- I've had many people over the years ask me why I like to read books about trauma, grief, and loss. I decided to explain with some examples of literature that has helped to heal me.

An excellent video on this topic and very brave of you to share your personal experiences AJ. Reading definitely has the ability to let ourselves relate to something fictional while making connections to reality - for many things, trauma being one of them. I have read most of these books and have loved them because they do capture raw emotion. I still need to read Hillbilly Elegy and will add This Boy's Life to my TBR. 💙💙
💗 I appreciate the trauma fiction and nonfiction & what it does for many (and am thankful it is there for those that need/ find solace in it).
I went through some very similar things (single parent who was gone a lot, latchkey, grandmother who raised me, sexual trauma) but reading it on page isn't healing for me. (I have read 3 of the books you held up)
I love hearing your heart, AJ . 💕
It's absolutely not for everyone. I know you're surrounded by love. 💚
I just want to wrap a big old blanket around you in a hug A.J. Thank you for sharing so beautifully the power of bibliotherapy. Your honesty is inspiring & I only hope you know how wonderful a person I think you are.
Thanks, Karen. I appreciate it. I'm very open about my life and what I've gone through. I'm strong because of, and in spite of, it. Still learning and growing, though! 💚
An excellent topic to address! I’m with you in finding healing, comfort, and understanding through traumatic fiction. I appreciate you sharing some of your experiences with us. You have a huge heart and are truly a wonderful human! 🖤🖤🖤

What an excellent explanation of bibliotherapy. Thank you for sharing your story. I think that even if the reader hasn't personally experienced the trauma portrayed in a book, the insight and empathy that can be gained is so valuable. I've been meaning to reread This Boy's Life for awhile. I'm really glad you now have a strong support system.
Absolutely. 💚
Thank you AJ for talking about your experiences and your story and sharing how literature has helped you. Big hugs to you and glad you have such a good support system today. I have certainly found that literature and especially memoir have helped me process my own feelings and experiences. ❤️
Thank you so much! I'm glad it has helped you too. 💚
AJ. You put to video so many things that I could relate to as well. You are so transparent and honest. And your bravery is apparent. I’ve missed seeing you and listening to your thoughts on books and life. Thank you my friend. ❤
I don't really think I'm brave. I tell everyone anything they ask about, generally. I'm an open book. I hope I can help other people be brave, though, if that's what they need. 💚
@@AJDunnReads I think bravery also includes opening your story for the benefit of others. Survivors of trauma do often keep things secret out of a feeling of survival and shame when there is no shame for the survivors. Only the perpetrators. Your story is valuable to many of us.
I very much agree with everything you said. Thanks for sharing. I hope this video finds its way to the people who need it.

❤ Thank you for sharing. 🙏 I can relate to this a lot. Reading can really help in the healing proces.
It's good to find solidarity. 💚
Thank you, this was very nourishing and relatable.
💚
You are right about everything you said in this video. 👍🏻
💚
Thank you for this! ✨🙏🏼💓
💚
Thank you for this.

Have you read Colton Haynes’ memoir Miss Memory Lane? I really thought it was a strong work that dealt really frankly, openly and clearly about his SA by his uncle and then how it unleashed a hypo sexualism in his teens that was so destructive for him and created really bad cycles of behavior for him. I think his book could help a lot of people, but it was unfortunately dismissed by most people despite good reviews.
@@bookofdust I haven’t. I’m not much of a memoir reader, generally. I’ll make a note of it. 💚
@@AJDunnReads Well, if you can get through Hillbilly you can get through anything! I suggest doing the audiobook.
