There are two lead guitarist that trade-off on lead and Rhythm and sometimes they play the same time.

The "Wasted Years" in this song is essentially about touring. The band felt very homesick during their time on the road on a tour that was nearly a year long and it felt as if they wasted a whole year just touring and doing the same thing just in different countries.

This is off their album Somewhere In Time. This was the first Iron Maiden album I ever heard. This literally changed my life. All I had heard was what my parents listened to, what was on the radio and MTV. Iron Maiden wasn't on any of those lists except for Saturday Night's at Midnight on a show on MTV called Headbanger's Ball but I wasn't old enough at the time to stay up to watch it. I heard this at a friend's house because his dad was a Maiden fan. When I heard this it's like something clicked in my head that said "This is MY kind of music!" And let me know there was so much great music out there better than what was played on top 40 radio. I've searched and still search for great bands that the mainstream ignores.

Wasted Years..the present time is what a lot of us will be looking back on as "the golden years." I look back at 2001-02 and as much as I struggled back then, I look back fondly at that era. You never miss it till it's gone away. Don't waste to your time, man. If there's something you want to do, do it now!
BTW...I had to sell my last guitar...2020 Gibson Les Paul 50s Standard...because it was way too heavy. In my 20's and 30s, I'd get disappointed when I'd pick up a guitar and it was light. Now in my mid 40s, I welcome the lighter ones. As long as the neck doesn't fall to the floor when I let go, it's all good.

I'm older than you and I've tried giving other genres of music a chance. I ALWAYS come back to METAL. It's eternal/timeless in nature. You need to learn more than you'll appreciate this type of music. There's a reason it's relevant today and still going strong.

Adrian Smith, is the guitarist you're asking about. He and Dave Murray share lead time and both are outstanding guitarist. Dave has a more punk sound to his playing as that was sorta the style they were playing in the first several years along with their first two releases "Iron Maiden" and "Killers".
You should listen to "The Duelists" next. It's off of their 1985 release "Powerslave"

They do get tired, but think about it like this: The Rock works out every day so to him working out is easy now. These musicians play their instruments all the damn time, it took great work and endurance to get where they are, but it is so much easier for them to play a whole concert than it is for us to even attend one! :)

Maiden started with two lead and rhythm players Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. Smith left and was replaced by Janick Gers. He returned for the Brave New World album and Maiden launched the 3 Guitar lineup. Smith is mainly a rhythm player, Murray and Gers are mainly leads but they trade roles constantly. Iron Maiden are all athletes. Bruce Dickinson was an Olympic level fencer; the rest are soccer players and Dave Murray did play soccer professionally for a short time in the late 70's.

The 3 guitarrists of Maiden are too fucking good, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers, and this solo was made for Adrian! 😌😌😎😎🤘🏻🤘🏻

Adrian Smith you heard in the solo actually plays rhythm guitarr and Mr. Dave Murray basically plays the (best) soli in Maiden on his lead-guitar.

I’m a year late to this, but you were raving about “that boy”, Adrian Smith their guitarist (who also wrote this song) after the solo, he recently formed a side project with Richie Kotzen called Smith/Kotzen and I’d really recommend checking it out, it really shows how talented Adrian truly is.

my grim takeaway has always been that while you yearn for the past, you are living the days you will yearn for tomorrow.
or, today may be darker than yesterday, but not nearly as dark as tomorrow.

"Don't they get tired?" Probably, but not from one song. They play 2 hour long shows, and while they do have some slower songs, they still keep the energy up for the whole set. Even today, when they're all well into their 60s.

I played guitar in a metal band and I can confirm your arms and hands get mad tired from playing intense riffs and solos like this. I recall many times being out of stamina like halfway through a song during a live show and using all of my willpower to keep playing to the end of the song. Afterwards my right arm would be cramping from all the fast picking and the muscles were pumped up like I just did too many reps at the gym. Respect to these guys for putting on such a show
