Tbh, while the music is really good, I believe this is more due to how short the loops are, and the signature cuttoff at the end that Toby does

    • @nyseetem
      @nyseetem 2 месяца назад +18

He single handedly launched the current golden era of indie games... WITH A SINGLE GAME. It's no wonder this guy is inspiring, and before UT nobody thought about it that much, despite his talent being obvious even back then. When he helped his friend Andrew Hussie (another famous creator, this time of a famous and influential webcomic called "Homestuck" (they happens to be friends since forever)) for the OST of his webcomic, it became obvious that Toby had it. And yet, nobody thought it would ever go to the point of turning the table of the war between AAA and indies. Thanks to him, the indie scene is way bigger than the AAA one by almost 60% (estimated by the industry itself).

I can't wait for BIGSHOT to eventually come around, it's basically like 5 Toby Fox songs in a trench coat, mugging you in an alley way. It's great
Also, to explain DELTARUNE, I think it's best described by Toby as "A game for people who completed UNDERTALE." Anything beyond that would be speculation since the game still has at least 5 chapters left before it's finished.

  • @softsounds8453
    @softsounds8453 2 месяца назад +45

To answer your question, Rude Buster is the main battle theme of Deltarune. It gets the name from the first character who attacks you in the game because their attack's name was 'rude buster' :) The song sticks around throughout the game despite the title saying 'Chapter 1'.
The World Revolving is the theme of Chapter 1's secret boss. The fight takes place in a spinning carousel-platform-room hence the song's name and how some parts of the song feel like they're moving in a circle from one headphone to the next. There's lots of clown/jester themes from that boss so the song has that carnival feel to it. I believe this song also houses a lot of important leitmotifs that show up again in different songs. There's a reason for that but that's a bit too spoilery ;)

If I were to throw my hat in the ring on explaining 'what is Deltarune to Undertale' I'd say that more than anything it's a thematic follow-up. It takes concepts and avenues of thought explored in Undertale and explores the opposite ends of certain spectrums UT touched on while merely examining different aspects with others. Interestingly, Toby had the idea for Deltarune first, but felt it was too large and complex an idea for him to execute. It was only after Undertale's success and a while to breathe that he decided he wanted to try and realize it. So some of the ideas are ones that have been on the shelf since even before he wrote Undertale.

So regarding the Chapter 1 thing, Deltarune is being released in Chapters (and is being worked on as we speak). So far we got Chapters 1 and 2, while 3 and 4 are very close to completion and might be released in the holidays if all goes smoothly, and more will follow suit. Chapter 1 was released on Haloween 2018, while Chapter 2 has its 3 year anniversary in 2 days. Midway through developing Chapter 2, Toby realized he needed a team for Deltarune to not take forever to develop, and we can expect the rest of the Chapters to have far smoother development, which is pretty nice.
Rude Buster is named after a special attack one of the main characters has, and requires a lot of points to use (not really MP, but that's a long story). Why Toby chose that to be the name of the regular battle theme, no idea. THE WORLD REVOLVING, on the other hand, is much closer to your idea of "oh it's a lot more abstract", even if its meaning makes a lot of sense in context. Both tracks are gonna be heard a lot when you play the game, though for very different reasons lol.

Toby Fox is the only games musician I know who refuses to loop their audio in the OST for their games and also cuts it off abruptly, despite all of the music being designed to loop. I can't help but wonder if this comes from the perspective of "I want you to hear this in-game only" or not...

I mean, if you wanted to loop it for yourself, it'd be better if there isn't a fadeout or something... He could make it at least two loops though... Maybe he just wasn't looking to take on more work than he had to do, so the music is just a straight version of the files in the game? I don't know... I doubt he'd release the soundtrack at all if he didn't want people listening outside of the game, but people have done weirder stuff, so maybe....I don't know...

Toby Fox’s music is pure bangers imo, right up there with Soken. I found him via Homestuck, a web series that is really only best experienced anymore with the custom browser for it given the death of Flash (it has some flash movies and games as part of it - Homestuck is famously difficult to categorize lol). It’s a bit of a joke in the fandom that Undertale’s runaway success helped fund the Homestuck based game Hiveswap after the Kickstarter money got stolen from the original dev company.
Speaking of Hiveswap, I should see if you’ve done any from that game and then arrange to have that corrected if you haven’t done my faves from that. :3c (would recommend Homestuck music bc much of that are bangers, but it’s not an outright game so idk if that’s something you’d react to.)

Rude Buster is the regular battle theme, The World Revolving is Chapter 1's secret boss' theme :D
Deltarune is a """"sequel""" "to Undertale, questionable because it's in the same universe but also not. Involving the same characters but also not, it's weird. All you really gotta know is that it should be played after Undertale. The game is in looooong dev time, Chapter 1 came out in 2018, Chapter 2 in 2021, both were free. Chapters 3-5 are currently being developed, and the complete package will eventually come out (not free), but that's still way out.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE The World Revolving SO MUCH, I think it might be my favorite song on the whole Deltarune OST so far: it plays during a brutally tough, energetic, nonstop battle against a chaotic little jester devil, against a backdrop of a bizarre, low-poly carousel that seems to float in space, and the whole fight is peppered with the boss's ramblings about freedom and chaos and how he's free to do anything he wants (even though when you meet him, he's _locked_ inside his arena; he acts like _he's free_ and _invites you in_ because all of _you_ are _trapped),_ and the song just perfectly encapsulates that to me, the way the melodies breathlessly fly into each other and never slow down or take a break, the way the different instruments parts can seamlessly blend together into one unbroken "melody line" while the chaotic carnival beat ceaselessly pounds away in the background-- it's like the musical equivalent of spinning around until you collapse in the middle of a whipping, violent snowstorm

    …Wow.
That… sums up Undertale. What you said about art is a direct reflection of the Undertale experience.
There’s no way for you to realize the significance of what you just said… but it was a mouthful. You stumbled into articulating what exactly is so special about the game and why it connects to people, without even trying on your part. Seriously, I don’t think I can stress enough just how big what you said was. I cannot express in this comment how much your words truly resonated with my and many others personal experiences with the game. And how much it resonated with the vision Toby Fox wanted to share regarding Undertale as an artistic piece.
Man… I don’t know when you’re thinking of playing this game… but whenever it happens, I think you’re in for something really, really special… and just like all of us that played it, there is no way to know or be prepared for just how much of a cord this game will strike with you.

The thing with Rude Buster, for me, is the way I heard it the first time, on launch night.
Toby's account on Twitter surprise dropped the game while RPing as a character that until then only existed in the diehard fans' lore conspiracy circles. The game was titled SURVEY_PROGRAM, put up some unsettling warning shit on your screen, and generally immersed you in a fog of "WTF is happening" as all the most out-there fanwank shit about Undertale was suddenly brought into the realm of true possibility.
The game then proceeds to just endlessly fuck with your expectations concerning an Undertale sequel. Stuff doesn't add up, characters don't behave as you'd expect, tropes from the first game are subverted, and you're constantly immersed in this unease and sense that anything could happen. The game looks like Undertale, the character portraits and text are black and white like Undertale, the graphics are simple like Undertale. But everything it's saying to you is wrong.
Then, you get into a fight, and everything explodes into color and animation on a level we hadn't seen before, as Rude Buster blasts you in the face. It just hit so hard.

One of the impressive things about these games is the way it reuses motifs from songs in order to build up your expectations when they're used again later. There's a motif in World Revolving that crops up again in a later chapter, and based on the context, I suspect it will keep appearing in subsequent chapters, perhaps to appear as a song all its own eventually.

thanks for finallly reviewing this, I would put Deltarune/undertale on the same level of GGST music. at least, in it's own genre of chiptune. I think Toby Fox and Daisuke have similairly amazing mastery of their genre. But what i'd like to see both of them do is branch out to see what they could do. because, NAOKI already does a couple extras here and there, he's not chained to Guilty Gear, but I'm REALLY hoping Daisuke takes a new route with the new Guest character Lucy from Cyberpunk Edgerunners. I've heard him use really good synths in songs before like "The Gravity"s bass solo. As for Toby Fox, i want him to try dabbling in something that is a lot more brassy. like a chiptune drumset under a Big-band, high quality uncompressed sounding horn section. I'd like to see him mesh the Chiptune quality with the crisp quality of today, and see what he can do with it. Both of the artists are already at the top of my lists on some of my favorite artists, but I'd love to see what they can do outside of their forte.

Undertale and Deltarune in the same day?! Happy Anniversary indeed 🥳 Since you already heard to "Field of hopes and dreams" you can hear a same leitmotif that also has in "The World Revolving" and many others which is the "Don't Forget" melody.

Heads up: the oft-mentioned BIG SHOT is actually a sorta "part 2" of another song called NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A, so you'd probably want to do them together if one is requested

Undertale/Deltarune's official soundtracks tend to just end right when the next loop should begin, which is unfortunate for songs that include an intro part that only plays once, but works out quite well for songs like Rude Buster, where the whole song is part of the loop, so you could theoretically just listen to it on loop forever.

I found out a while back that you can set a youtube video to loop if you right click the screen. For some videos of videogame music, this can make it loop seamlessly.

I wish it wasn't this way but Toby puts up every song on RUclips/spotify/etc. as a perfect single loop. I think the point is you can use most music apps to loop a single song so it plays just like it would in game, but for what you do it is pretty disorienting when the song just ends at the end of the first loop.

    Mandela effect time:
You didn't already do BIG SHOT?!
Tbh, I tend to avoid just straight up suggesting Toby Fox tracks because they will always be a banger and just saying "you should listen to them" is a given.
Honestly, I'd probably just recommend just playing Deltarune chapters 1 and 2. The game is free to play and it should only take a couple of hours to get through them. And while Toby says the game is designed for people who have played Undertale, you can play them in either order as they're separate from one another.

I haven't played Deltarune yet, but if it's like Undertale, there's some location music, but you also get a lot of character/boss or event music... So yeah... You're probably more likely to get a character or event vibe than a location vibe... Although you might... Like Waterfall is a location in Undertale and I think you recognised that... But you know?
And yeah, I totally got Megadrive/Genesis vibes from these... There's like a fuzziness to the sounds or something... I initially thought Sonic, but maybe just because I'm most familiar with it compared to the others.

Damn, for a short song Rude Buster slaps hard! I think I've been watching too many of your videos though, because a one point I thought that it reminded of something from Megman, and then you said the same thing seconds later. Then when you said it sounded like a Genesis game I was like "Yeah, it sounds like Shinobi"... and of course you copied me again!

If you're willing to try something from a more niche game, I suggest Absolute Zero from The Void Rain Upon Her Heart,
a (not-XXX) game about cute alien women bringing love to big scary monsters, meaning it feature which _totally does not_ feature music with electric guitar.
If you need more stuff, I suggest following up with Negative Matter from the same game.

We still don't really know how Deltarune relates to Undertale. It seems to take place in some kind of alternate universe version of Undertale's world but we only have Chapters 1 and 2 of a planned 7 at the moment so lots of plot/lore stuff is still up in the air.
