I bought one of these today after watching this review which led me to take one for a test drive. You are spot on in that It is a nice place to be. Its quiet, feels safe and the lights on the dash are awesome. Plus i managed 40mpg on the way home whilst doing a few vtec speedruns for good measure. Maybe it isn't as rough and ready as other hot hatches but as you say that makes this type r a car that you could live with every day. The damage Clarkson did with his review of this car was totally unwarranted IMHO. This is a really good channel you've got going here and i'm sure it will help many people in choosing their next car. Thanks for helping me.
I bought Type S the other day. Only got Type S because I do 300 miles per week to get to work and home :) but it's still quite punchy for 2.2 cdti engine.
Clarkson slagged it yet stig said it was better than the old car and gave it hot hatch of the year. Weird how people just blindly take Clarkson's view. The guy drives round in cars we can only dream of any car like this will feel a bit shite to people like him. Put him in a 1litre fiesta for a month then give him this to test and his view would be completely different I bet
Nice review mate! The FN2 has dual climate control, so the temperature control on the armrest allows the passenger to determine their preference. Funnily enough it was one reason I got the car as I swear my g/f is cold-blooded haha. She often has the temp on her side 7 - 8 degrees above mine.
I love my fn2! Yes it's not the fastest thing on the road and if I wanted a straight line monster i would of got something else but for smiles per miles its in a league of its own! Will never get tired of the noise through tunnels and second gear wheel spins bouncing off the limiter 😍
Great review, I like how you point out the pros and cons towards this car. Most people just go "Oh, its not as quick as DC5R or an Ep3, therefore it sucks", but you explained how its a much more modern day experience, interior is spot on, boot space, practicality and hence the reason why I sold my DC5R for the current Fn2R I drive today :)
I got both the Ep3 and Fn2. Just recently aquired the ep3 and I must say it sure is more "fun" to drive. The seats are more compfortable and the car just feels lighter and more aggressive on the throttle. It's not modified other than a CAI. Stock exhaust and all that. My FN2 is also stock. Still love that car. It's not as bad as Top Gear made it out to be. I have owned it for 5 years and done long trips in it (600km trips) and neither had any issues in my back or legs from extended periods of driving. Jeremy Clarkson would might have another opinon if he wasn't old and fat ;) For anyone wanting to get a FN2 my advice is: Don't expect a performance tuner. Expect a good car that looks cool and can shift when it needs too.
I'm new to ur channel and as I've got a Honda fn2 and my mate has the ep3 id see what your review was like on them .... And I have to say I think I agree with everything you said about both cars, a fair and honest review.... Will look forward to watch your other reviews on ur channel, keep up the good work.....
i sold my ep3 for an fn2 and have no regrets.i loved my ep3 but was lacking some comford ... overall they are 2 both great fun rides but when u became a little bit older (33) my advice would be the fn2 cause its a little bit more comfortable :)
I went the opposite way round. Test drove an FN2 and agree with Jamie as to the seats. I just couldn't get comfortable in it and I also didn't feel it had much traction in the wet (may have just been the tires fitted) I then test drove an EP3 and the seats were a lot better (premier edition seats) and it felt like there was more space in the cabin and when the VTEC did kick in it just felt a bit....more lol And the best bit is I saved a tonne of cash getting the EP3 over the FN2 FN2 had the better VTEC sound though 👍
wezzns b - exactly. But also yonger guys should buy the fn2. When coming to first date with an fn2 the girl goes WOOW what an amazing car you have! Coming with an ep3 and she thinks you’re 16 years old 😄 However I do love both these cars 👌🏻
Loved the review! Currently owning my 2nd EP3 because I just missed my previous one when I sold it. But after another 4y of EP3 I just can't get the Fn2 out of my head. I just think it would suit my current age of 32 better because of the daily usability but still having the K20 when I want some fun.
Great review! glad someone else has noted the ecu issues with this car my last civic did exactly the same thing. Seems to be more common than I thought happened in my second year of owning it
It's quite nice. Joking mate. I've got one of these too. You made a lot of good points. It is a good all round car, but I've got a modernised exhust which makes a huge difference to the sound. I do find the clutch very stiff though.
From what ive read, the fn2 offers 90% of the fun of the ep3 but has 200% of the liveability especially with the gt spec model. In an ever modernising world where consumers expect more, whether it be build quality, features, practicality, performance etc...i think honda did a decent job. People complained about the dc5 not being as focused the dc2. No doubt the new nsx will come under fire. Just like the fk2 has, now its gone turbo. I think people need to understand that for these cars to sell and remain in production, compromises have to be made. They have to have creature comforts, bells and whistles and stuff to appeal to the broader market. Thats where the money is, and at the end of the day, thats the reason these cars exist.
Spot on mate. That's why I chose my FN2 over an EP3. I love how the rear seats fold completely flat with the boot floor for transporting stuff and I have the GT too, so all the creature comforts to go with it. It's definitely fast enough and as can be heard from this video, stock VTEC sound is awesome. 6th Gear is brilliant for motorways too. The seat position is the only annoying thing about the car - the top of the steering wheel blocks the top of the rev counter for me.
Oh hey a couple months ago we spoke on message about ep3 and fn2s and I would up buying the fn2, had it for a few months now. I will say though the rear wing is great for blocking out high beams on motorway and day to day rear visibility hasn't been an issue.
I stupidly listened to people’s opinions on the fn2 when I was looking looking for a type r, ended up with an ep3 which was a good car. I now own an fn2 and it honestly is a better car than the ep3, both as a everyday car and as a performance car. It’s every bit as fast an the ep3, if not abit faster and it’s a far nicer place to be in. Moral of the story, don’t listen to other people and make your own opinions.
Great content as always, man. You were quite honest. So funny trying to find diplomatic ways of saying the FN2 was boring as fuck. Obviously showing respect to the owner but as viewers, we feel you :) Not a bad car but a lot less excitement and feel compared to EP3's, EK9's, etc.
I've found with the 8th gen. You don't feel the kick and power because the car is so smooth. It's there you just can't feel it so much. You clime through the KPH without even noticing.
It's not supposed to be your average daily its ment to give a you the feeling of a hot hatch. I've been looking at one of these want one as it's one of those cars you should at least own once like a mini
"Nice" sums up this car perfectly. After owning a succession of Hondas, including 2 x EP3s, this was a disappointment to drive, and lead me to the VW dealer across the road for a Golf GTI
bought the fn2 coz it is a great everyday car. my Nissan zx twin turbo just is not an everyday car with fuel prices going through the roof and its 460bhp it's kept garaged every winter.
There's clearly an air vent on the passenger side (as there is in like every car nowadays) and the passenger can change the temperature of their vent on that side. Nothing to do with the middle ones
Hi Jamie, just bought a 2009 ctr gt, quick question - how heavy/stiff was the steering in the at you drove? Trying to determine if mine is normal....cheers
Hi there. It's firm yet numb feeling. Hope this helps. You'll get used to it. You should be able to tell if the front is sliding, but otherwise there isn't any road texture or feedback that comes through the steering. The quick rack is awesome though.
My biggest criticism of the car was Honda done away with the double wishbone suspension that the ep3 had. And what also didn't help was we got this whilst Japan got the masterpiece FD2. Good review.
+Razeiken. My 205's all had torsion bars and they handled superb, but just didn't work as well with the FN2 unfortunately. I think it does get a pretty raw deal as it is still a spectacular car, but like I said it didn't help following on from the ep3 which was a more track focused, lighter and raw car.
+Razeiken. I actually owned four 1.9's over the years! And then one day got destroyed by a DC2 integra which what got me interested in Honda's. Yes the later FN2's with the Lsd will be much better. It does slightly annoy me with Honda sometimes though, you look at the ukdm vs the Jdm spec ep3, and the Jdm S2000, and of course we never got the FD2!
Re: MrStamford78 The EDM EP3 was never as good as the exported JDM-spec EP3 anyway, the EDM version had less power, softer suspension, no LSD... Shrug. The FN2 has some advantages to the European spec EP3: Although 1 more hp, it has more torque everywhere (the RSP intake manifold with it's longer runners for torque is just as good as the JDM RRC manifold really -- both manifolds are better than the EP3/DC5 versions), the RSP head casting flows 15 cfm better than that of first gen K20s (the head is identical to the JDM FD2), the latter LSD models have identical gearbox and LSD to the Japanese FD2, plus FN2 has factory lightweight flywheel. Besides a lot of the laptime difference between FN2 and FD2 is explained by the RE070 track tyres on the FD2. Putting similar tyres on the FN2 closes a lot of the gap already. :) For the best (real) Type R you can get in the UK, go for an imported FD2. :) Spoon shows that modifying an FN2 is not a total waste, it has potential (though modifying an FN2 is a waste of money!).
+TassieLorenzo. I have considered an Fn2 quite seriously in the past, but I just couldn't chop my then Ep3 for one. If a championship white one came up I maybe would have gone for it. In the end I went for a S2000 which is the best car I have ever driven in my life! It is a post 2006 model also so I can do the Hondata flashpro mod. The Fd2 will be in the next couple of years when a 2 seater is no longer practical. One thing is for sure though Honda only make Legendary cars!!
I like the look of these but I’m 6’3” and around 17.5 - 18 stone. Is it worth me even thinking about a test drive or is it going to be too small? Thanks for the review.
It's a fair bit late to reply, but for any others wondering on a similar question: My 6'4" friend had a go and had no issues, he's about 16-17st. The seats are good on both R and non R versions, if you have a wider frame. The doors are friggin' wide, even the 5dr have wide front doors, the steering wheel has full movement control, plunges in, pulls out and tilts up/down, so any accessibility issues can be worked around. Had my 1.8VTEC FN1 for over a month now and I love it, I'll get a Type R at some point for sure, but if mine is mechanically/structurally sound and worth investing in, I may just tune it lightly for shits.
Jamie you gotta review a supercharged or turbocharged one with suspension and brakes and all that lot. There is a lot of those around UK. Really transforms the car to a daily usable beast :) Hopefully im going to get mine supercharged with TWM 1320 in not so far future for around 350-400whp with stock bottom end to have a laught at the expense of some M3s, imprezas, evos and all your "fast" cars ;D
Like the way you review cars, subbing to see what else you do well! And it's probably been said a million times, but in some specs of the 8th gen R (I think just GT spec) you have Dual Climate control, so the passenger can be as warm or cold as they need. Source: I have a Type S GT that does it :)
Soon as I saw the shag bands on the gear gaitor I shouted NO then had to turn it off. What sort of weapon writes their car off visually by placing these there? kids these days eh...
a quick question. You say it's a perfect car if you require some specific criteria. But what if the car can be turboed? and not a honda? but still had the same ability to be a daily driver and a sporty car within the same price range?
A Lancer Evolution?... It's objectively better by numbers and for modifying :) . I like the CTR as it's so slow that you can use all of it's performance quite often (and it makes a nice noise when you do!), as opposed to "hardly ever" using more than a fraction of the performance in a faster car.
Well EK9 is a true homologation, stripped-down, seam-welded, "Type R" racing special. Whereas FN2 is really a more of a luxury Type S or Si ("GTI" style) which has Type R badges for marketing reasons, aside from a few trinkets from the Japanese market type r (the gearbox ratios (later model - LSD) & seats are identical to the Japanese Type R FD2, but otherwise the FN2 is more of a Type S).
thats alright bud i always aint to get back to everyone, sorry it took so long!! i would love to mate I'm always up for doing any affordable car as cars like that are what people can actually get there hands on :)
I'm getting a new car and I'm thinking of getting the FN2 Type R or the golf mk 5 GTI. They're totally different cars, I know. Could anyone give some opinions or thoughts on this? :)
+KBCAD BNCZH from owning a MK5 1.6 FSI for 2 years a couple of years back i would say the GTI but i am yet to jump in one (which i am itching to do) the FN2 is really cool but it would really do down to what you personally prefer, VW or Honda?
I've had a mk4 golf (1.6) and I own an FK2 civic (1.8) right now. But I'm looking for something that's a bit quicker :/ The lack of torque means that the FN2 will feel a lot slower than the GTI does, but I love the styling of the FN2R so much :( This is a tough one!
aaa mate that is a tough one, i would say the MK5 is a big jump up and was top gears car of the year when it came out haha! go test drive both would be the best thing mate, that would be the only way you would be able to pick which one is better
+KBCAD BNCZH I currently own an FN2R and bought it for a fun/practical daily driver. In my opinion Honda produced the FN2 with the Golf MK5 GTI in mind, and is their version of an "all-rounder" hot hatch, as opposed to a performance benchmark. It's also why some "Type R" purists aren't usually fans of the FN2 due to how it has lost its edge and rawness compared to previous iterations. That being said, the FN2R is still quite raw compared to the GTI and from my experience is more fun to drive. Pushed to their limits they both perform similarly (handling & straight line), however as the GTI has a turbo and more torque, it is much more forgiving. It isn't as easy to get the best out of the FN2, but as far as driving experience is concerned that makes it far more rewarding when you do get it right. The GTI is still fun to drive though, and is the better daily driver (in terms of more compliant ride and broader powerband). Looks are subjective so that is up to you, but obviously I think the FN2 is more interesting to look at (admittedly I'm biased lol). The GTI looks nice enough, but is almost bland in comparison, which some people will prefer, and is also more common down here. Best bet is to test drive both as Jamie_FYD mentioned. Hope this helped mate! :) For what it's worth I have quite a few friends who own Golf GTI's (MK5 & 6) and we've swapped cars on numerous occasions when going for a spirited drive.
thank you for making this been debating whether to buy an ep3 and get that smile my face or one of these.. i just can't shake off the nanny cars in these modern cars. I want something enjoyable to drive but this is beginning to show that the fn2r is too sanitised and lost its rawness.
I'll try to get me hands on one and test it out, have driven a ek1 auto so have the feel and low centre of gravity - but would love to own one with vtec and rawness. BTW thank you for replying so quickly I have a feeling if you continue chugging out these entertaining pieces on cars your youtube is bound to tip into the tens of thousands. I think it might be your personality good for talk show host :D
yeah man its always best to just jump into something like that to see whats what. no problem mate i always aim to answer people as soon as possible :) i really hope it takes off! :D
I think there real good looking but type r shut blow your pants off Wells your trousers are still. it seemed at the time they watered it down so it would rival the golf gti long cruiser rather than ep3 cocking leg on a one night stand. then fail UK emissions laws.
Hey dude, enjoyed the review and the camera work. You come across well, few rough edges here and there but overall pretty good. Bit of the west country accent adds a bit of character compared to the boring droll of some car reviewers. On a bad note and I hate to be this guy, but you do use "nice" too much. Other than that, you did a good job.
Interior is better. You get 6 gears in the Si. The steering is quicker. It is a little slower on track due to it's weight and cheaper rear suspension. It's still a lot better than Jeremy 'FORD' Clarkson would have you believe though.
pad coombes Exactly the same mate, I test drove one 2 years ago..but it left me kinda cold. Bought another ST instead, that 5 pot keeps pulling me back lol
It's not *that* bad, just don't expect it to be fast. It's still really engaging & smooth to drive, especially the LSD versions. I'd say the FN2 is *more* fun to drive around town and even in the mountains than a K-swapped EG. As the K-swapped EG is too capable (both straight line and cornering-wise) to be able to scratch the surface of the performance (besides the K-swap car would just spin up it's tyres near the redline). Whereas the FN2 you can feel the chassis moving around, and get -- safely -- much more towards its limits both handling and performance wise. :)

The LSD model is a lot better. :)
+TassieLorenzo it would make no difference with the sedentary speed I travel at ;).
+TassieLorenzo don't really need LSD for normal road use
I bought Type S the other day. Only got Type S because I do 300 miles per week to get to work and home :) but it's still quite punchy for 2.2 cdti engine.

2 days after I watched this video I bought a 59 plate fn2....never been happier with a car. Cheers Jamie💯
Nice review mate! The FN2 has dual climate control, so the temperature control on the armrest allows the passenger to determine their preference. Funnily enough it was one reason I got the car as I swear my g/f is cold-blooded haha. She often has the temp on her side 7 - 8 degrees above mine.
+Judo JoNny Yup exactly the same for my Type S, my side is usually about 19 then she usually has it on the highest haha

You hit the nail on the head with this review 👍 I’ve had both ep3 and fn2
Ive just bought one of these Type R's - Love it. Great potential mod wise too.
Adam Maclean don't mod it it's good the way it is
The fn2 is a car u have to live with..its a brilliant all round package
I'm new to ur channel and as I've got a Honda fn2 and my mate has the ep3 id see what your review was like on them .... I just think it would suit my current age of 32 better because of the daily usability but still having the K20 when I want some fun.
Am thinking about getting one as a daily/track car, it's a performance package in one, you have the K20 motor with racing seats and a tunable ECU
Needs AT VERY LEAST a fd2 oil pump to wake car up and the vtec.
Great review! glad someone else has noted the ecu issues with this car my last civic did exactly the same thing. Seems to be more common than I thought happened in my second year of owning it
+Joshua Forrest thanks man! yeah the owner went threw it with me when i jump in the car

Got the gt it's a nice car to just cruise around in and it's a go kart when you want some fun. Even my 83yo dad loves the seats.
The weight is the biggest problem. Too heavy. The ep3 punched above it's weight mostly because ot was light, not this.

Temperature button on the passenger side is for the passenger to regulate the temperature coming out the vents facing the passenger
I'm looking to buy an fn2, liking the look of the white champion edition.

I’m thinking about purchasing one but I’m still not sure got a decent budget of around 9000
Jack Rush - I’m also checking this model. In Sweden you can find fn2:s from 4500€

Never really liked FN2's, Much prefered the EP3 imo
Made my decision to get one after a painful 2/3 months of searching
I have the 1.8 vtec I'm definitely buying the TypeR next
Robbie_L_B - exactly the same situation here 😊
(I noticed your comment is a year old, so did you get the fn2 yet?)
Any update?
Excellent review and as a few below said, yep you should take over from that muppet Evans (although he's gone now I know....good work Jamie ; )
I love my fn2,having for a year now and it's awesome car,its my everyday car and really always put a smile on my face when I'm accelerating 😎

bought the fn2 coz it is a great everyday car. my Nissan zx twin turbo just is not an everyday car with fuel prices going through the roof and its 460bhp it's kept garaged every winter.

if only, that would be awesome!

English Expert Opinion Review summary:
"EZ QUITE NOIHCE"
@@lucjankalicki7224 yep I can't unsee it now lol
Jamie you gotta review a supercharged or turbocharged one with suspension and brakes and all that lot. There is a lot of those around UK. Really transforms the car to a daily usable beast :) Hopefully im going to get mine supercharged with TWM 1320 in not so far future for around 350-400whp with stock bottom end to have a laught at the expense of some M3s, imprezas, evos and all your "fast" cars ;D
Couldnt you just get an ecu off a scraper?
Like the way you review cars, subbing to see what else you do well!
And it's probably been said a million times, but in some specs of the 8th gen R (I think just GT spec) you have Dual Climate control, so the passenger can be as warm or cold as they need. Source: I have a Type S GT that does it :)
I don't think the "launch control" in first gear is standard, I don't have one in mine atleast
Completely agree, when I test drove one I was disappointed by the lack of sensation when Vtec came in.
Soon as I saw the shag bands on the gear gaitor I shouted NO then had to turn it off. What sort of weapon writes their car off visually by placing these there? kids these days eh...
I'm looking to buy a type r, but I have 2 kids under 3, do you find it a pain getting yours in and out as I can see you have child seats in yours?
Fn2 type r, 53k miles or 6spd manual supra twin turbo 95k km, or save for a few more months and get a blue 2006 m6?
what were u saying about the ecu failure???
I got an abarth 595 but I also love the type R. Do you think it would worth the change?
The FN2 Type-R will feel sluggish compared to your 595, if you're willing to spend some money on it though it'll be good.
My mates got 270 hp in his 596 abarth
a quick question. You say it's a perfect car if you require some specific criteria. But what if the car can be turboed? and not a honda? but still had the same ability to be a daily driver and a sporty car within the same price range?
A Lancer Evolution?... It's objectively better by numbers and for modifying :) . I like the CTR as it's so slow that you can use all of it's performance quite often (and it makes a nice noise when you do!), as opposed to "hardly ever" using more than a fraction of the performance in a faster car.
the video is incorrect the fn2 was also made in the UK.
Hi, Jamie_FYD is the huge different between EK9 and FN2 if we're talking about driving experience?
Well EK9 is a true homologation, stripped-down, seam-welded, "Type R" racing special. Whereas FN2 is really a more of a luxury Type S or Si ("GTI" style) which has Type R badges for marketing reasons, aside from a few trinkets from the Japanese market type r (the gearbox ratios (later model - LSD) & seats are identical to the Japanese Type R FD2, but otherwise the FN2 is more of a Type S).
love this video, nothing about mpg and that kind of bullshit, just an honest car guys opinion on a nice car, think.imma get myself an fn2 now haha
yup I like Clarkson but he wee bit off on this get a lot more bang for your buck ive had mine 3 years and change front springs that's it
very good review =) you just earned a sub.
+jimvest thanks man! :)
Great car love the fn2
Great, so next car will be fn2 typer for a daily

haha no probs man, if I'm ever over your way ill give you a shout :)
5:48 beast 😳😀
I was jn your position, and chose a 30th Anniversary Edition MK5 Golf GTI, which I had for 3 years. Fantastic car
im thinking of selling my ep3 R and getting an fn2 R, i dont no what to do?
just done it, the fn2 is sooooo much better and ep3 is still good
This or the astra vxr??? overall rating?
+Majid Hussain id have to say the VXR man, alot more fun
Vxr is a lot of fun!i own a audi s3 and like my fast cars..would defo recommend the vxr
The gearbox will break, absolutely terrible gearbox, same problem in the corsa VXR
Which one? The new shape or old one? :)
@@Desolation_Dave what gear box? Fn2 or vxr
Car No29 in 28 years of driving - my 2nd FN2 Type R :)
thank you for making this been debating whether to buy an ep3 and get that smile my face or one of these.. i just can't shake off the nanny cars in these modern cars. I want something enjoyable to drive but this is beginning to show that the fn2r is too sanitised and lost its rawness.
+Mikkadyu yeah man i mean of cause it all down to how you feel driving the car and how you enjoy it but i do feel the EP3 is just more fun
Go for one with a LSD mate - be it DC2, DC5 or late version FN2. It's way better and essential for a FWD car IMO. :)
I think there real good looking but type r shut blow your pants off Wells your trousers are still. it seemed at the time they watered it down so it would rival the golf gti long cruiser rather than ep3 cocking leg on a one night stand. then fail UK emissions laws.
I like your videos but you gotta use more adjectives other than 'nice'
Nice video though ;)
When vteck kicks in yo!
+Scriptman thanks man, always here to show case the cars good points and why people own them more than anything
West Country? Lol. Dude, he's from the Isle of Wight
Interior is better. You get 6 gears in the Si. The steering is quicker.
It is a little slower on track due to it's weight and cheaper rear suspension.
It's still a lot better than Jeremy 'FORD' Clarkson would have you believe though.
test drove one these give me a focus st anytime
pad coombes Exactly the same mate, I test drove one 2 years ago..but it left me kinda cold. Bought another ST instead, that 5 pot keeps pulling me back lol
You never see people driving these fast which is probably quite telling
they are not in the hands of little gay kids yet thats why ;)
AlphaMuscle gets it.
The people who own these do drive them fast, just only when there's no one else around.
Haha fair enough, 'yet' being the main word from Alpha Muscle.
S Miller Give it a few years and you'll definitely see these being driven by idiots who drive too fast.
David Alexander Thinking about it maybe not though, these never were the last word in fast or fun so they might ignore this generation of Honda
This car is great..
Is it noiiice?
I agree top gear need to recruit you
The mugen Beats them all
ep3 all the way ......theres no way i would swap my ep3 for a fn2
cheers!
It's nice
id take this over ep3 anyday don't care what yall niggas say.
civic type r , 2003 is better, a classic car
Absolutely horrible car no idea why anyone would buy one
This is the shit Type R.... :/
Much prefer an EP3
I think there real good looking but type r shut blow your pants off Wells your trousers are still. it seemed at the time they watered it down so it would rival the golf gti long cruiser rather than ep3 cocking leg on a one night stand. then fail UK emissions laws.
