The entire song is genius he's so fully aware of every tortuous minute of love's longing yet he will not abandon it because to do so would be a betrayal of his own heart a betrayal to love which is ultimately the only thing that's worth losing all else for. It hearkens back to lines in "I Threw It All Away" namely: "Love is all there is, it makes the world go ’round - Love and only love, it can’t be denied - No matter what you think about it - You just won’t be able to do without it - Take a tip from one who’s tried." The other thing I find interesting is that the background din of the audience in the recording increase the tragedy of Bob's words in their juxtaposition with audience chatter and laughter. A great example of this is when you hear a woman laughing precisely when Bob sings "I see lovers ... " 2:12 but he doesn't complete the line. 🙌
