Hey Tim just found your channel after bing watching a bunch of bike videos on RUclips. I'm in my late 40s and have recenlty rekindled my passion for bikes. I'm currently trying to build up my strength and endurance. This video is very inspiring! Hope to see more like this in the future. 🙌
Spontaneous tours are always the best! I love riding rail trails, too. It´s the perfect elevation profile for riding a fixed gear. I am more than a little envious, though: over here in Germany you´d be lucky to find 25km (15 miles) of continuous trails like that. Most rail trails are just short segments.
Loved to hear you quote the "15 Miles On The Erie Canal" song.... Low bridge, everybody down Low bridge, yeah we're coming to a town And you'll always know your neighbor And you'll always know your pal If ya ever navigated on the Erie Canal
Just binge watched your ride from DC to Pittsburg, then this. I’m in Cincy area just across the river in KY. It’s funny watching another rider mentally process the trails I ride often. I was rooting for you to ignore the detour sign, while you were having a beer at Cartridge. On weekends no workers are there. Great videos. As to the question, new trails or old trails. I subscribe to the philosophy that nothing is ever the same if you pay close attention. Every minute is a minute we have yet to live and we should be open to what it brings. I was on the trail yesterday and saw a bald eagle by the Clear Creek soccer fields. That was a definite first. I caught it out of the corner of my eye and thought that was a huge vulture as it landed. I was rewarded for stopping to look closer.
I feel the same when I see people making videos about Ohio to Erie up here on the paths I ride almost daily. I agree too - the same trail is always different, depending on who you are with, the weather, the season and even your mood. Cheers!
Riding new trails and discovering new places is always fun. But, I don’t care where it is when you know you get to ride somewhere new everyday on a week long trip. Looked like a great day.
Pure Gold from an Entertainment perspective. From a viewer perspective, I prefer the new routes. If I was a local or part of the trips...I would prefer the memories for sure.
A road closed or detour sign is almost always an invitation for me to ignore it and go past it to see if I can get through. 60% of the time, it works every time.
It's always interesting to see what people think of the hometown. The new bridge over the Little Miami River at Beechmont Levi is about a year old. I didn't realize the OTET signage around Lunken airport and the new bridge was inadequate . Probably because I ride it so often I don't pay attention. The Grandin Road/Cartridge Factory construction is going on two years. But as you note, if you go through on weekends or lunchtime, no one is working. Maybe it'll be done this year. The official detour seems to have been designed by someone who hates cyclists. The route is on busy, fast roads without a shoulder. There are nicer alternatives; consult Strava or Ride With GPS heat maps. The Little Miami Scenic Trail is currently closed thru May, 2024 at Loveland to replace a bridge over O'Bannon Creek. There's no official detour but you can go a few blocks to route OH 48 and back to the trail on Cones Rd. I'm impressed you made it as far as Xenia! There are at least four breweries between downtown and Loveland 🙂
I hear you on the signage - since the Ohio to Erie also comes through my town I try to look at it asa tourist. We don't have any OTET signs - they expect you to know the Towpath is the route. Of course it is easy for me - but always point confused looking bike packers in the right direction if I see them. We made a pretty good detour the last time we did the OTET three years ago - it was climby but that doesn't really bother us - hills over busy, commercial roads any day. You surprised I rode that far because of the miles or because I resisted the 3 other beer stops?!🤣
love to explore new places but it is nice to see how things change or stay the same on prior trails. love your channel. did the Gap and C&O in September. its been on my bucket list for a while.
Great decision, ride through👍Thanks for sharing these trails, I like to see the 'old' infrastructure and buildings repurposed. Can't beat relaxing car free miles.
I haven't - I've heard it is supposed to be kind of tough climbing-wise. I always mean to look into it but forget. I'd bet I've ridden some of the roads.
Those front “hook” can be surprisingly useful for riding on some upright bars if they’re wrapped. I don’t like the look of wrapping that part of the bars, though.
Yeah - I just choose to raw dog them when I ride there. I’m not married to aesthetics- but I can bring myself to wrap them. Glove season now anyways I guess!
Nice. I was down in Cincinnati this summer (where I was born) and saw this trail and was wondering about it. Great town and good food. Thanks for this. -H
I really dig Cinci. I've been able to spend a decent amount of time there over the last number of years. Now that the trail is connected it is so awesome!
And the video by the numbers 27 minutes and 57 seconds viewing time, 1 very interesting question, and 100% inspiring. Great video Tim. I get bored very easy (AADD) so i prefer new trails.
Thanks so much! I guess I like ridding my bike so much that I end up riding a lot of the same trails - but it is always awesome to get away - I'm exploring in New York right now. Cheers!
Ugh, bad memories of having my back wheel wedge into one of those light rail tracks while cycling through Cincy. Yeah, I'm extra careful around those now. I love their waterfront trail and really want to do the OTET though. Love riding both new places and old.
I remember seeing the signs warning about that the first time I went to Cinci - I've always been extra careful! A mix of new and old for me too. Out on a new adventure in New York right now! Cheers!
My favorite part of the Little Miami Trail is Loveland to Corwin. And, that detour sucks. Rode it earlier this year southbound and the climbs are fairly steep. You were lucky to get around it. And I prefer new adventures vs repeats. Also, Devil Wind is great.
When we made a good route around three years ago it did have some climbs - but that doesn't really bother us(my next vid has me doing 8000 feet!!!) Definitely glad I got around it though because I didn't want to backtrack to the better detour so would have had to go out on the busy, commercial roads. I think I will always be a mix on new vs. old. But out in New York doing amazing new rides right now so.... Cheers!
Love this video where you decide to wing it and see how far you get. to answer your question, I'd rather ride new trails. This year I rode Erie Canal and Northern Trail (NH).
Thanks! I'm a mix on new vs. old - that being said I'm in NY right now riding amazing new trails. Love the parts of the Erie Canal we've ridden - I'm in a town on the north/south Empire Trail right now.
Thanks! Its interesting we have all these flat towpaths and rail trails - but in a lot of the state once you leave them it can get real climby - mostly rollers but it can add up fast!
This video is so good! I like in NKY and commute across the roebling bridge every day + take the ohio to erie trail up to loveland all the time. It's weirdly fun to watch someone wayfind on trails that I'm super familiar with.
Thanks! Being that I ride the Towpath up here I get the same thing with others videos when they are near me. It all seems so simple when you ride it all the time!
Thanks! I guess the length always just depends on what I'm trying to show or what the ride was like... Ohio does have great bike trails - but many of our cities struggle when it come to modern bike infrastructure. Cheers!
NEW. Great job Tim, your video's keep improving and inspiring me to get on the bike and ride. If that wasn't spontaneous you did a darn good job making me think it was, so keep up the great work. Looking ahead to the next one.
I enjoyed watching. Your days on the bike are much like mine. I’ll have to make a point of crossing the border 🇺🇸 and trying some of your rail trails. If you want to try something on the 🇨🇦 side, our Niagara Circle Route 147km is a good one as well as the Cannonball 300. Enjoy your day my friends.
Thanks! I haven't ridden in Canada - had a trip planned to Montreal and then - Covid. Haven't had the chance to plan something there since. I have a friend who just did the route around Lake Erie.
The Niagara Circle Route takes you along the Niagara River, past Niagara Falls, through historic Niagara on the Lake, past dozens of wineries, a few brew pubs, along the entire Welland Canal, and quaint villages along Lake Erie. 80% dedicated paved bike trail, 20% lightly travelled roads with paved bike lane.
That detour is a bite in the butt, there is no good way. And it is taking forever. You can get through on weekends or whenever they are not working but otherwise I think not. I’d say you were pretty lucky. Been wanting to do the Ohio - Erie Trail for a few years now. Have to make it happen! BTW a lot of awesome country/farm roads out of Xenia. I often ride them and connect with the trails. Thanks for visiting.
The way we did the detour a few years ago wasn't too bad as long as you don't mind hills... I wasn't prepared to find it on this day though. You should try to swing Ohio to Erie - interesting way to see so much of the state! Would love to ride more around Xenia eventually - cheers!
Yeah - this bike handled great with two on our summer trips. Wasn’t awful for this kind of ride - but could get old if you do want to get your hands off the bars in other situations.
Well that was 27.56 minutes well spent. Living in a mountain foothill community, I can't bike two miles out & back from my house without getting at least 500 feet elevation gain and average 1.5k per ride, which is great because it's built up my climbing ability. But for the past year, I've been considering picking up a decent ebike to commute around town.
I'm sure I will have a ebike at some point in my life. Spending the week in the Hudson Valley now so we've been climbing like crazy. Did a 2.5 mile climb averaging 6.8% today! Cheers!

I'm out traveling and have a lot more on the way!
I’d love to see you all do the Ohio to Erie again, I find your stories fascinating. If you all do venture out again, the Katy Trail would be cool.
Katy Trail is on my list. After last years really tough bike-packing trip the crew may be down for a simpler route - we will see...

The Dustin Klein bits made me laugh...thanks Tim :)
