The original thumbnail had a blacked out silhouette of the car was just something like "Can you guess what has replaced my Audi?" or similar. BMW Clearly was annoyed that there was no mention of the model in the title of the video nor any image in the thumbnail and so Carwow have corrected it with a new thumbnail and altered title. That's why the poll and start of the video no longer make sense.

I disagree with anyone that says these BMW diesel engines are dull. As an owner of a 435d, I can honestly say these diesel engines are phenomenal. While I understand the allure of a nice big engine petrol, diesel is great for real world driving because the torque is where you want it, at the lower end of the rev range.
g9icy 100% agree. People just jump on the diesel hate wagon because they have no idea of real world driving and running costs. The 35D gives a lot of powerful petrol engined cars a run for their money and uses a lot less fuel.
If you want high torque get an electric. Beats diesel for torque and instant delivery AND running costs which is one of the main reasons people buy diesels
Please test the lights at night, would love to see a comparison between the years line up some cars from different decades, Halogen,projectors,bi-xenon,led then laser lights. Would love to see how far we have come in vehicle lights, I know it may sound daft but Alot of people struggle down dark roads with halogen so would be nice to see if the jump to LED is enough for some people to add on a new car as I know all to well it can be a pricey option. As Matt would say,it should be bloomin standard on a car like this. 😂
My M4 has adaptive LEDs and its amazing at night in the middle of nowhere, even with the adaptive full beam not on its perfect, regular LEDs on my 3 are great too, but not quite as fancy when on high beam assist.
YES, that is a thing that I miss from car reviews, they NEVER talk about how good the lights are, I really don't understand that, for me how good the lights are is very important for me when I buy a new car

The matrix led lights on my tiny mazda mx5 are phenomenal. They are standard in the top trim in DE. After using them I am suggesting everyone change their car to one that has this feature. Especially people that re not getting any younger ;-)

Interior Nightime Illumination! Why do car reviewers rarely show what it looks like inside at night? Maybe it's just me, but I like to know what it looks like at night and it does influence my car purchase decisions!
Just love being dazzled by modern lights, active matrix or not. The owner sees the road perfectly but all that the driver of the oncoming vehicle can see is piercing white light and thinks that they're literally having a near death experience as they struggle to see the road ahead. My dipping rear view mirror is now claiming benefits and watching CarWow on RUclips all day long because it has been made completely redundant. It's time the acceptable brightness levels were re-evaluated particularly on 4x4s and SUVs. (My pet hate if you weren't sure)

It isnt the 340D mate. Its the 340i which came out in 2015, petrol model. The 335d is yet to be replaced. The new one will be an M340d based on the new 3 series. The 335d is probably faster than the 840d. It has similar power and is lighter.

Just for fun you need to do some reverse drag races, sounds easy but I think you'll be surprised. Also see if your cars launch control works in reverse!
I like the M6 Gran Coupe much better than this new 8 Series - Something with the stance, the front wheel overhangs and the hood to A-Pillar connection that keeps nagging my eyes.

Those headlights are great for the person sitting in the car. But for people driving lowerl cars on the highway, they are absolutely blinding. Anyone else have this issue?
Yes but the car doesnt even have to be lower. Everytime I see a new car with new LED headlights I am always prepared to be completly blind for a second

In theory Matt in your new BMW 840D you can race drag race in reverse easily, just drive down the track forwards then using the reverse memory steering you'll be laughing!
Matt, what about doing a test between this 840d and it’s « predecessor » the 640d It would be good to see the real differences, and what you get extra vs the 640 d
do the economy challendge, on how many miles you can eak from one tank of fuel, would be interesting. And try as hard as you can. Then do it with the petrol V8 and compare the differenses in fuel cost.
Thats a really lovely car. Love the park assist 👌🏼 Yes it may take longer, but its just cool. We have it on my wife's Golf and our 5 year old son absolutely loves it 😍 That's worth paying the extra for it alone.
The side profile looks a lot like a c63 coupe, paint it black and bash some amg wheels and calipers on and you’d probably be fooled, nice car matt you’re living the dream
Hy Matt. Good review as usual. Only thing worth extra mentioning about the laser lights is that don´t always work. They only work if you drive + 60 km per hour (aprrox 40 miles) and if the camera in the window does not detect other cars. Because the laser beam can actually cause eye retina damage. So in daily situations the laser beam will hardly ever work. Only the led high beam. . This is one thing the salesmen will never tell at the dealership. That is why i didn´t buy it on my 7 series. It is not just bmw. All laserlight vehicles have this similar safety built in.
The laser light cannot damage the retina because no laser beam is sent as outgoing light. The light is only reduced so that oncoming traffic is not dazzled

Have a diesel 5 series -- after falling in love with the increased torque (over the naturally aspirated version), I put a "Race Chip in it to increase the performance by 10 to 20% on the HP side, since you give up ponies in favor of torque) but I also got the same boost in torque -- now headed towards 500lbs/ft. HP is now at 295 or so). This thing moves for a luxury sedan. It's a joy to drive and so quick off the line with good MPG. Although I haven't driven the new 8, I can see why he went with it...

as someone who works for bmw and has driven the 840d plenty of times, unrivalled handling and a very premium car overall, BUT the Diesel engine is underwhelming for anyone who has driven a 3 litre diesel before. Has to be the petrol

M5 E60 does 0-60 in like 4.3-4.6 seconds with the V10. Today’s diesel does the same or better, yup improvements have been made
well this has awd, thats is why beyond 0-60 it will be worse in every aspect, but i guess most people that buy such cars will ever go much beyond 80-90 on a day to day basis

Those headlights are great for the person sitting in the car. But for people driving lowerl cars on the highway, they are absolutely blinding. Anyone else have this issue?
Yes but the car doesnt even have to be lower. Everytime I see a new car with new LED headlights I am always prepared to be completly blind for a second

toxic it has laser lights technology so it will not blind u because it will make a black space around your car when you passing by

In theory Matt in your new BMW 840D you can race drag race in reverse easily, just drive down the track forwards then using the reverse memory steering you'll be laughing!

do the economy challendge, on how many miles you can eak from one tank of fuel, would be interesting. And try as hard as you can. Then do it with the petrol V8 and compare the differenses in fuel cost.
Bmw must’ve gotten the inspiration for that glass gear selector from Volvo who used it first on the XC90 T8 I believe.

Thats a really lovely car. Love the park assist 👌🏼 Yes it may take longer, but its just cool. We have it on my wife's Golf and our 5 year old son absolutely loves it 😍 That's worth paying the extra for it alone.

Hy Matt. Good review as usual. Only thing worth extra mentioning about the laser lights is that don´t always work. They only work if you drive + 60 km per hour (aprrox 40 miles) and if the camera in the window does not detect other cars. Because the laser beam can actually cause eye retina damage. So in daily situations the laser beam will hardly ever work. Only the led high beam. . This is one thing the salesmen will never tell at the dealership. That is why i didn´t buy it on my 7 series. It is not just bmw. All laserlight vehicles have this similar safety built in.
The laser light cannot damage the retina because no laser beam is sent as outgoing light. The light is only reduced so that oncoming traffic is not dazzled

Have a diesel 5 series -- after falling in love with the increased torque (over the naturally aspirated version), I put a "Race Chip in it to increase the performance by 10 to 20% on the HP side, since you give up ponies in favor of torque) but I also got the same boost in torque -- now headed towards 500lbs/ft. HP is now at 295 or so). This thing moves for a luxury sedan. It's a joy to drive and so quick off the line with good MPG. Although I haven't driven the new 8, I can see why he went with it...

as someone who works for bmw and has driven the 840d plenty of times, unrivalled handling and a very premium car overall, BUT the Diesel engine is underwhelming for anyone who has driven a 3 litre diesel before. Has to be the petrol
