The first time Field of Hopes and Dreams plays in the game there's a little music credit in the top left of the screen telling you you're listening to Field of Hopes and Dreams. This is the *only* time this has happened in the game which shows such a high amount of confidence in the quality of the song to draw such explicit attention to a specific track. And Toby was 100% right to do so, Field of Hopes and Dreams wound up becoming pretty much THE Deltarune track despite just being an area theme.
Toby Fox is just of of those people I'm always constantly impressed by and envious of at the same time. Like, travelling to Japan to hang with Sakurai (another personal role model) and play some Smash Bros while having one of his Undertale characters included in game, interviewing Yoko Shimomura (yet another personal role model) and chatting about composing music, being brought on to compose some music for Pokemon, dropping games and soundtracks that never leave your head. Dude is living life on max stats.
Even those who are masters of the crafts they’re doing started somewhere. When thinking back on some of his earliest works you see the much more beginnings. Homestuck in particular was a blessing and curse for him, both thanks to the work he’s done on it proving as amazing inspiration for later, and yet also dragging him into a mire of controversy and negative stigmas that people sometimes still hold over him. Yet, every master has made mistakes like this, and also mistakes that end in their favor too. Undertale wasn’t even the game he truly wanted to make, but rather simply what he could make with the time and budget he had at the time, and in spite of that it soared to heights unfathomable over a decade ago. So instead of glazing on the spectacle that was those dazzling heights, think on the origins as well. As only learning from the pasts and adapting to the present may one strive for a brighter future, one like what Toby has paved for himself. One like Indies have truly done in the past decade to finally start breaking out, with everything from Celeste to Hades to many, many others.
yeah most of the short tracks (and the long ones) in undertale and deltarune are designed to simply loop cleanly if you let them repeat, as you did almost immediately with chaos king. and he always puts them on the soundtrack as just the minimal single loop. in general, i'd just loop the really short ones as a rule for this (these) series
yeah, even when commissioned to work on pokemon it seems to be a part of his style that his songs loop by going back to the start of the file again and repeating the intro, and it always sounds natural. it's definitely not a technology constraint, OGG files like undertale's can have loop points baked into them
Deltarune uses a lot of leitmotifs just like in Undertale, in Field of Hopes and Dreams you can hear it very clearly with the D# C# B F# D# E C# B B chords and it is called the Don't Forget leitmotif
UNDERTALE was more a prototype. deltarune is the game Toby originally wanted to make. The runaway success of UNDERTALE let that happen. They're anagrams of each other, share characters, but are otherwise unrelated. ...ish.
Deltarune is considered a spiritual successor to Undertale. It reuses a lot of characters, but (as far as we know) they bear little relation to their Undertale versions. Also, Deltarune is technically not "complete" yet, with only parts 1 and 2 having been released, and Chapters 3 and 4 supposed to come out this fall. After that, Chapters 5, 6 and 7 are estimated to be done by 2027, meaning the game will have spent almost a decade in development since its initial release.
Well, 2027 is a really optimistic assumption. + the game originates from a fever dream Toby had in 2011, so it would be something like 17 years of development
Toby Fox wears his influences in themes and music on his sleeve, in the most flattering way possible. The way his games and music have sort of slotted into my memory as like; always having been there, at least for me, is wild lol.
Its funny that you mentioned it, but what I noticed in second chapter, is that he seems to use Sega Genesis soundfonts/or straight up virtual YM2612 synth on Deltarune, since there's a lot of them been made lately, and pretty cheap, some with popular games presets or you can just feed them game files directly, like in "RYM2612" that I bought last year. He used SNES soundfonts on Undertale mostly, from Pokemon and Earthbound games. And in Deltarune it sounds just like Sonic games.
So in terms of whether Undertale or Deltarune came first... Both did! Toby came up with Deltarune first, but decided it was way too ambitious for a first project, so he decided to make Undertale as his first completely original game instead, as something smaller scale for his first foray. So Deltarune was the first one conceived, but Undertale was the first one to be actually made. And some stuff from Deltarune made it into Undertale instead -- apparently Bonetrousle from Undertale (Which I believe you've listened to) was originally going to be Deltarune's standard battle theme!
Toby has come a long way. Crazy how Toby Fox pretty much started early in his career doing Earthbound rom hacks to now actually making songs for nintendo
Deltarune Chapter 1 came out in 2018, 3 years after Undertale's release in 2015. At the time, Toby claimed that the rest wouldn't release until it was all ready. However, he released Chapter 2 for free in 2021, citing his desire to give people something during the pandemic. Chapters 3 and 4 are nearing completion, possibly releasing end of this year or the start of next year.
Fields of Hopes and Dreams is actually one of my favorites from this OST! I hope you get to listen to "Rude Buster" sometime too. And perhaps "NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A" and "BIG SHOT" (as their title suggest they're connected :P)
Deltarune is sort of a spiritual successor to Undertale? Its not actually sequel, but uses many of Undertale's character in a new setting. The game has been being released episodically. So far, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 have been released. Toby says that Undertale wasn't the game he wanted to make, it was something he made with his novice game-making skills (some practice game, huh!). Deltarune is, apparently, the game he had actually wanted to make. Not only do the titles of Undertale and Deltarune sound similar to each other in construction, they're anagrams of each other! Field of Hopes and Dreams is still one of my favorite songs from the game so far, truly iconic. Chapter 2 has some awesome bangers too though! Chaos King is the final boss music for Chapter 1.
I wouldn't say it absolutely "isn't" a sequel to Undertale since Toby Fox does intend people to play Undertale first. We just don't really know what the connection is, exactly. There is a connection though.
@@LowSkillPlays I like to think of it as a sorta alternate universe. An alternate universe that also seemingly has an in-universe lore reason for existing but that's a lot to explain in a comment lol
