Did you try cleaning the throttle body? Sometimes the build up on the throttle body or inside the IAC housing will cause a high idle situation. When you checked the vacuum lines, how did you do it? Great video and info, thx! My 1996 grand cherokee is having shifting problems and this video helped me understand the parts. Now when I go to my mechanic, I'll have some ideas to share with them.
The 2002 4L WJ(wife jeep) 150k miles idled very rough was hard to start. I replaced plugs, fuel filter, & coil pack still had same issues. Next day replaced crankcase vent hoses, and the manifold vacuum hoses. All old hoses were cracked. Fixed rough idle and stalling but still hard to start, runs good once started. Found out the new Auto Zone fuel filter didn't have a regulator. Replaced with Advanced Auto filter. Used anti seize on the 4 throttle body bolts. I always use Anti-seize. Runs good.
Very explanatory!! Helps a bunch. Almost blew $500 on several parts I thought it would be. But I always am looking for videos like this to help me explore my Jeep more. 😀😊👏👍👍 Lol
Thanks Bud, haven't reached out in years. I've got another 01 grand. Core 4×4/ 2.5 coil lift, adjustable trac bar, everything underneath. My idle started increasing to about 1000 rpm's out the blue. Thank s for the video as old as it is. I know the problem.
Thanks Great Video! 6mo with 97xj ! Woo Hoo! Anyway Flushed cooling system then the misfires began making me crazy the put put. Did a in place rebuild, replaced Cylinder head with a 7120 new plugs, wires, h2o pump ran great till the other day. JY trip on Saturday. I 'll be a fixin!
Thanks, good video. The mechanic charged me to diagnose $250 and said, "we don't know what is wrong." "It might be the MAP sensor." They first said the tranny. I changed the map sensor. Didn't fix it. I am going to go pick up the TPS and the IAC.
Great video! Very clear and concise. I'm having random stalls, no warning. Almost like key was turn off. Always restarts and otherwise run good. Going to clean these parts.
Same here with me... It runs perfectly fine otherwise, but stalls out when idling. My idle has been low, about 500rpm, and I think it's about 700 normally. Anyway, it sucks! I wish I could just adjust a screw to raise my idle rpm! Have a great day, I hope your able to fix your vehicle.
Turned out that an O2 sensor wire was dragging on the drive shaft and was shorting out. It eventually burned out the fuse that controls accident gas shutoff system.
Thank you very much I have a 08 jeep commander and I am having issues. You video has clarified some issues that I had before such as getting to know all the sensors. You've made it very simple to understand.
Omg thank you so much for this. The other day my jeep stalled and felt like my trans was slipping and my idle is crazy I was pricing out things in my mind
Thank you mine just went out and I was driving and it wouldn’t shift, I thought my transmission took a crap too lol but you’ve explained everything so now I know! Appreciate the explanations!
Thanks for the great explanation on the throttle body sensors! BTW, with a rough idle I was prepared to remove the Idle sensor, but discovered that the hose clamp securing the filtered air passage to the throttle body had worked loose. Perhaps the K&N air filter aggravated this issue, but it's now another item to frequently check.
I wanna thank you for that info. 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V8 here and I've had the launch forward on 1, 2 and 3rd gear before and it turns out i had bad IAC Valve like you said. Seemed so much like it wAs my trans slipping or a band slip. I have a IAC Valve and Throttle Position Sensor on the way from Rock Auto both under $15 each. I also smelled fuel on startup with some rumbling and it turns out TPS and IAC Valve do that when they are old and going out. I also put Berrymans Chem-13 injector + fuel system cleaner in my gas tank and it's fixed a lot of the startup problems. Can't thank you enough D&E
Great video&instructions.. I recently got a 88 XJ that runs fine sitting, soon as I pull off,it sputters like it's not getting gas, or to much gas/air.Will change fuel filter&check out everything you mentioned. Thanks!
Thanks for not pretending to know-it-all. You already know A LOT! Does not having the wire through the accordian hose mean that I don't have a Mass Air Flow Sensor on my 1999 Grand Cherokee 4.0L? I have been getting intermitant engine cut out while driving down the road. Some folks attribute that to the MAFS. I bought it with 60K miles on it and put another 145K on it. The rear driver window started opening whenever it felt like it. I installed a salvaged Body Control Module and it still does it. My next guess is the window control inside that door. Any other suggestions? I am glad you like making these videos. Please continue!
Thanks man. Was just going to clean the TB but now I think I need a new TPS. Sometimes I have a little trouble getting between 4th + 5th when I get on the freeway.
Very helpful and cheap fix. I’m having a lot of the issues you’re talking about as systems on the new Jeep I bought. I thought these were transmission related. I haven’t checked the throttle body but I have a feeling this will help with my P0171 code I’m running and my idling and shifting issues.
My TJ takes along crank to start and sometimes two cranks, I changed the pump, cleaned the injectors replaced the spark plugs and still the same problem, I'll appreciate an advice, thanks great video !!
Hmm... I assume you dont have any Check engine lights? You can try disconnecting these sensors one at a time to see if there is any chance./ When they are disconnected the ECU (obviously) cannot read them a reverts to a standard setting. if you disconnect on and your long crank goes away, that sensor needs to be changed. FYI, disconnecting these WILL throw check engine codes, but they can be cleared ant they will not come back. feel free to email me if you want to chat more about this issue dandeoffroad@gmail.com
Right on. When cleaning the IAC housing once it’s removed from the throttle body, what have you resealed it with. According to my guys at the local Dodge dealer parts department, a gasket for that was never offered.
Thanks man! I learned a lot from this video! Changed out my TPS on my own (this is a big frickin deal as I'm not prone to being mechanically inclined) and hopefully that fixed the stalling and lurching problem. I drove it for a while last night and it didn't do it, but the real test will be this morning after sitting all night!
Thank you I didn’t know much about the IAC and map sensor , I have a 98 tj 3sp auto , sometimes gets a jerking or bucking in the throttle so I’ve replaced the tps and cps with hv wells sensors but still going to inspect my distributor ect , but never check the iac and map so now I will
Observation. Just remove the air filter cover for more room. 4 clamps :( also, when removing the throttle body cables, make sure you show exactly how to remove them. I thought i could just "pop" off the cruise control cable. Well, I broke the the plastic piece. Try replacing that :( I had to get one made with a 3d printer. Instead, you need to 'slide' it off the cable. I ended up super gluing it back together but it was definitely a problem that could have be avoided. Anyway, just trying to give some advice to someone who may have this problem. Cheers
Yep, I watch this video now and cringe that I didn't think to pop the entire air box assembly off. It is hard to watch. Haha. You are absolutely correct about that and the throttle cables. Thanks for the feedback
Amazing mechanic so wish you were in mich. to call and pick your brain ,my best friend just passed away and he was such a blessing with helping car problems 😢😢
Thank you so much for showing me all this I am having trouble with some of the things that you're talking about that ECU I am going to replace it and see if that helps so glad that I found you on here I subscribed and I will be watching more thanks
My jeeps check engine light is on throwing DTC P0122 throttle position sensor. Symptoms are low idiling and stalling when comming to a stop it usual Idols around 600rpm when starting. I’m gona clean the butterfly out and check the IAC sensor. Along with checking the other sensors. Great video thanks man
You had a great explanation on this. Have you ever disconnected the sensor separately to diagnose? my 96 Cherokee classic will only run 10 -15 minutes primarily in hotter weather and just dies at all rpm (idle or going hwy). No noticeable trans issues at all. TPS only removed has high idle then dies. all 3 removed high idle then dies. MAP only idles good but did not have the time tonight to let run more then 10 minutes. All sensors look original with a 200k miles but not sure. Dont have the money to replace all, since i have already did a toon-up with fuel filter, new gas, spark&wires, battery & air filter. it does have a cracked manifold pipe but has had it for the last year and just started the dyeing with this new season? any suggestions?
I went through some puddles, and my 96 Grand Cherokee started missing and wouldn't idle. At first I thought it might be the distributor cap and wires are old. I cleaned the throttle body, and took off the IAC. Cleaned it. Jeep ran great, but then cut off. Restarted but missed real bad. I have some clamps on computer because the 3 plugs were not making a good connection. I guess I'll take throttle body completely off and do what you did in this video. I'm 400 miles away from 300 thousand. I love Jeeps and want to keep it going.
Great video. I have a 2000 Wrangler that idles kinda rough and when you put it in drive or reverse with the break on it is rough as well, almost seems like its pushing too hard against the brake. Put in neutral and it smooths out or when you drive it seems ok. I bought an IAC and TPS for it. Taking the throttle body off definitely seems like the easiest way to replace the sensors.
@@DEInTheGarage I went and had the codes read again and its showing P0172(running rich). The guy I bought the jeep from replaced the IAC and TPS before I bought it. I'm googling but if you have an suggestions from past experiences I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
@@khross73 I would definitely confirm that everything on my throttle body was clean. IAC and TPS should not effect mixture, but the MAP sensor could if it was faulty or the rubber hose which connects it to the TB was ripped or missing. Usually a rich/lean situation end up being tied to an O2 sensor. I would definitely check the rubber hose on the MAP as there is no code specifically for the MAP, it just makes the engine throw other codes like running rich
@@DEInTheGarage Well, changed all 3 sensors, cleaned the throttle body, and checked the map sensor hose. I've seen no change in behaviour. Back to the drawing board :(
Had my throttle body off and cleaned it while I have been diagnosing the issue on my jeep, it was disgusting inside. Thought it was weird when I was cleaning it that there was no gasket. I put it on real quick this morning but I guess I need to pull it off again and use a gasket
Just picked up a 4.0 ... different animal than what I am use to for sure! I'm over here treating it like my 4.7 "crap they put limeaid in the fecking thing!"
HAHA... Yea, the 4.7 is a great motor, but lots of picky little things to remember. The 4.0 will run on olive oil in the crank case a gatorade in the radiator
Mine just kicked back a P0123 and P0121, and won't go into overdrive. At least my Jeep tells me my TPS is acting up. Happened after a carwash. However my cruise control goes out for a day or two after a wash, I'm thinking a wiring problem, but who knows. I'm gonna give it a good looking over when I change the TPS.
Great video. Wouldn't happen to know the part number foe the gasket that goes between the IAC housing and the throttle body would you? Mine broke when I took it apart. Thanks
Perfect explanation of the air intake. Im currently dealing with a strange problem on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor in the fall, in the hopes it would solve a strange "shuddering" and stalling, particularly after the car was run for a while and THEN restarted. Like when you go to the store and come out. So I replaced the tps and the cam shaft position sensor. I'm wondering if while putting in the tps, I created a vacuum leak at one of the rubber boots. That, or when I attached one of these sensors I didn't align it properly...also the evap purge solenoid is clicking like a metronome (normal?). I have yet to do another throttle body cleaning (although I did it 6 months ago), or install a new idle air control valve, but I have a new one and am going to attempt install and hope all of it works.
@DangusMcShwangus Did you figure anything out about the purge solenoid clicking..? Mine does the same thing occasionally.. I recently cleaned the throttle body and replaced IAC/TPS bur didn't touch the MAP. (The solenoid has done the clicking both before and after serving the TB.) I don't get any stalling or high idling, but It does seem like the engine "stumbles" a bit during idle. I also just changed out my spark plugs, wires and cap/rotor on distributor. Thanks in advance for any info!
Thank you very much. Your video helped me to clean the throttle body of my 4.0 Grand Cherokee 2000 and exchange the IOC-Sensor: idle speed is great again. I noted that the screws attaching the position sensor are stucked, I dont want to break anything there. Any ideas on how to get them loose?
Nice job. MAP = Manifold AIR Pressure. My 2010 Jeep Wrangler sometimes kicks up to 4,000 RPM when the speed reaches 55-60 MPH. And then it stays at that rev position for what feels like "weeks" (maybe 10-15 min), even if I slow down to 49. Changed the Throttle Body (since it has the TPS and other hardware integrated into one part) since the old one was in bad shape. This did not fix the surge acceleration problem. Any ideas as to why? Still troubleshooting this. Some mechanics also mentioned that it might be the Accelerator pedal (with its electronics) sending bad info to the throttle body. Have you run across this type of problem before? Anyone else have similar problems? Keep making videos. That helps a whole bunch of people.
I have a 04 Jeep Liberty, and it's surges like that at times and don't know why I'm trying to figure it out myself. But I'm going to try the throttle body cleaning and all of the above mentioned in this video, what do I have to lose. Good luck
Great explainer. Thank you! Do you have anything about high idle? I changed the IAC, checked vacuum lines and still nothing.

Thanks for your time. Your way of explaining is spot on! On my list 9f Spring Jeep projects! Cheers!
Thanks Bro! Very detailed directions, please keep doing these Jeep videos. My Lisa sure needs the help. Thank You
Thanks Great Video!
Good luck! Let us know how you make out
Same here with me...
Thank you very much
I have a 08 jeep commander and I am having issues. You video has clarified some issues that I had before such as getting to know all the sensors. You've made it very simple to understand.
Thanks. glad you found it useful
Omg thank you so much for this. The other day my jeep stalled and felt like my trans was slipping and my idle is crazy I was pricing out things in my mind
Glad this helped! Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you mine just went out and I was driving and it wouldn’t shift, I thought my transmission took a crap too lol but you’ve explained everything so now I know! Appreciate the explanations!
Absolutely. Good luck with it!
this is exactly my issue from 3rd to 4th! sometimes just kick it to 4000rpm to push it into 4. was yours giving a code?
This is an amazing explanation! You should do a video on Jeep transfer cases
Thank you so much, best tutorial I have come across for this subject matter. Extremely helpful.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful
D&E, you are the best. Thank you for every video you've made concerning the Jeep 4.0...:)
Glad you enjoy them!
@@DEInTheGarage I'm going to replace all three of those sensors, especially the one that affects the transmission..:)
Great video&instructions.. I recently got a 88 XJ that runs fine sitting, soon as I pull off,it sputters like it's not getting gas, or to much gas/air.Will change fuel filter&check out everything you mentioned. Thanks!
Good luck!
Good explanations on Throttle Body
Thanks man. Was just going to clean the TB but now I think I need a new TPS. Sometimes I have a little trouble getting between 4th + 5th when I get on the freeway.
I would give that a try for sure
Very helpful and cheap fix. I’m having a lot of the issues you’re talking about as systems on the new Jeep I bought. I thought these were transmission related. I haven’t checked the throttle body but I have a feeling this will help with my P0171 code I’m running and my idling and shifting issues.
Good luck!
Thanks for Sharing your experience. Very informative 👍
Great job very informative and to the point. Thank You.
Thank you! Very informative my new Jeep owning daughter.
That was best explanation I've ever heard
Very enlightening
I'll do this on my 04 wj at 212mi thanks Doug
It will probably help a bunch! Good luck!
GREAT VIDEO...exactly what I was looking for!! 👍
Did it fix your problem?
Did it fix it
It did not 🫤
@@strengthcoachsam fu*ck my dog, same thing is happening to my jeep
Has it been fixed? If so, how?
Accurate 4.0 knowledge.
Always in fashion.
Most helpful video I’ve watched so far! Thanks
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you like it
Thanks man. I had a TPS code pop up when I went to smog my TJ. I'm going to clean the throttle body and replace TPS sensor. Video def helps.
good luck!
Great explanation of symptoms
I got know my throttle body finally! His name is Phil, he LOVES air and his favorite letter is "O."
Good luck!
Great video and education. Big thanks.
Very helpful. Just ordered new sensors. Thanks.
Good luck!
Great video thanks man
Good luck! Those throttle position sensors are absolutely notorious on the 4.0. They go all the time and cause havoc. good news is it is an easy fix
Good stuff. I been think of taking off my throttle body to clean it. My idle never been great even after replacing the IAC.
A good cleaning certainly never hurts
TPS was intermittently dying and i thought i had trans issues but i replaced now im running great! 231k miles on a 2000 4.0 grand cherokee
Great video! Thanks. I'm tracking down an issue of rough idling when I let off the gas. Maybe this'll help.
Thanks. Nice job. I'll be doing this with much more confidence now, thanks to your video..
Your videos are interesting and useful. Thank you.
300k?! That is nuts! I would definitely check the TPS if you were in water before it went south. Good luck!
Great video. Very useful. Thank you!
Literally the last thing I would of thought of. Thanks
Good luck!
Excellent video! I learned a lot....thank you
Great video.
Yea, it definitely is. Good luck with it!
@@DEInTheGarage will do. Really appreciate your help
@@DEInTheGarage Well, changed all 3 sensors, cleaned the throttle body, and checked the map sensor hose. I've seen no change in behaviour. Back to the drawing board :(
Thanks for sharing this. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida
Great video. Helped me on my 1998 jeep wrangler.
Had my throttle body off and cleaned it while I have been diagnosing the issue on my jeep, it was disgusting inside. Thought it was weird when I was cleaning it that there was no gasket. I put it on real quick this morning but I guess I need to pull it off again and use a gasket
The air box on top of the throttle body also has a 10mm bolt on the left side holding it down...
Excellent,thank you sir,that was a great help
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback
Thank you and Good demonstration. Immensely helpful.
Great video! Thanks for posting it. Keep ‘em coming!
Thanks for watching!
Very educational video it a blessings for me. Thanks
great info and delivery! thanks buddy
You can sometimes just in plug the tps sensor and it work for a short time
Excuse me unplug not in plug
Haha, I knew what you meant and that is true!
Can you explain what the benefits were putting on the throttle body?
Great video. Wouldn't happen to know the part number foe the gasket that goes between the IAC housing and the throttle body would you? Mine broke when I took it apart. Thanks
I’m getting a weak idle at start and takes a second or two to crank. Cleaned throttle and replaced IAC. Still doing it. I’ll try the MAP next
Perhaps check fuel pressure? Possibly old spark plugs?
it ended up being my battery. Just threw a new odyssey in it and it fires right up. Idle sounds perfect now
Perfect explanation of the air intake.
Perfect. Fixed my problem. Thanks.
I did mine and it works great
That helps a whole bunch of people.
hello… my car have same problem with.. u got the solve now?
I have a 04 Jeep Liberty, and it's surges like that at times and don't know why I'm trying to figure it out myself. But I'm going to try the throttle body cleaning and all of the above mentioned in this video, what do I have to lose. Good luck
Great video man
Glad you enjoyed it. thanks for the positive feedback!
