I think I'd enjoy this one. I just finished the 9th book in the Inspector Chen series by Qiu Xiaolong. It's a fascinating journey through China in the 80s and 90s. You get a front-row seat to the impact of the cultural revolution and how things have changed since then. I haven't read the newer books yet, but I'm guessing they address China's rapid transformation - especially seen in larger cities.
This reminds me of a Spanish philosopher from recent history, I remember how in interviews people would ask him ‘What are the main takeaways that you’ve gathered after so many years of reading and reflection?’ And laughing he responded in a satirically sober tone ‘Come fruta y haz ejercicio!’ (Eat fruits and exercise). Rarely have I heard someone socially purported as a ‘sage’, say something actually wise that applied to anyone, and that at the same time in being so obviously self-evident it became a perfect parody to his given status of epistemic authority.
@@materiagrix Exactly - in some dire circumstances they may be outside our control, but usually not. I’ve been thinking about you recently, hope things are going well.
@@davidnovakreadspoetry Yes, everything is very good! Thank you for thinking about me, I am slowly returning to booktube so we’ll see each other more often again :)
To eat well & to sleep well... Not sure I would have arrived at such a distillation of wisdom on my own - thanks.
@@apoetreadstowrite We live in a society that tries to divert us from essentials (meaning largely the social media scape as it touches our lives).
@@davidnovakreadspoetry: diverts & enriches, it's a pickle, I guess.
Thanks for giving us the good part.
Perhaps I shouldn’t be so dismissive of the rest. 😂

@@PageTurnersWithKatja I’d never heard of Qiu Xiaolong nor his inspector series - they look like great fun.

Ps: I definitely don’t agree that those things are not under our control though.
