I say being a bit sexier too imo?

It’s obligatory to disobey road rules on a motorcycle imo Mr Flyer.
If you’re at risk of dying every time you go out there needs to be a benefit, and getting around traffic restrictions is number 1.
    Nice bike btw.
