Kommos beach Heraklion Crete Greece

Komos beach is located on the south coast 62 km from Heraklion. The neighbouring destinations are Kalamaki, which lies just by the northern edge of Komos beach and famous Matala, which is 4 km to the South.
Komos beach is a southern part of the 9 km wide Messara bay and it's quite easily accessible. You can get to the parking place above the beach by car and then walk few meters down to the beach.
Komos used to be important ancient port of nearby Minoan palace Faistos. The excavations of old Komos are uncovered just behind the beach.
Komos beach is spacious and approximately 1 km long sandy beach.The northern part of the beach is popular place of nudists. Actually Komos beach was also favourite place of Hippies in 60's. Several tamarisk trees around the beach provide natural shadow.
The view of the whole Messara bay can be seen from the place by church of Agios Panteleimonas, which is built on slope above the southern part of the beach.
Before going to Komos beach, it's suggested to consider the current weather - mainly wind conditions. When strong west winds come then Komos beach is exposed to huge waves and so not suitable for swimming. Visiting Komos beach requires also to be respectful and careful as the rare and protected sea turtles Carreta carreta have their nests there since May till September.
