I once owned a white 1962 Ford Thunderbird 2-door hardtop coupe with a 390 Special V-8, with a Holley 4-barrel. With baby blue leather seats, power seats, power windows, and power door locks. What sweet ride she was.
Love it. I Bought a nice 60 t-bird in 1972 for 50 bucks, no one wanted them then, just wanted it for the drive train how times have changed. Those old birds just get better.
Holy smokes! Look at the room to access the bellhousing bolts. And a front mounted distributor to boot. If you are a good mechanic you get this car in heaven.
Wow, my daily driver for 10 years and running is a 390 T85 OD 59 bird, FPT long tube headers, front disk brakes and rear sway bar. Last of the easy to rebuild and maintain luxury cruisers and one of the safest cars ever built. Manual trans square birds very rare. Glad no others like square birds so I can afford them. Watch Kristensen 59 thunderbird at goodwood. Planet pulling 430 stomping flock of euro chickens is hilarious.
My first little league baseball coach had a black T-bird like this beauty. He'd take as many of the team that could fit to get burgers after we won.Skeeter.😊
A cousin’s boyfriend had a frogeye back in the ‘60s. I remember loading up everybody that could fit and flying down backroads in Oklahoma to get ice cream in town. Fond memories!
We put 427 ford from Holman and Moody in a 23foot Formula offshore boat. It would do 55mph in the Gulf of Mexico. Fantastic engine Thanks for your podcasts
I lived out in Abilene, Texas back in the early-mid 1970's. Lots of big and big- blocked older fords still on the street and sitting around. Easy to go to the local wrecking yard and pluck a big block high-horsepower engine for a few hundred dollars and put it in whatever you wanted. Mostly for fun, few were show queens and over the top costly builds. My buddys dad had a 1969 T-Bird with the factory 429, powerful and quite a highway cruiser.
I had a 69 T-Bird that had a 429 in it. It was a really nice ride. I might try to get another one someday just to relive some of those great days of being a T-Bird owner.
Perfect choice for that boat.We owned a ‘60 vert with a 430” Lincoln engine, and it flew pretty good.As far as the exhaust headers,I had a similar circumstance accommodating a ‘70 RA/IV in a ‘64 GTO.With the cast iron headers off,it dropped right in,but with a 3” setback to the firewall, and no way to get four tubes down in the rear location. What a headache. That T-Bird is definitely a showpiece.
I own a 62 G.P. Tri-Power 4spd, I Love the Aluminum Cat! And as a former Technician, the V8 Mazdarati is SuperCool and I've worked on a few, and they're really solid, if done right.👍👍
Also a spad what I think is a 6 2 Pontiac. It's definitely a Pontiac but I'm thinking it's a '62 Catalina or Grand Prix. Saw that up there on the rack over there near the corner of the shop. Again very very cool. Those cars are just very long on style. They have so much style. They're just dripping with style but they've got a 421 or even a 389. They're just drunk with torque. What a wonderful combination
So, it's a 59 T-bird that was originally an FE motored car , probably a 332 but maybe a 352 motor. Both the 332 and the latter 427 are FE blocks and share the same mountings so any mid block would bolt right in that car. It was definitely not original to the car as they are 5 years apart. My step dad had a 58 with the 332 in it, super cool cars.
Was that a 64 GTO I saw there real quick does that have the old eight lug rims? I commented before you guys got to it. It’s a 62 with a 421 SD beautiful car. I’ve only seen one before and it’s in show condition and the guy does drive it once in a blue moon.
Very nice cars. Very nice collection. However that Thunderbird that is very old school sleeper. I mean it's cruising around exhaust going through the full exhaust system. Nice kind of quiet compliant cruise down the road. You pull up to a red light and there's some jack wagon with his Coyote. Engined mustang and he's sitting there revving it up a little bit and you just look over it. Glance over at him and right before the light shortly before the light turns green you open up the electric cutouts and that lets him know that that's unbeard is way more than what it looks and he's got definitely got a race on his hands
Cutting away that rad support didn’t do much for the overall rigidity of a unibody convertible. Did you have to put some cross car lateral braces to keep the LS motor from trying to jump out of the engine compartment?
I wonder if the Ford-O-Matic will survive in the T Bird. I also like the statement about the V8 Mazda which translated to "dont get on it, unless you want the six speed gears to make hamburger out of your legs". Snazzy looking though.
They must have built more cammers than i thought its supposed to be the unobtainable holy grail of motors but there's a few getting around. Legendary engine.
It kills me every time I see a SOHC that is a “display engine“. at least put it in something buildable and beautiful like a 65 or 67 Thunderbird. With side pipes and a big ass set of torque thrusts. I’d love to see him do a documentary on Ram Air V. That would be a good one.
The T-bird looks like it was delivered that way. The MX-5 would look 'factory' if the mods to firewall and radiator support were rolled and smoothed. The Mazda's real appeal is OEM parts for reliability, and no external signs of what's under it.
Can you imagine if modern engineering was brought to bear, say variable cams, efi, a huge CPU to run the motor, this thing because how it breathes in NA configuration I’d have to think it could lay down maybe 800+ WHP
Well…thanks… One wonders :IF Thunderbird , had went Performances in early years (e.g. Handling, motors,HDUTY ,ETC.)…….??? that's got to be the coolest engine swap i've seen in years. so glad it's not some "resto-mod" too. perfect.
It's so well done. The motor looks like it grew in the engine bay
@@JamesWeaver-n4t Ford should have produced this combo....

I've always imagined how much the the handling would have been improved if Ford had moved the engine mounts back a few inches.

I also want the Monster Miata.

Had a buddy back in Texas who had a Square Bird with a sunroof and a 430 in it... That car would SCREAM.

Now that's a Sleeper ,nice Thunderbird
A friend of mine and I built a 1960 Chevy Belair 2 door, pea soup green. We put a 425 (or more) HP dual quad 409 in it. That was a sleeper!
I’ve driven past your shop many times and can see that you are doing quality work from afar, but to get inside and have a tour is fantastic.
Awesome cars I love all vintage cars
Great collection! They are All my favorites, the Pontiacs and the T-Bird brought back memories of the Good Ole Days..

Got to love it..I own a 63 impala SS with the duel quad 4 speed 409…when I was 17…scary fun…
Lovin the fan shroud too.
The only engine I would put in this car would be a prepped 351 Cleveland, Jerico 4speed trans, 3:23:1 9" rear & a Hotchkis suspension.
I love those Clevelands I had one here in Australia in my ute had dual lpg/petrol and she had some get up and go.

LOVE that Cammer in
The Thunderbird!!
The 62 Catalina is
FLAWLESS!!😎 so cool…
Serious engine that 427 ford; Factory ratings were 615 hp @ 7000 rpm with a single 4-barrel, and 657 hp @ 7500 with dual carburetors.
No way.

The thunderbird swap is cool but you could fit a v12 with room to spare up front, now that little MX5 swap is impressive, jmo

I new a fella had two ford's with the cammers in them. Jim Dove he made the engines. One was a 56 T Bird the other 64 fairlane.
Don Miller (President of Penske racing) had a 1960 Thunderbird with factory 3 speed on the column.
I miss being able to see everything, and be able to get to everything in the engine compartment.
Certainly put the Thunder in that Bird !
With some sway bars and brakes, the T-bird would be really fun.
If you can afford a Holman Moody cammer. Pretty sure you can find a few$$ for better brakes
Yep, go like hell and stop like nil. Bad combo, but at least they're watching for that when driving it.
He says it’s basically an engine display for car shows.
It bolts right in because that engine has the FE block and the 352 in the Thunderbird is an FE engine.
Listen to the solid lifters!
No lifters. The valve train is is all under the valve cover hence "overhead cam" It does have a massive timing chain going up to the heads.

The Mazda is the ultimate sleeper.
I searched all over for one of the 340 motors for a skyliner restoration
That’s an amazing setup!❤❤❤❤
Very cool 🤙 I just picked up a 59 convertible galaxie and I'm looking for something like this for the drive train
Stacey David placed a Ford 347 stroker in a first generation Mazda Miata. That car is a road course racing Corvette eater.
Love that 🎉I would like that in my 92 E150 Custom
Where were you guys when I was seriously looking for a shop to put an LS motor in my 2003 Mitsubishi eclipse?
How much of the ohc v8 heads come from a production sohc 4 cylinder?
Love it!! Joe
The three best looking engines ever, imho, was the 427 SOHC, the 429 Semi-Hemi and the 426 MOPAR HEMI. Close third is the early MOPAR HEMI's.

Wouldn't it have been nice to get one of these back in the day?
it be be nice to get in one today!!
One thing I know about those early T-Birds is there's very limited room for exhausts.....
So I'd love to get a look at your fabricated headers.
....but why does the monster motor in the T-bird sound lile a bag of spanners?
I vote for upgrading the car and use it, not just show it
I will gladly race you any time any day! As long as it's understood that you will let me win!

I might still have a 427 side oiler still in storage along with a Pontiac 421 what can I say? I’m gonna old man like yourself.
Put some good period brakes( aluminum drums) dual master cylinders and whip some bootie and slopar butt in stock class
