I leased one of these back in 2020. I was 22 years old and suddenly you could get into a BMW 840i for £400 per month with a £2k deposit. It was an unbelievable deal and trust me the car was well worth the money. When the lease came to an end there was nothing quite like it on the market as prices had gone up like crazy. I absolutely loved that car.

I had an 840i last year, and loved it so much that I swapped it for an M8 Comp last week. It's definitely not 'too much' I've been gunning it non-stop, I don't think I'll ever get bored of hearing the V8 roar!

@@PardeepSingh-ls1vd I did strongly consider the 850 but I've never had an M car before and wanted to go for the full fat version if I was going to make the change!
Sunroof is a fair point but my 840i never had one and I prefer the carbon roof on the M8 anyway. Comfort wise there's definitely a compromise with the much stiffer and sporty M8, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for more power and the much more aggressive styling.
Having also had the 840 I did want something that looked a BIT more different on the exterior so the M8 it was!
If I was new to the 8 Series, I'd probably say the M850 is the sweet spot between comfort and power - hope this helps.

Last summer I set my heart on an LC500 convertible for all the right reasons; stunning styling, peachy V8, gorgeous interior if you can ignore the rotten touchpad .... and then took it on a 2hr test drive around Cologne, where I live. Shock, horror .... the scuttle-shake was unbearable and the fuel economy about 20mpg on that run. So, by way of a comparison, I took a BMW M850i convertible on the same test drive and enjoyed very smooth, rattle free progress and about 26mpg. It's now on my drive, and I love it. My dad had two of the original E31 8 series. He had a 1992 one, original 1st gen. Then he had a 1994 one, which was still original 1st gen, but better brakes, steering, it just handled a lot better. Both were 840's by the way. The 1992 one he had for 4 years, then sold it and then had the 1994 one he had for 2 years in the UK, then sent it to Cyprus where he had it for another couple of years then selling it there. I drove the 1994 one, what a motor! Effortless driving experience. I've never really gelled with this one, it just doesn't do anything for me. this was in the early 2000's by the way.

It can't compare to something as special as the LC500, which looks a bit like an LFA with an LFA engine (minus 2 cylinders) and a gearbox they made an effort to be entertaining and a unique interior. I think you MUST spec those glass things and a two-tone interior to make it somewhat interesting. I had a M140i when they very first came out in 2016 and the interior was bland on that, but like for like it came in so much cheaper than the S3 or A45 of the same time and in my opinion, is still to this day a far better car to drive. I haven’t driven this 8, but imagine it’s much the same. If driven back to back with the s53 and an Audi equivalent, I imagine they’d be better wafters but not as fun when making haste.

Agree about the standard 840 coupe impracticality and cramped interior, however the 640 / 840 Gran coupes are gorgeous [if big]. A mate bought one 2022 OMA. AIUI all the 840d's have 4WD and other options as standard, which means the massive torque of this engine is applied to the road.

A really excellent review. You clearly express your opinion of the positives and negatives in an honest and fair manner, whilst at the same time entertaining us with your humour. I am however a big fan of the Hybrid (and at the same time, dislike vegetarians intensely), rating it far more superior to any other engine type, Electric, Diesel or Petrol-only. I would also buy a hybrid over a plugin-Hybrid so long as the price difference is more than £5,000 (at least in my country).

I have an '08 650i and while the LC500 V8 is the dream replacement (The one Matt tested in red with tan interior is bedroom poster-worthy), but I do find myself eyeing the 840i from time to time, but I have the same problem as Matt; it doesn't stir my soul. Even worse, I look at what an 840i does and all I can think is it's no better than my old 650i. I have no doubt it handles better on a backroad, but it's much heavier, no faster and the same on fuel. I like the quirky looks of my car, the 8-Series is very 'safe'; standard BMW (before they went crazy). All it's really got is the ultra-modern tech, and by it's nature, tech is hard to be passionate about and so it doesn't tickle me in the right places the way the Lexus does. And if I wanted to replace my car on a bit of a budget, the last-gen 6-Series coupe is even cheaper than the 8's.
However, if someone I knew bought an 840i, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it. I love 2+2 GTs and they seem to be a dying breed so even a slightly generic one like the 840i is worthy.

One of the best looking modern BMWs but they wanted it to be a Bentley Continental competitor and it isn’t that. It’s not a comparison for the S Class Coupé either, but I do really like it nonetheless.

I think the comparison with the Lexus is somehow unfair. You can't buy the Lexus for the same price - as you pointed out - and you wouldn't be able to buy the Lexus as a 4 door coupe either.
I had a 640d cabrio for 3 years and I loved it. Would have an 8 series I think. Nevertheless thank you for another great video!!!

I've driven two of these in 'grand coupe' guise as a loaner car from BMW when mine was in for a recalls on two separate occasions. One was specced similar to yours on the video and the other was the same but had the white (Ivory I think it was called) interior with the sunroof. I had the same opinion as you, it was a bit boring and uninspiring with everything black and a black headliner. When I stepped in to the other one it was like a different car, completely uplifted the interior and made it a nicer place to be. I'd go with the ivory or merino interior.

4:25 You can also park the car with it while you’re standing next to it. Fantastic party trick. 😁
5:29 at that screen you can pinch your fingers and swipe and that will move the ‘camera’ around the car.
5:37 The Bowers & Wilkins sound system is even better (it’ll cost you a small car though). 😁
5:59 you can turn the ‘protection system off with the button next to the alarm lights. You can also override the system by pushing in the accelerator a bit (quite a bit tbh) more.

Sure as eggs are eggs, if i was wealthy enough that is, but i know deep down i'd fall out with it. The 2 door is a gobsmacking great looking car.
However you mentioned the OMG master of all coupes the LC Lexus. I'm not clever enough with words to describe that utter work of arts. If ever i'd win on the lottery then straight to Lexus Stockport and get them to find me the hybrid V6 and the V8. Best of both worlds.

Thanks for doing this review Matt. Despite being a base model that car is spec’d very well, Driving Assistant Plus (auto steering) is not a feature you see often. When you were trying to change the radio channel I’m pretty sure on this version the gesture is a two-fingered stabbing motion, not the more logical swipe gesture that you were doing. That’s the case in my girlfriend’s X3. I have a 640d M Sport (which, by the way, I’ve never really loved as was the case with you and your 6 series convertible) and I’m pretty sure the 8 will be my next car. As @chrischambers6069 said they’re great value for the money.

I had a 2012 640d and absolutely loved it. Was a bit harsh suspension wise though. Beautiful car though. Changed it for an Audi A7 which I originally hated then grew to love over the 3 years of ownership although it was never a driver's car. Lusted after the 8 series but was too new and expensive as a second hander so bought an Audi A8 (like yours recently) which was a lovely but boring car to drive. The 8 series was now coming within my budget so I now have an 840 GranCoupe which is a far more exciting car than the Audi. I've had a Merc CLS, BMW 6(2 Generations) AudiA7, AudiA8 and this BM is my favourite. The interior is better than the Audi's but not quite as dramatic as more expensive vehicles. At least it's not a Mercedes. Possibly the cheapest "premium" manufacturer.

The real excitement of the 8 series is in the convertible- as a coupe the competition trounces the 8 series coupe. However as a four seat convertible what is on the market. The six series convertible comes to mind but that is old and if your needs are for something more… again the convertible Lexus will cost you more money- but if on a budget ( admittedly a large one) the convertible 8 series might hit the spot

I got one of the mega leases a few years ago at £272 a month after a pricing error about 40 of us got. Was my favourite car since my C63 AMG years ago.
This was for the Gran Coupe 5 door which has the best looking rear end on the market today in my opinion.
It was a huge car though, very wide and long so difficult to park. They sold for £70K but you could get them new for £55K. The reverse assistance basically does you movements backwards. Good for getting out of tight spaces and kerbs. They should be cheaper by now. They are £30K used for a 3 year old.
