I am glad you are feeling better, hope getting good recovery, you can tell tired you out.
Had my fluid changed as part of my vehicle's maintenance and started getting the whining afterward. I took it back and told them I thought it was coming from low fluid or the pump not working. They didn't believe me and did a bunch of other repairs only to come full circle back to the transmission fluid level. They topped it off and I haven't heard anything since.
Happy New Year and hope you're feeling better. Great to have you back.
Thanks for all the videos you have done . Hope you are doing well .
Excellent observation on the transmission and power steering noises sounding similar! Hope you are feeling better!
I had a failure a few years ago after low atf due to leaking cooler lines. Definitely a good idea to keep an eye on those things as the cars age.
How long did you drive with low atf for the transmission to fall
@@chrisredfield3688 honestly no idea since I wasn’t checking the fluid. But keeping an eye on it would have saved me.
Am I imagining this or RnW did not post in like forever? Got me worried on you bro! Your content was and still one of the best.

This helped me out a lot!
Glad you are alright!
I hope you feel better. Thanks for the video.
Good advice for draining anything on your car. Remive the fill cap/bolt/whatever first. You'll know you can fill it up when your done and it will drain faster and more thoroughly.
Some transmissions use the same hole for drain and fill and you need special tools to service them.
welcome back 🤜🏼🤛🏽
Another thing to consider with delayed/hard shifts. I had a 1996 Nissan Maxima that started shifting from 1st to 2nd late. First it wasn't shifting until 2500 rpm, then 3500, 4500 and eventually 6000! which gave quite a jolt when it did shift! This was a gradual thing over 6 months. The fluid was good so I just assumed this old car was on its way out. Then one day it wouldn't shift at all so I thought well that's it. But a few hours later I started the car and the check engine light was on and the Overdrive light was flashing. I got codes from both the ECU and the transmission computer: bad throttle position sensor. A $70 part later and my transmission was shifting like it was brand new and lasted for years without issue. Unbelievable.
I was wondering if the tps sensor would throw off my transmission. Its as if my torque converter isn't locking up, rpm is free to jump up and down with the flick of the pedal which isn't right and the overdrive won't freaking engage... Slowly buy surely it stopped shifting into overdrive.. Freaking annoying as freaaaakk I miss my damn manual trans.
Some cars also use the MAF sensor to determine shifts by looking at how much air volume is going into the engine. The TCM computer looks at that as well as the TPS to determine a soft shift.
Dang, I brought my car up to Advanced Auto and it read 4 different codes. My vehicle started doing what yours did. It's been over a month. 1 code was for a sensor. My ex added fluid, but now there's a whining sound.
Thanks, very helpful comprehensive advice
One bit I'd add for a delayed or hard shift. The internal problem could be the check balls in the valve body are worn and get partially stuck in their respective holes. This delays the shift mechanically, until the flow or pressure overcomes the stuck ball, moving it and completing the gear change.
This is not a problem on female transmissions.
What's the fix for this then
@@alwayslearning0586 in the example of a shrunken ball in the valve body? You'd need to remove the valve body, open it up, and replace the balls. There's a guy that gives a great example of this on a 6L80.
@@alwayslearning0586 this is the guy but it would take a while to find the comparison as he has multiple 6L80 videos but I don't recall which one he does a side by side check ball comparison. He does mention it around the 40:19 mark.

Glad your back bro
Honestly I would have gotten out of bed 2 hours earlier if I knew RnW was posting today! LoL
Welcome back. Be well.
Glad to see you back, hope you are feeling well. We have a ford escape 4wd with no codes that slips back and forth out of overdrive if we let up on the gas pedal even slightly, drives me crazy.fluid level is full and doesn't smell burnt.where do you suggest I start looking for the issue?any and all help much appreciated. Wishing you and yours the best in 2022!
Sounds like a sensor or valve issue
Good info. I recently swapped my transmission out for a used one, because it was falling into neutral instead of shifting to next gear. Swapped it out with a good one, and it still does it. Im lost. Only happens when at very very lil throttle. If i floor it, its fine. Very irritating.
What u ended up doing.
Also transmission fluid is both for heat management and lubrication. Change your atf! And use quality stuff. If you have a Toyota/Lexus use ONLY oem atf. I've changed atf on my old 03 Camry and man the night and day difference in shifting made it feel like a new car lol.
That's a placebo effect.🖒
@@FredTheLutinoCocatiel nope. I've driven that car for years and the moment I changed out the ATF it shifted smoother and performed better. I do maintenance on my own car.
I always get better gas mileage for about 3’weeks. I usually save about $7 a week in fuel at $2.50 a gallon in my 6th generation Camry.
How many miles did you do it at?
Mine has 132k miles lexus es350 07 idk if its too late to change it?
@@eddieg9060 When I bought my Lexus it had 130k. And I changed the atf as soon as I could. Which was around 135k.
Check the quality of the oil. Your radiator has an in and outlet line to the transmission on the lower left. Just get a white paper towel and pull out the line quickly and put it back.
Red - You're good
Darkish red - Maybe change it soon within the year or so
Black - Don't change lol
Black with metal specs - don't change
I have an '07 SUV that I bought in 2013. I did a "power flush and fill" (PS - don't do this) shortly after I bought it, and I waited 5 years before I replaced it. I had no issues with transmission or shifting in that time, I just want to point out...I just reached the 5 year mark and knew it was time to look at it again. Starting then, I just do a manual drain and fill myself. Costs me less than $100 a year to do, and yes, I do it annually now (the first two years after I did every 6 months). Bought my ride at around 187K, and she is almost at 460K now and still running like a champ. I did the shop "power flush and fill" only the one time and won't do it again because I have heard some horrible stories about the process causing more issues than it hopes to resolve. I digress.
The procedure I use now is simple:
- Wait until the engine is at ambient temp (usually I park it overnight and do this the next day)
- Pull the dipstick out to allow flow
- Remove the drain plug and allow it to bleed out into a pan, checking the color of the fluid or looking for particles/objects
- Allow it to bleed til a slow drip
- Replace the plug after wiping and checking for debris (I add a squeezable sealant to the threads only)
- Using an old oil container for discarded fluid, see how much fluid came out (roughly) and replace that amount plus one "gulp"
- Start the vehicle and allow each gear to be engaged for 30 seconds down the tree then back up the tree
- Check level (this is a do or don't if you have no issues prior)
- Take it for a slow ride at start/stop conditions in town then on to the highway for all gears
The reason I wait til it reaches ambient temps is because the fluid I will be using to replace is at ambient, and if I drain when hot, the amount will be off radically. Always drain when it's at ambient temp. I must be doing something right because she still runs like a champ, as I have mentioned. When I do my annual bleed, the fluid that comes out is still very red in color. Not new red, but still very see through and not at all discolored. The key to a happy vehicle is routine maintenance. I'm gonna love watching her roll over to 500K and beyond. In this day and age that is almost unheard of. Spend $100 now or spend thousands later. Pretty simple economics.
Thanks for the step by step process.
Yeap, thanks for taking the time to help other with your good results and recommendations.
460K miles is impressive!🤯👏
@@ntwalipat2 Thanks! The ODO is now almost 510K KM on it. Still running. I even managed to pull over when she rolled over at 500K so I could snap a pic.
@@ntwalipat2 its km not mile still very impressive.
Glad ya back we missed ya bro!!!💪🔥
We missed you!
Well done thanks
Yes, a question for you for your NEXT video: What do you think will happen to automotive technicians with E.V.s flooding the market?
Good question, thanks. Will do a video on it.
You are a very good service to the people unlike 80 percent of machianics who are SCAMMERS ...
Good one, I kind of missed emphasizing on regularly servicing your AT. A surprising amount of people believe it doesn't need maintenance. A good tranny oil service every 50000 miles or every 5 years will prevent all of those problems and dramatically extend your AT's life.
Change ATF every 5 years even though its less than 50k miles? (Provided it still looks red)
@@SocialPerspective101 the 5 years service maybe conservative but even without the milage ATF fluid has additives that brake down with age and foreign particles e. g. Dust and moisture built up over time. The transmission is not a hermitacally sealed system, it has a ventilation valve to compansate for fluids expanding under heat. So If 5 years seems to soon to you I would still at least recommend a service every 7-8 years.
@@nobenznofun9139 Thanks !
Depends on the vehicle. My Honda Odyssey will only drain 1/3rd out during a change so it's supposed to be drained and filled with every other oil change or 15k miles. When I first realized this after having some shift issues on a 2012 I bought in 2017, I changed it 3 times in a row with some drive in between to get it mostly changed over. It was fine after that.
In my limited experience, Japanese cars with CVTs can have very specific and non-obvious procedures for checking the transmission fluid level - for example, an older Nissan/Jatco unit which you're supposed to check with the engine running, or a Honda CVT which you have to check 60-90 seconds after turning the engine off. I can see why newer transmissions go with the overflow type fill ports - they're pretty foolproof.
Checking at a certain temperature is with all transmissions though…
One of the things that’s not said to the average DIY’er that can cause overfilling easily.
As transmission fluid heats up, it expands.
Sure the average person could save money doing it themselves but doing it correctly is more important
Thanks a lot for all the information brother ..that's why I decided to subscribe to your channel long time ago...first things first...why to take your car to a transmission shop....people should check transmission fluid level first ....if is low refilling won't hurt and can save you thousands of dollars
Hey hey hey
Good to see you
I thought my power steering pump was on its way out on a 2000 Toyota Camry because of the traditional whining sound. Changed the lines, reservoir and pump only to find out it was the bearings in the alternator! A cheap stethoscope helped me diagnose problem.
Good to see you’re well.
A simple yet tough procedure.
Checking ATF levels.
My old school early 70s novas and 83 monte was easy.
Newer stuff is little more finicky.
My Silverado has to give in read the manual. Still tough one with deep pan.
It can also be a problem with the shifter. I bought a w210 with their "sealed tranny", and open shifter gap, where I repaired it by removing a aaa battery that had wormed it's way into the shifter at some point.
Good video. I have an 08 gmc that I don’t drive often. A few weeks ago I noticed that it was taking a second to go into reverse… I also noticed it had a slight wining sound. Today started it right up and put it in reverse and nothing. Put it on drive and it barely crept forward. Checked the fluid and couldn’t see anything. Grabbed some from the auto store and tomorrow will add it in. Hopefully it works
Did that work for u? I have same thing on equinox
@@Bone89 yeah so it was low on fluid. Filled it up and it drove great. However it turned out to be a transmission gasket on the pan. Had to drop it and put and pan and gasket up. If it’s low, it’s low for a reason. The difference is, how fast is it leaking? I had a jeep that leaked very slow. A quart a year kept it good but my truck was leaking way too much haha
@@spfadden082711 i checked the level after my comment. I’ll get diagnostic and pray. The guy that checked the level said the fluid was pretty nasty.
My transmission in my old 94 Maxima failed many times. Luckily the engines last almost indefinitely. All it did before the first failure was shutter slightly when shifting into overdrive. I had no idea that was a symptom of impending doom.
Usually, it's the little sensors and filters that mimics bigger issues. :(
Sometimes my cars 1-2 shift is rough off the start if you push the gas pedal hard. Cars 20 years old might be time to take a day replace the shift solenoids
Thank you.
Enjoyed your video once again and I'm glad you're back to healthy again. I have a question for you, we have a 2006 Lexus RX330. And the adapted lights light came on the dash and the lights sometimes work and sometimes don't and sometimes the light goes out and the light works the headlights that is. What would be causing this problem?
Thank you Good Sir.
excellent video
1:51 we had a Nissan like that one time, had a CEL and the code said it was transmission solenoid A, a bunch of forums said it could be from dirty or low trans fluid. I looked underneath and the transpan was soaked and when i drained it only about 12 ounces came out. Changed the fluid, filter and gasket. Went from barely shifting from 1st into 2nd gear, to shifting buttery smooth. Did the fluid change and no CEL after the first drive of like five feet
How long did you drive it like that? Or did you fix it right away? My car started showing signs of transmission issues over a month ago. The RPMs would rev up. Once I'm over 30 MPH, it wouldn't jerk or rev up. My ex checked the fluid and said it was low. I do not have a dipstick, so he stuck his pinky in the port to check it. I added transmission stop leak. Because when I was parked in the parking lot, there was brown fluid underneath my vehicle. It seemed to run better a week after, but only a few times of driving it. I brought it to an auto shop and they put a quart of transmission fluid in it for me. I don't think the kid that did that for me checked it himself. My ex checked it the next day and he said it was dry. He added two quarts. Well, now it's making a very loud whining sound. I have checked after driving it to see if there's fluid under my vehicle. And there isn't. So it seems like the leak stopped. But now it's making a loud whining sound. So frustrating 😢
@@Loyal_beauty87 couple days at most then did the thing

most likely its because after you take the booster you'll think you're invincible so you take more risk but when you didn't you will take more caution
I have a question regarding my 2001 Honda Accord 2.3 4cyl FWD. It has 206k miles with it and I bought it when it had 160k miles. I recently changed the engine oil. But before doing that, I decided to change the transmission fluid at the same time, since I forgot to ask the previous owner if the transmission had gone a transmission service. I lifted the front tires only cause I only needed a small space underneath to a put my oil drain container. And when I finished replacing the oil, I put the car down and started the engine. When it started, the D4 was blinking and engine light came off at the same time. There were 6 codes which are about transmission related and non transmission related as well. I looked it up and i read that it’s a transmission problem. People have said that once I replaced the transmission, all those codes would go away. I was really surprised what happened. But I am still hoping to find out another way instead of replacing the transmission. Since the cost would be more than the car’s worth. If you have any idea at all, you’ll be my Santa Claus this coming Holiday!!.lol

Hi dear R&W, I often watch your videos for different kind of repairs of my own car. you are always a great help. Thanks.
I would like to ask something about a recent trouble in my car. I had to change the rear seal of the engine of my sonata 2016 2.0cc, I took it to a workshop because obviously i didn't have the tools to change it. the mechanic removed axels and lowered the gearbox after lifting up the car. I thought its a good time to change/fix the axel boots. I got them changed. now when the mechanic had put everything back together, there was a sound under the hood as the axel bearing is bad. but the car also started jerking in the reverse and drive gear. I took it back to the mechanic, he said its the axel, I changed the axel again. it didn't change anything. there is still the same sound and the same gear jerks. the mechanic was unable to tell what was the issue. he said he was only responsible to stop the leak, which is done. Now he cant do anything. I watched videos to get help from different channels, some say its an ECM issue, some say its a low fluid issue, some say the connector of the solenoid switch is bad, i have tried to check the connections, they seem OK. the mechanic didn't tell me if the oil was drained or not.. Can you please suggest me the steps to start narrowing down the cause the of the problem? Thanks.
Hey i have this problem on my jeep wj 2000 where every time i make a left turn my engine revs but doesnt move. After a second or two it does advance but it makes a hard gear change . Like hard lever being pulled underneath the truck. I have my oil on the right level. I even removed a quart to add some lucas. I also did end up adding more then i was supposed to because i did have a leak. My fluid level was a little over the “o” limit by maybe half a quart. That actually fixed my left turn problem but i noticed my transmission feeling “heavy” then i decided to take out the excess fluid and im back to square one. Now when my truck hasnt been warmth up 100% and i barely drive it about a 1/4 mile , when i come to a stop i accelerate and my truck doesnt move. I have to put my truck in park then back to drive until i hear the gear changing from underneath. Sorry for the long paragraph I just thought every detail was important
Thank you
Thanks Eric the car guy !
Glad you are doing better and beat the covid.
Thanks for the videos. Just wanted to say Hi and also mention that I bought my LS460 for around $8K about 3 years ago after I saw your video about top 5 Luxury cars under $10K. It currently has more than 190K miles on it and still going strong. Do you have a shop in CA? Just wanted to say Hi in person lol
Those are great cars, they not only last long but comfortable to drive as well. Unfortunately I don't have a shop, will be building a garage at the house soon though hopefully.
Glad you're better! Would love to know why my 06 Honda Civic has started lighting the driver air bag light everytime I hit a rough bump on the highway (like a joint on the road) and stays on until it cycles- then a few days later, same bump and comes on again.....
It might be the connections under your seat. My Avenger does that
Try bumping your dash close to the eye with your hand It it goes out you might have a lose connection. In the eye. Do it in park while vehicle is runing. It worked for me
Not saying it’s your problem but it wort a try
I had 05 civic that srs airbag light would go on .it was seatbelt sensor in the buckles. Im not sure if this applies go 2006
Thanks so much for all the ideas I will try it.... Also my electronic fuel gage inverts itself and then reverts back alot, so maybe something in the dash near the eye IS loose......
My Honda Accord was vibrating during initial acceleration , every time it would vibrate and then it would go away after 30mph. My ATF was a little low so I went and changed my ATF along with my transmission filter, guess what the vibration went away.
My 2007 Honda CRV was making a whistling sound after driving it. Checked my fluids and my ATF fluid was low. Drove it yesterday and the sound was there but slightly lower. Drove it today and didn’t notice any whistling sound. Does it take a while of driving before it goes away completely? Also it whistled while i revved the engine in park with steering wheel straight, but didn’t whistle today.Thank you for your time.
I had the mysterious burning smell from my Nissan Xterra. Living in upstate NY the snow / salt combo had done a number on many under carriage components one of which was the metal cooling lines which rusted. No fluid was ever noted as the truck was always parked on a rock driveway. When the truck would not shift into gear, the low transmission fluid was discovered.
Did adding fluid fix the problem?
@@MrIlovebmw86 Once I replaced the rusted metal transmission lines that leaked and added the correct ATF, all was good.

Did you get the booster and still got Covid? Glad you're better, thanks for the vids man
according to the news. vaccines wont prevent you from getting covid or from spreading it. they claim that it reduces death and extreme symptoms. but im starting to doubt that they are capable of not lying.
Booster gives you a better outcome when you recieve covid. Vaccine tells your body what to do with this new virus, for many people thier body's go into overdrive that creates many issues.

Ratchet man, do you know Mercedes? Recently acquired 2004 C class with the old 5 speed auto (apparently bulletproof?)
When cold it delays shifts and slams into gears, but only sometimes. Sometimes (also when cold) it slams from 3rd to 4th gear when driving at constant speed like it cant decide what it wants so i throw it in manual mode. My intuition says its a electric issue since its pretty much flawless most of the time. One more thing is i notice the tachometer needle fluctuating at constant speeds, but some sources say its meant to be that way. Didnt scan it yet since i dont have stars diagnostic.
Amazing content hey do I got my transmission fluid changed due to displacement sensor went bad car sounded like the power steering noise only when we would push it hard went back to shop he added another litter totally went away my question is is my transmission ok or it was the low oil issue I also noticed he put 8 liters and it needed 9 🤦🏻♂️ he added all nine
My mechanic changed my sealed transmission in Jan. In June , I noticed smoke under hood and brought car to his ship. He stated transmission was shooting out of the vent or breather and said he ran car for 30 minutes , the problem never came back again. I think maybe he didn't change my fuild correctly back in Jan.

I haven't run into one yet, but I've heard some cars don't even have a dipstick for the oil anymore. All I can say to that is WTF!? They may have sensors for it, but F that having another sensor that may go out, gives false reading, and is in a spot that's a pain to get to and replace

What if u changed both axles on a altima and some cv fluid came out would it loose alot of fluid ?
I have always delayed and dreaded changing my ATF fluid and filter due to no drain plug. In the 50 years I've worked on my cars and trucks I have never seen a drain plug.
Dropping the pan is such a mess especially laying on my back on the ground. How much do they save per car to not have one? A dollar or two? I'd pay if it was a option even.
I think the omission of drain plugs and dipsticks on modern transmissions is to avoid the owners inadvertently draining/checking/filling the wrong thing!
Get a Honda. Drain plug provided at no extra charge.

First thanks for the videos u help a lot now question I have 07 gmc sierra with 240000transmission lost reverse the other day still have all the shift only problem is reverse I did lost oil when I change the rear main seal about 10k miles ago but top it off n it work fine that’s the last job I did on it where I lost fluid now last trans filter was change 89k ago do u think dirty filter can cause this ?
I have a 2004 Ford expedition with a 5.4 motor in it with 4x4 options. It will shift into reverse but not into drive. Leading up to that current issue, when I put it in drive there would be a delay before it kicked.. I am currently changing the screen and putting new fluid in it. The fluid that was in it was in it is a brownish color. Any advice
I know this video came out a year ago. Quick question what advice can you give if a dealership refuses to check the transmission fluid because it’s a “sealed” transmission. I had a Ford Focus 2016 got in 2017 with 48,000 miles on it had up until this year with 120,000 miles where the transmission went out. The car rarely needed any repairs, it was a pretty decent car until the transmission went out. Once I hit 68,000 miles I asked the dealership if they can check or change the transmission fluid they told that they won’t be able to do so because it’s a sealed transmission and that it hasn’t it 100,000 miles yet. Okay so I waited until maybe 90,000 miles maybe 95,000 miles asked the dealerships again about the transmission fluid but still came up with same excuse that they won’t be able to touch the transmission since it’s sealed. So with the the newer vehicles are we doomed to let the transmissions go and get a new one to replace ?
I don't have an automatic. I still watch RnW's video.
😂😂😂
Make sure you locate the right fill hole
my ford escape doesn't seem to have symptoms but overdrive light begins to blink after driving for a bit? What could be the cause?? I can only think that maybe the shift are a bit slow.
I have a Mercedes C300 2008 and it was running great on 183k miles all of the sudden when I got in the car and put in "Drive from Park" it jerked really bad and then when I took it on drive it didnt shift any gears, any thoughts?
