@@dennisjr77 As good or better than Jason Kidd: Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Walt Frazier, Lenny Wilkins, Nate Archibald, Dennis Johnson, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Fat Lever, John Stockton, Mark Price, Kevin Johnson, Derrick Harper, Terry Porter, Ron Harper, Mookie Blaylock, Rod Strickland, Tim Hardaway, Gary Payton, Penny Hardaway, Steve Nash, Chris Paul.
Kidd had greater longevity and was a smarter player in his late years than the vast majority of these players. But there was never a point at which he was definitively better. Almost all the guys I listed were significantly faster and better scorers. Many were better perimeter defenders. Kidd had the strength and know-how to play decent post-up defense and cut off passes. He was better at poking the ball away and stripping it closer to the hoop. But he had a turnover problem and an inconsistent (being kind) shot. He did get better at 3s and FTs later in his career, but even then he wasn't reliably consistent, and his percentages generally dropped off in the postseason.
I like Kidd, but he never had the touch with his shot. And what he did well didn't outweigh his weaknesses enough to elevate him to top 5 or even top 10 status imo.

@@merlball8520 this really depends on what your team needs. If you have ample scoring options including a mix of slashers (kmart, rj) and 3pt shooters (kittles, van horn, lucious harris) kidd is the best, and can lead those specialists to the finals. He's the best passing and rebounding point guard ever, and an above average defender. However, his own offense was definitely a liability on teams where he needed to score.
People forget that when the Nets and Kidd lost most of those scoring options (except RJ) they were way sub .500 until they traded for Vince Carter who dragged them to the playoffs in 04-05 with a 57 game stretch of 28 6 and 5 .505 effective fg% nearly mvp caliber play. Kidd is the best pg ever if you have scoring on the team. He only ever scored enough to keep defenders honest for his passing.

    • @imwithyou38
      @imwithyou38 Год назад +2

the fact that jason kidd with the rosters he was given was able to bear teams with way more skill, he some how beat the pistons and lose to the pistons in the conf finals 4-3 which the pistons roster was so fucking stacked. he lost to the lakers 4-0 in the finals but 3 games together were decided by 10 points against the lakers which is wild to think about. 3 nore shots made in 2 games would have made it a 2-2 finals. 2 best players in the league vs kidd and a bunch of decent players, on paper the lakers should have dominated the games by 10-15 points a game.

Jason's high school coach, who had coached at the college level for several years, told me when Jason was a junior in H.S. that he was "the best player I've ever coached, any level." And when he was a senior, I watched him seemingly coast against a good team through a stat-line like this: 25-8-13. As Grant said, he was one of those guys who was always electrifying to watch, but what amazed me most was how much stamina he had (and how hard he played all the time). In an interview he once said that he didn't know what motivated him to play so hard; it was a mystery even to him.

I started watching the NBA through the 01-02 All Star game, and this guy who was seemingly threading the needle while not even looking in the direction of the player he was passing to, just blew my mind. Jason Kidd became my favourite player from that day forward.
Being from outside of the US, I was extremely lucky to watch him play a regular season game at London in the O2 in his last season with the Knicks. He was obviously a lot slower than in his prime, but to actually watch the guy live, you realise how much he was constantly communicating with his teammates, and how much he was assessing the court all the time! Absolute legend!

One of the most underrated superstars ever. I saw people not taking Jason Kidd in Top 50 lists ? Are you crazy ? 3 Finals 1 ring, 2nd Most Asists, 2nd most steals, Top 10 3pt shoot made, top 6 most triple double top 50 most double double, 10 all-stars, many all-nba and all-defensives, 2 times top 5 in MVP voting ?!
And probably the purest distributor we ever saw. And best defensive player among all Point Gods (Magic, Stockton, Isıah, Curry, Paul ) , and the most versatile among all Point Guards except Magic Johnson who has PF body.
He was franchise Player on 3 different team on different eras. For mid 90s for Dallas, for late 90s to early 00s for Suns and for early 00s to late 00s for Nets ... He aint a joke. And he was a difference maker for 2011 Mavericks.

@@gangstagummybear3432 just saying 3pt shooting is not a reason to talk up Kidd. A lot of other things are tho. Just putting the arguments in order.
Kidd shot a lot of threes because he had a long career with big minutes virtually every season, not because he shot many per game, or per minute.
His big mins were because he impacted the game in a lot of other ways. Basketball Genius.

This dude made even Nenad Krstic average around 20 pts per game for a good while... I'm pretty sure even I could score at least a couple of pts with him.

I remember when J Kidd was the truth i think if the mavericks kept him in the beginning they would of gotten a ring before Dirk came to the mavs

People just don't understand it's your ability to make the other 4 people on the court better. Point guards are the catalyst that make or breaks a teams success. You can easily make an average team great with shhhhh! passing!!🙂

Perfect PG IMO. Great height, strong, vision became a better shooter than Magic, rebounds, decent defense, captain. Pass first, shoot second.

Decent defense is quite the understatement.
9x All NBA Defense, and was always among the league leaders in steals throughout his entire career. He was big and could guard multiple positions, even giving LeBron fits in the ‘11 NBA Finals.
