Exercise has proved a great benefit to my wife and I.We are both 70 with pain but in spite of this we do the gym nearly everyday and it helps the pain ironically. Also any low mood dissipates..also sleep is enhanced and the Dr is spot on regarding too many meds taken by older people..great talk

There are so many treatments that tend to focus on medicines as the correct methodology rather than the "getting active" method of prevention. This is very informative for a lot of people who don't realize how beneficial exercise can really be!!!!

Pushing yourself away from the table is the best exercise.

Everyone already knows about diet and exercise , but they dont exercise cos its hard when you are not in shape. There is one solution that is sustainable in terms of exercise for those out of shape .I lost 5 stone over about 7 months with an electric bike .If you hate exercising but really need to , it could be an option you havn't yet considered.

This is so obvious, but nobody can really understand. It's remarkable what he said, that made a lectture in the university and this was the only one students had ever there. Yes, schools of medicine just teach about diseases!!!

Anyone advocating exercise and ignoring food is 40 years behind. Try looking to Dr. Mercola, then looking into Weston A. Price.

I think he underestimates the benefits of a good diet. You have to have a balance. Skinny people can have diabetes too, if they eat too much sugar they can develop insuline resistance... etc etc.

"Getting people up and moving is a huge part of the equation of fixing the problem."
Okay. When did this "equation" get out of balance? At what point did people suddenly or steadily start moving less? Hmmm? And let's say it was about 40 years ago. That would imply that eating more refined carbohydrates in place of fat caused physical laziness.
You can't out-run or out-exercise the modern industrial diet.

I feel like he's downplaying the role of diet in good health. Exercise is important but diet/nutrition is more important.

compare the studies. Plus, exercise is the king habit that leads to better sleep and better appetite control.

Yes, diet is far more crucial than exercise. Big Data supports this hypothesis.

Agreed. There’s a synergy between them but diet, its timing, and fasting deserve far more attention, not least because the diet-health relation is less intuitive.

If you spend as much time in zone 3 (high intensity exercise) then diet is a lot less important than someone who hangs around zone 1 all the time. It's a balance depending on the out put of the person.

    • @Joyfulminimalist

No... it’s important but not as important. You can eat healthy but if you don’t move at all, your body isn’t going to work nearly as well as if you did. Whereas if your active constantly throughout the day, your body will be working very well and it metabolizes food much better. I’m somewhere in the middle- I eat healthy but I’m not feeling much better because I struggle with being sedentary with my job.

As much as I agree with this mans advise everyone should be aware that exercise is not the answer to a lousy diet. In studies comparing long time vegans and long time marathon runners both had virtually the same arterial health despite vegans not planting a foot on the pavement.

The next time I need some landscaping done in my yard, I'll be sure to contact an inactive vegan to do the work.

    • @joncarling4783
      @joncarling4783 6 лет назад +4

I'm pretty sure the non-running vegans could not, however, complete the marathon on diet alone. Having energy to do work (and play) does take exercise. I agree that diet should not be neglected, just that diet alone is not the answer.

What a comprehensive study, amazing they were able to control all the variables and find a statistically significant cohort of wholly inactive and immobile vegans
Certainly couldn't be the case that the type that would closely monitor their food to ensure they eat no animal products, while also ensuring proper nutrition Longterm with a very restrictive diet, would also likely be the type of person who was far more health conscience and far more active than average
It's great when studies definitely establish causation due to a single variable
