    Don't beat yourself up on the yellowing leaf! Judging from the small size and that it's the most outter leaf, could just be an old leaf that has lived it's life. For every new leaf (or two) on my alocasia, I find that the most outter leaf shrivels, goes yellow and die 😵💩👋🍂

    • @jessypotplants
      @jessypotplants  5 лет назад +1

      Aw thanks mate! I hope so and that it wasn't because i was neglectful! perhaps i havent had enough growth on my alocasias to witness leaf dying yet but this might be a first! (although pretty sure one of them was a dead baby :( )

    • @ladyhangaku2072

      @@jessypotplants for me, it also looks like that both yellow small leaves are on the outer part of the plant, so they really are just older leaves. Every new leaf is usually bigger than the ones before, so don't worry :) as I heard from others, alocasias are little divas and shed there leaves everytime something a little stressful happens... I just received my plant from Esty because I fell in love with the plant last year from physically getting one from HD. Of my 4 leaves 2 are yellow and I'm disappointed. I contacted the seller and waiting.
      To make sure I'm going to take care of this baby.. it will get a good 4 hours sun..i will plant it under some other tropical plants i do so it doesn't get too direct..(in watching her video)
      Any advice you can provide would be great.

    I mist my Calathea Orbifolia every day and it's doing so well. I thought my little Stingray would enjoy it too... don't do it! The leaves got sick I think, and turned yellow... my Stingray now only have one stem left! A new one has grown from it but I'm not sure if it will ever be able to grow into a "full" plant again. One small leaf on my Zebrina has started to droop and turned yellow around the edges and some of the bigger leaves are dripping water from their tips - I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to Alocasias...!

    • @jessypotplants
      @jessypotplants  5 лет назад

      aww im sure youre doing your best! how is it doing now? are you still watering it that much? would suggest repotting the alocasia as it might have a case of root rot if the leaves keep dropping off!

    • @penboidesign
      @penboidesign 5 лет назад

      If they are dripping water from the tips of the leaves that’s the plants way of getting rid of excess water, sounds like your overwatering that would also explain loosing leafs. The water droplets is called guttation.

      @@jessypotplants I haven't had an issue with tropical plants really, although I mainly stick to ferns. I think because it's quite wet in the area of Tassie I live in that it might make it slightly humid for them? The temperature doesn't seem to bother mine much as far as I can tell. Hopefully I can help out here - it will depend on the plant (so my orchid has a different soil mix than my regular houseplants) but I use a mix of 30% orchid bark, 20% perlite and then the rest regular house plant soil. I had no idea about avoiding the misting on the leaves and stems! I've been going at it with the mister like crazy so I guess I'm just lucky nothing's gone wrong yet! Thanks for that tip. Saved me a lot of trouble down the track. I will say though, don't you think that they might like a BIT of misting to keep the spider mites at bay? That's just my thinking. :)

    • @jessypotplants
      @jessypotplants  5 лет назад

      That's a fair point! Humidity is a tricky one I must say cos it depends on so many other things like lighting and where I'm keeping the plant (high or low). For my guys I think the locations I keep them in are quite humid so spraying them have just made them too damp and I found fungus/ mould on the begonias D: but a light misting never hurt nobody either! Other ways to keep the air humid to fend off the spider mites, can be leaving a container of water near the plant or using a diffuser!

    • @penboidesign
      @penboidesign 5 лет назад

      In my experience they love being misted, however if it’s a very damp environment and you have absolutely no air movement then that may cause a fungus problem so maybe open a window for I little bit of fresh air, but no cold air for these

    I just got a tiny dancer alocasia. I have it in a room with filtered southern light (in the US). So the room is medium bright to bright, but not actually direct light I'm thinking that might still be too much light for this plant. It might do better in a room that gets much less light, which for us in the USA would be a room that gets northern light. I am struggling a bit with the light level since I've seen articles that say "low light" and seen many articles that say to use "bright, indirect light". Seems like nobody really knows for sure how to care for this indoors. Thoughts?

    • @jessypotplants
      @jessypotplants  4 года назад +1

      Heya Nancy! Southern light is always quite bright for a plant - if you keep him 6 ft from the window that should help! Or if you have some sheer curtains, you could hang it over that southern window to create that filtered light!

Hmmm - how old are the 2 big leaves trying to keep themselves upright? It could be the leaf just nearing the end of its life which is ok! My alocasia zebrina leaves live for generally 3-4 weeks before they start wilting. A general rule of thumb with alocasias is that you dont really need to prune them - unless their old leaves have well and truly died (which is fine!). Does your alocasia live indoors?

    • @moragclark7839
      @moragclark7839 4 года назад +1

      jessypotplants Hiya!
      I bought the plant nearly a month ago and the 2 biggest leaves look okay. The new shoot is the second to come through. The first of the new shoots is the same height and size as the biggest leaves! It grew very fast. And though I am being very careful with the watering, only doing so when it is dry to about 2 inches deep,it is growing quite tall and that is why I’m concerned, because the the tallest leaves seem to be bending under their own weight. I am very new to house plants and I didn’t actually think it would survive this long considering it was very cold a month ago, around 6 degrees Celsius. One of the 2 smaller leaves has a couple of yellow spots with brown centres??? I fell in love with this zebrina and I really don’t want to kill it. Ha!...I just about had a heart attack when I saw that you shouldn’t really cut off the petioles. Another you tuber said it was okay but they weren’t very specific about the right circumstances....I am really grateful for all the advice you can give.
