This Dave Thomas not being a household name is criminal. All of SCTV should be as famous as Candy, Moranis and Levy.
Don't forget O'Hara, Martin, Short, Ramis, and Flaherty
Don’t forget Catherine O’Hara! They’re all masters of improv. John Candy and Catherine O’Hara’s scenes in Home Alone were all improvised.
@@user-ld9tf4td8s unless someone redefined the word "all" before I finished typing I didn't forget anyone...
@Ahzpayne except the list of names I added are all as famous as Candy, Moranis, and Levy
Time for them to get some Joe Flaherty in One Crazy Summer
"Well, no point in steering, now." *crosses arms
Dang, that had me rolling😂
I've been using that as my motto for over 40 years now because of this movie.
"Who's Mel Blanc?"
That was possibly the most disappointed sigh I've ever seen. You could almost see his soul leaving his body.
To her credit she recognize the voice but no the name... God bless emily ❤
I don’t know if I will ever fully recover 😂
😄
Oh sweet lord you’re watching Strange Brew!!!! See this is one reason why I watch you guys, you’re watching the classics no one else does. Thank you for doing this one. Beauty movie eh?
I'm so glad someone finally reacted to this.
Just some quick notes, mainly as a Canadian to any non-Canucks:
1) The Beer Store-- not a single store, but the Ontario chain-- still exists.
2) The cop was played by Canadian comedy icon Tom Harvey, the epitome of the comedy straight man. Some may remember him from John Byner's show BIZARRE, which was a mainstay of Canadian comedy reruns for aaaaaaaaaages (and from where we get Super Dave Osbourne).
3) Of course, it's all just hosered-up Hamlet. Hell, the brewery's even named Elsinore.
4) It was a big deal that Max von Sydow showed up in this. He was never as goofy on screen again, and he brought his usual dignity and professionalism to it. Those very few international actors who would appear in Canadian movies at that time (Richard Burton, for example) always let you know how much they were slumming it for a paycheque.
5) FWIW, the loonie didn't exist at this point. That was still four years away.
When this was filmed, the store was called "Brewers Retail", the name change to "The Beer Store" is a relatively recent thing, 1985. (per wicki) The filmmakers were also banned from filming in a Brewers Retail store, and from using the name "Brewers Retail". The filmmakers instead built a replica of a Brewers Retail store at a cost of more than $45,000, calling it "The Beer Store". Filming also took place at the Old Fort Brewing Co. in Prince George, British Columbia. The emergency vehicles used during filming were all real Metropolitan Toronto Police squad cars. The ambulances used briefly were on loan from Metropolitan Toronto Ambulance.
How about the toonie?
STAR WARS as well
I adore that Mel Blank plays the dad off screen! Two of my favorite movies are Night Patrol and Hysterical.
I grew up watching Great White North and the McKenzie brothers and listening to their albums. Still quote this movie from time to time.
"I'm taking you to the loony bin!" is said by either my wife or me, one to the other, AT LEAST once a month in our house.
We've been together for 30 years. The threat feels empty now--I've never gone to the brewery or the loony bin...
the FUN-est movie I've ever seen. I've been using "eh" and "hoser/hosehead" for 40+ years. I love this movie and these characters.
I quote this almost every day!
If you're not Canadian like me, that's cultural appropriation, eh! 😂
Another one of the movies I grew up on.. my sister is also a huge sctv fan. My dad used to rewind and replay the dog rolling up the house roof every time we watched it lol. My older sister also used to "steam roll" me all the time as a kid .. we really have a Bob and Doug relationship... including making fun of eachother and laughing at movie quotes we love!
During the credits scene, Rick Moranis said that’s the drunkest he’s ever been.
"All I've got is two 5's" is the most underrated quote 😂
5:29 Sadly, this isn't part of the joke, this is what state-run beer stores were like in various parts of Canada, especially Ontario, when this movie was made.
Why "sadly"? And are they not still? It's been like 10-15 years since I was last in The Beer Store, but it was still run that way then.
@@JakkFrost1 Lol, you might be right, most of the Beer Stores in my area closed down, so I assumed they were either obsolete or updated by now. "Sadly" because those places are so dingy and getting a consumer good that way seems like being in a communist country in the 80s.
Back then it was called Brewers Retail .
This is absolutely one of my favorite movies from my childhood. It is so stupid, but I love every minute.😂
Strange Brew is the great Canadian documentary of all time
I used to watch SCTV when I was a kid. Great White North was always one of my favorite sketches from that show.
I loved SCTV and Strange Brew in High School. The reason they created the McKenzie Brothers is a laugh as well. Since SCTV was a Canadian show, the broadcasting laws back they required that the show had to have a certain amount od Canadian content, so Dave and Rick came up with the brothers and their show The Great White North.
They said "We're Canadian, doesn't that make *all* of our content Canadian content?" The bureaucrats said no. So they said "Okay, you want Canadian, we'll give you Canadian, you hosers." And they became absolute legends in Canada.
I heard also that also that as the show was being made for USA TV, which had more commercials in the breaks than Canadian TV did, they needed short filler skits for the Canadian broadcasts. Just wondering... would there have been a "Red Green Show" without Bob and Doug blazing a trail?
I have loved this movie since I was a kid. There are almost no reactions to it so I am glad to see ya'll do it.
Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis were on a sketch comedy show called SCTV which aired on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, a government funded network.
When a government mandate was issued saying a certain percentage of the show had to be "distinctively Canadian programming" the cast thought it was absurd.
As a sort of sarcastic protest, Thomas and Moranis decided to just put on some toques and parkas and drink beer in front of a map of Canada, just improvising moronic Canadian stereotype talk to fill the requirement.
They were quite surprised when It ended up being the most popular segment of the show, leading to a best selling album and this movie..
My enjoyment of the McKenzie brothers increased by many magnitudes when I found out this backstory behind the characters. I've also heard that in the original SCTV segments the beer they were drinking was real. They would just get tipsy and improvise for 20 minutes and then just use the best 2 minutes for which ever show they were taping.
6 year old me loved every minute of this movie
One of my all time favorites, I and a friend dressed as Bob and Doug for Halloween one year, including the mouse in the bottle.
It was weird as hell hearing Mr Spacely yelling at the brothers. Mel Blanc is a master.
Or Yosemite Sam
With a Canadian accent eh?
SCTV was a staple for me throughout highschool, they were my homework companions Lol 😆
Best adaptation of Hamlet ever.
Second best in my opinion. The Reduced Shakespeare Company is fabulous in their rendition.
It’s a beauty
STAR WARS as well.
This was the very first movie on VHS I ever bought (it was in a little video store in Philly and the store attendant didn't know this movie when asked I for it and he asked me if it was a "blue" movie which were kept out of public view behind a curtained door) I've seen this movie in its entirety or in blurred bits and pieces like this on YT about a hundred times. I have memorized almost all of the dialogue but I still ROTF LMAO every time.
I always found it funny how the basic story of Strange Brew follows Hamlet.
I've had the nickname "Hoser" ever since my friends and I saw this movie back in the day.
Come December, I propose you do an audio review of Bob & Doug's "The Twelve Days of Christmas."
I forgot all about that. Thanks for the bringing it up.
Take Off 😉
@@user-ld9tf4td8s10 bucks is 10 bucks.
Seconded
Mel blanc is a living legend and did countless voices throughout his career
Well he is a legend.
Not exactly “living” though.
@@radiodadto1152 he was a legend in his own time I think would be the phrase the OP was looking for.
Yosamitty Sam is my favorite.
The Brewery scenes were filmed at the Brewery here in Prince George, British Columbia. It's right down the road from where I work. Looks nothing like it's Matte Painting. lol
In case anyone hasn't mentioned it. Some Canadian provinces have their own government run beer and liquor stores. It's not like some US states where you can get alcohol at a random gas station. I live in Ontario and we have beer stores here
I've said No Point in Steering Now, eh? Since 1983, seems like yesterday.
That line was a highlight in the movie. My friend, who went to see this with me at the theater, just about busted a gut laughing at it. We both used it quite a bit at school or just cruising the mean streets of Evansville, Indiana.
I HAVE USED THAT LINE MANY TIMES THROUGH MY LIFE, MANY TIMES TO MY SOLO AMUSEMENT
YES! A Canadian classic movie! Since I haven't started the video yet I'm gonna pre-emptively say; yes some Canadians do talk like that lol
Who is Mel Blanc????!!!!! The voice itself was him doing Yosemite Sam from Bugs Bunny Cartoons....OMG I feel old. At least the voice was familiar that saved it a bit
" That was no goal eh, they were in the crease" one of my fave lines. My birthdate is 10/21/59 like on the video game. "There's no way I wreck this truck eh, it's a beer truck eh"
This movie came out during my college years and we watched it over and over. Quoted it frequently and told each other "Take off Hoser" for any reason. Enjoyed the movie so much we named one of our kittens Hoser. It is a fun silly movie.
Im glad I'm not the only one that has seen this growing up
Sicario, Hereditary, Midsommar, Everest, This Is the End, Pain & Gain, Running Scared(1986 & 2006), Se7en, Captain Phillips, Smoking Aces, Bad Words, Horrible Bosses 1 & 2, Elysuim, Ghostbusters 1 & 2, The Green Room, Law Abiding Citizen, Prisoners, Fury, Batteries Not Included, Better Off Dead, The Martian, Club Paradise, Wildcats and The Kingdom(2007) should be added to your already long list of movies to watch.
Now for "Canadian Bacon" to hit the line-up
Agreed
Trailer park Boys lol
If SCTV is available to view, I would recommend watching that. SCTV is how we got to know comic actors who eventually made it big on the big screen. Movies used to be more of a treat over TV before it was so easy to view movies as it is today.
This is largely why the movie "Ghostbuters" was so amazing. Actors from both Saturday Night Live and SCTV team up to fight ghosts. (Plus we had the "Alien" actress included.)
It is amazing that a move with same production values as the TV show ever was produced and released. This is the earliest TV show to be in a theater that I know of. I think the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special was next in 2013.
The OBVIOUS STAR WARS influence in this movie is UNDENIABLE. Sydow is Vader, her dead father represents ObiWan , Rosie is Han , McKenzies are Chewy and Luke. Not 100% with some changes to whom representing whom, but they also metion Star Wars several times to make it IN YOUR FACE, loved that as a kid, and loved SCTV
That and the actor who played Rosie (Angus MacInnes) was Gold Leader in Star Wars.
I remember watching this movie a lot on HBO in the 80s as a teenager. Haven't seen it in probably close to 30 years. Thanks for taking me back!
5:25 Canadian here. I've never seen such a store outside Ontario. While the classier "proper" wine and liquor are sold in normal gov' alcohol store, low-class "filthy" beer is often sold in such sterile strict stores in that province, instead of offered in private grocery/convenience stores.
Oh my lord , my childhood in the 80’s my late mom used to rent us this from Hollywood video on VHS ! Oh man I’m dying and misisng my amazing mom . 💜 Thankyou for the memory
I made it about half way through until I realized this wasn't the movie I thought it was. For some reason Strange Brew and Canadian Bacon keep getting switched around, the whole time I'm thinking "John Candy, Now?"
Classic movie. So happy you are watching this movie. Take off 😂😂
G'day, eh?, and welcome to our comment section. You guys watching this was just beauty, eh?
One of the most gaspingly hysterical comedies ever made. Certain scenes still put e into the "ugly laugh" every damned time. It's also, by far, my favorite version of "Hamlet". No hoser better hork my copy, eh.
14:53 Yooooo, ⏸️ Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis! No Diddy! 🙅🏿♂️😅😅😂😄😄
Good guess on her age...Lynn Griffin (Pam) was born in 1952 so was 31 when this film was released.
Wouldn't working on a bottling line be more like Laverne & Shirley than I Love Lucy?...😂😅😊
This is a very realistic portrayal of life in Canada. Even now, not much has changed since the 1980s.
Mainly just the length of the beer bottle necks.
Do you have the internet over there?
In case no one has told you the word 'hoser' is as you can tell used as an insult. But how it came into being is from in Canada a typical Canadian pastime is playing outdoor hockey. To play the game however the rink has to be prepped before hand to make sure it's read as it can take hours to do. And so this is done at the end of each game to make sure it's ready for the next game. This is done by hosing down the rink to alleviate all the scratches and damage done after a game. This duty is typically done (in friendly games) by the loser of each particular match. And so the losers, would be called "hosers' This is where this insult comes from. so the boys when using the term are using it as a derogatory insult meaning loser.
I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie...Thanks
I dressed my dog as hosehead one Halloween
Steve De Jarnatt, who co-wrote this film with the lead actors, directed two feature films: Cherry 2000 (1987) and Miracle Mile (1989), both I definitely recommend checking out
🎄🎄5 golden toques... 4 pounds of backbacon, 3 french toast, 2 turtle necks - and a beer.. in a tree. 🎄🎄
Need to check out SCTV. Greatest comedy sketch show of all time. These two guys, John Candy, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, etc.
Yes, indeed, this is a loose reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet, believe it or not. Only from the minds of thise behind Second City TV!
Learned about Canada from this movie growing up, didn't really know anything about it, a favorite watching it on HBO.
Steam roller!
Find and watch the 12 days of christmas version.
It's always great when Matthew is laughing before the joke!
Know he has seen this many times 😊
WE LOVE PIPPIN!!
Awesome trivia backstory at the end. I thought I knew everythiing about this movie. I learned somethg new. Rosie in Jedi. Didn't know that.
In Emily's defense, when I first saw this as a kid, I didn't realize Mel Blanc was playing the boys' dad. I'd seen tons of Looney Tunes as a kid but wouldn't have recognized his name at the time. Today, as an adult, I heard the dad's voice as Yosemite Sam and realized immediately that it was Mel. Also, Emily's puns are a nice change from listening to my boyfriend make doughnut puns all day. Like, all day, he's been going for hours.
Me and my brother would steamroll each other after we saw this movie. Classic!
Dave Thomas is also known for playing Russell Norton in the TV series Grace Under Fire (1993-1998).
From his Wikipedia page...
Great show
@ejl423 It is unfortunate that Brett Butler self destructed with her addiction issues and that led to a premature end to the show.

There's no way I'll crash this it's a beer truck, eh!
🎵Take Off, To the Great white north🎵
SCTV was a Canadian national treasure.

Slap Shot (1977), eh
Oh HELL YEAH! Slap Shot! Rules!
It should also be mentioned that Mel Blanc voiced Yosemite Sam, which should have been the giveaway. This film really is an underappreciated classic. It seems to be somewhat overlooked, in many people's memories. Perhaps, it's because SCTV was a bit more obscure than SNL. I know for me, it came on late - after the Letterman show, which came on after the Johnny Carson Show. SCTV might be worth a look. It's basically the Canadian SNL. In fact, the "Official" (fictional) story goes that the went to NBC with a programming idea, and because they were turned down, they decided to start their own TV station. (SCTV) SCTV is a bit different than SNL, in that it isn't live. However, it's a collection of skits that represent the operation of a TV station and its diverse programming. Few of the skits were recurring, but Bob & Doug's segment was. There was also a soap opera, at one time. I think there was also a dysfunctional kid's show. In a way, it was a lot like UHF, and probably inspired it.
I'm SO glad someone is reacting to this!! Strange Brew > Wayne's World
Emily's got me wondering now if they don't have beer drinking, flying dogs down in the U.S.
As a Canadian I would’ve taken offensive if Emily had not made a looney joke. 😂😂
The Beer Store. Only in Ontario.
There are but a handful of comedies where they hit you with a big laugh IMMEDIATELY from the opening shot. It's like this with Kentucky Fried Movie, it's like this with Johnny Dangerously.
Apparently this skit on SCTV was put in because a law that was current when the show was on sad every show filmed in Canada had to have a certain percentage of "Canadian Content", whatever that was. And when Rick Morainis heard that he said, "What is Canadian content? Do they was us to sit there on the couch eating Canadian bacon and drinking beer while wearing tooks (Canadian for toboggans), and he and Dave Thomas looked at each other and said, yes, that ought to do it.
Not to be that guy or whatever, but I've always saw it spelled as Tuque not Took. Took was the last name of the character Peregrin Took from Lord of the Rings.
Thanks for the great reaction, you hosers!
Seeing them talk to Rosie about Star Wars is amusing considering he was Gold Leader in A New Hope.
There, you see that number, thats the day I was born April 4th {'67}....always loved that line since it was my Bday ✌💖☮
I'm a Michigan boy. Making fun of Canada in the 80s was literally our civic duty. No regrets. But this movie kicks total ass. It's very esoteric, but if you get it, you get it. Take off you Hoser, eh!
Great reaction! Thanks for doing this movie. As I'm born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario - it's awesome to have a movie that makes reference to my home (probably the only one!!) And yes, K-W Oktoberfest is a great beer festival (second largest behind the Munich, Germany original!) As I'm of German decent - it's been a part of my entire life!
Love this movie. Yes, it's ridiculous, but it's fun, eh!
Rick & Dave's Mackenzie brothers are a Canadian institution! (if you haven't heard their comedy album - you need to! Two particular tracks: Take Off, and their version of 12 Days Of Christmas are classics!!)
And I for one LOVED your Loonie reference Emily!! Worth the price of admission alone...only a self-realized & self-deprecating country like Canada would name a coin of currency after a beautiful bird, but with the double meaning of being crazy!!
And thank you Matthew for noting that our 'Brewers Retail' stores are now The Beer Store!
Cheers from Canada, eh! Now take off you hosers!
People didn't start looking like they were in their twenties while in their twenties until around 1992... In Canada.
This is the second movie I've seen with a flying dog.
Rosie the Hockey Player was an X-Wing fighter pilot in Star Wars A New Hope
Actually, if you listen to Mel Blancs voice in this, he's doing Yosemite Sam's voice.
My favorite reaction of yours! So many laughs and snorts! 🤣🤣🤣
You don't have to eat donuts unless you want to. If somebody shows up with donuts and you weren't planning to eat a donut, don't take one.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a baked goods freak and I love donuts, but at my age I can't eat one every time somebody offers one. Even if it's a jelly.
Canadians don't have that issue. We train to eat the dozen from before we're teething
As a first time viewer from the Great White North, happy to see this gem getting some more recognition, I'm ashamed I couldn't see where you were going with your loony bin joke!🤣👍 New subscriber!😊
Took me YEARS to figure out Dad's voice is Yosimite Sam.
I saw it in college. One of my friends and I would do the Mackenzie brothers to each other, eh.
25 years later I moved and tracked him down in the city I had moved to. I called him up and asked if he knew who it was. He said the voice was familiar. Then I told him, "Come on hoser!" and he knew right away.
They made half a dozen Cheech & Chong movies, three Pee-Wee Herman movies.......but only ONE Bob & Doug McKenzie movie which is such an injustice.
Duck tape forever, Red Green movie
I love this movie so much. It was one of those movies that I would watch constantly during summer breaks. Great reaction.
Ah, yes... Strange Brew... one of my favorite Shakespeare adaptations. Seriously. It's Shakespeare.
We read Hamlet in high school and I told my teacher about this movie and all the parallels.

I love this movie, and I'm glad to have seen you two react to it.
I also just rewatched your reaction to Bubba Ho Tep, which I'm happy to say I was able to see in a movie theater when it came out (in a fairly limited release, I believe). This reminded me of another movie that's off the beaten path that might make for a good reaction for you two -- Ghost Dog - Way of the Samurai.
