David Novak Reads Poetry
Добавлен 29 авг 2020
I opened this channel because I wanted to tweet a poem about Anthony Huber killed in Kenosha. Then I decided to post readings of poems, to give my mind some other focus besides the election campaign then in full swing between Biden and Trump. After the election was settled - and after the coup attempt - I suspended posting.
About that time, I discovered “BookTube” - that region of RUclips populated by people who talk about books - in my own quest to improve my reading skills. Having been a writer, I was never much of a reader. Then, in 2022 I began to focus on reading as my primary hobby, and later to post videos in which I discuss what I’ve been reading, or other topics, both book-related and not.
In 2023 I wrote what I expect to be my last book of poetry. In spite of this channel’s birth name, poetry has moved to the sidelines, aside from the occasional reading of something that piques my fancy.

A Deep Dive into The Soul’s Refinement
That's a good stack of books. I'm beginning to think of my own goals and plans. I like some structure (set books to read) and some flexibility to allow for rabbit holes or mood reading. I also plan to read the John Dos Passos trilogy in 2025. Happy reading!
Dos Passos is like a second-tier goal for me this year - I _should_ be able to fit it in, but I don’t want to pressure myself by talking too loudly. I absolutely agree about allowing for rabbit holes and mood reading.
I'm intrigued by your focus on Traven's literature and just put a couple of his books into my TBR thanks to you... The Death Ship and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
@@Eldertalk Ooh I hope I didn’t lead you astray. 😂 I started _Treasure of the Sierra Madre_ and never finished - just because of life situations - but what I read was good. _Death Ship_ was quite intense.
Do you happen to have slovenian heritage ?
We used to say Bohemian, but - Czech.
@@davidnovakreadspoetry not slovakia but slovenian anyways i was just wondering given the surname novak which is most common surname in slovenian culture.
Beginnings for a new year, very opportune, hope is a wonderful thing.
Its one of the three main Beat generation books and probably the most accessible. Definitely worth reading at least some of it. Theres no plot so you can read half and know you've had the experience.
@@JamesRuchala Oh, kind of like Proust then. 😂
@davidnovakreadspoetry yes--Kerouac, the American Proust! Ha
That's quite the mountain perched atop that post and you defended it well against that curious intruder. I've never been a big reader of history and admire those who are. Enjoy the holiday season!
@@pleasereadyourbook Thank you, you do the same. 🎄
When you said books are not the be all and end all of life, I thought they may be the leafy greens of the mind.
Ay, they may be that. 🪴
Sounds like a good year of reading.
Keeping my fingers crossed - Happy Holidays, James.
What an amazing book stack, piled bliss, hopefully free of moisture, dust & sunlight.
They have been fine over the years - years I say 😂 - kept hidden away. Their riskiest time’s about to begin, subject to all the accidents and elements.
B Traven sounds really interesting, thanks for bringing him to my attention
@@TriumphalReads I’ve only read two novels - but hopefully pretty soon I can assess better.
I’m thinking I might also make a video about all of the books I read this year. Thanks for the update. It’ll be interesting to see you read more Chinese literature.
@@joshuacreboreads I’ll be interested to hear about all that you read, if you do. I’m not quite sure I can implement my own plans, but I’m trying to pare things down to within reason, with a tighter or even a narrower focus.
I've tried to make some plans for 2025 but I can already hear the universe laughing at me. Good luck on yours!
@@troytradup Good luck on yours, Troy. Is that the universe laughing or could it be a sleigh pulled by reindeer approaching? Ho ho ho Merry Christmas! 🎁
I enjoyed your thoughts. I'd never heard of Traven!
@@PageTurnersWithKatja His novel _The White Rose_ may have inspired the name of the ill-fated anti-Nazi group in WWII. It deals with the excesses of a petroleum company to get land, so books with social conscience of a sort but not shying away from brutality.
You know what they say about the best laid plans....haha.
@@pleasereadyourbook I’m crossing my fingers. 😅
I think I’m planning on 50 for next year. So exactly like this year but since I’m reading more dense material next year it might be difficult to crack that goal.
@@shoresofpatmos I’m pretty sure the last two years I hit 50 - I had hoped to show some improvement instead of backsliding but… 🤔 That’s why choosing the right stuff seems important. What have you got?
Ah, you are a gem, David. I've never thought about making explicit plans for a new year, but it sounds like a wonderful idea, you have some great ideas. Hope you have a terrific year end, & an exciting new year.
@@apoetreadstowrite Thank you, I hope you do too. It’s really only a thing since I became a BookTuber, I guess.
Great plans David. Merry Christmas to you and yours and happy reading to you 😊
@@RaynorReadsStuff Thank you, Debs. Merry Christmas & happy New Year - plus books books books joyous books 🎅
Correction: Government is 1/6 in the Jungle Cycle, not The Carreta as I mistakenly said.
That monumental door (or gate) behind you is astounding, what a treasure, every time I see it I fall more in love. I am really enjoying your engagements with ancient China. You have me so curious.
You said it: math is refreshing.
It’s hard to figure out, in a world of news and ‘fake news,’ how to fasten down that spot of tranquility.
What moronic comments this man offers about Huckleberry Finn, an incredibly insightful critique of slavery and ante-bellum America! The story satirizes ignorance and conveys a humanistic vision. If David Novak could write dialogue and satire as effectively as Twain wrote in Huckleberry Finn, then Novak would already be acknowledged as a great American writer. Of course Novak isn't a great writer. His talent a tiny smudge mark in comparison to the talent displayed by Clemens/Twain, who if alive would certainly hilariously lampoon this stuttering idiot.
