Funny that you guy's mentioned gaming magazines at the grocery store. Back in the NES era when my mom said she was going grocery shopping I was ready with a notepad and a pen. As soon as we went into the store I knew it would take my mom about 20 minutes to get to the aisle I was at and I would write down all the cheat codes I could from Tips & Tricks magazine. Great times. Awesome video guy's can't wait for the next round of Launch title madness.
Wish I would’ve thought of that. I usually just tried to remember the code and write it down once I got home. Worked about 40% of the time. 😄
This was me. After a few years I finally took a card from Nintendo power and got a subscription.
Were I grew up they kept the magazines and comics that weren't in plastic behind the counter and you couldn't touch it till you bought it, you guys were lucky
Sometimes I just tore the page I wanted out the magazine.
I got banned from Walden Books doing that.
I really miss those inserts for genesis games that would be a poster on one side and show one shot previews of about 20 games on the other. Got so excited for those
The lack of game manuals, mandatory patches are a HUGE factor for me why I don't do physical games anymore. There's no flare anymore in game packaging too. The cover has the lead character looking pissed or angry right in the center of the box with a gun. There's hardly any creativity on game box arts anymore.
I also miss gaming magazines. Unfortunately the internet changed print media on. I go on retro mags and download high quality scans of magazines to reminisce... Those were the days.
Demo discs are def cool! Even CD ROMS with game previews were awesome. Nowadays a demo comes out it's some timed BS like the RE Village demos where a demo is playable until Crapcom says you can't play it anymore.
You are spot on. Things have gotten stale and redundant man. Packaging for sure but even into the games as well. We still play some modern stuff but it's nowhere near the connection to the good ol' days. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

Games captivated your imagination with a sense of mysteriousness, dress with the box short that they decided to go with which was so truly unique during that time.. 90’s to early 2000’s were the best!
You guys nailed pretty much everything. Bringing up the magazines and the schoolyard rumors - we'll never have that again now that we're older and all the information and leaks are available almost immediately.
Would be kind of interesting to go to the office water cooler and be like _"Hey guys, I heard about this glitch in Grand Theft Auto...!"_
All those reasons are why I mainly stick to retro games. If I do play something recent, it's modern retro games. No online for me, thank you!
Being an older gamer I really enjoyed this topic but it really makes me dread the all digital future. I really appreciate what Blaze is doing with the Evercade carts,manuals & cases got a love it. Also a nod out to Switch Player Magazine which is Monthly print.
Yeah but on the flip side of that, the digital revolution has allow so many of us to actually play retro games which we would otherwise have to skip our mortgage payment for the month. And so many retro game collectors I see end up using Everdrives because they are just so much more convenient, even though they have the physical game in the next room.

Hollywood Video was always crammed with folks every Friday those were great times... The energy was almost like being in the lobby of a theater for me as kid.

Speaking as a retro gamer, I can honestly say it is a lot more convenient to play older games now than it was 20 to 30 years ago. I own a switch and a lot of classics are available through the online service or in compilation games. And if you want an older game that isn't available through normal means, emulation is a thing. Also these games come with save states so you can save at any time unlike most games back in the day. Also no more looking through several magazines for a cheat code of your favorite game. It takes literally a 5 second google search to get all the information you need. No more blowing into your NES cartridge and trying to slant the game at an angle to get it to work. I'm re-living my childhood minus the headache and hassle.
I just cherish the memories of gaming with my family back in the day. My cousins always had like the newest games from whatever console was out at the time. Either Playing an amazing port of Donkey Kong jr on the Colecovision or playing games on the Amiga500 was a real experience. I miss watching saturday morning cartoons like Dragon Quest and Captain N. Great times👾
We had a gaming tournament in our house called TTOC (Tetris Tournament of Champions). Every Friday night we would put Tetris in the NES and see who could get the highest score. My parents weren’t big fans of gaming in general and this is one of my most cherished childhood memories because they got into it also and always looked forward to it.

Going from a Mega Drive (Genesis) to a PS1 with Resident Evil and Toshinden… kind of hard to get that kind of jump today.

I think the difficulty of a game can depend on your age and skills. I played Gradius 3 on SNES as a kid, and made it far into the game but didn't beat it. Years later as an adult, I started playing it again, and beat it in a few days.
Another lost is the awesomeness of playing a game at the arcade,
Then that game coming home as a console port. A lot were rough. But the ones that were good were glorious.
TMNT: Turtles in Time on SNES was truly mind-blowing! 😎
Arcade games were awesome because they looked and sounded much better than home consoles at the time, and the staggering amount of quarters I popped into them came from "Mom, I need more money for the change machine!" rather than from my own blood, sweat and tears. lol

I remember being blown away by the graphical leap from PS1 to PS2, I wholly agree with you, I don’t think we’ll experience that level of jump again. I remember being astounded at the graphics on Pro Evolution Soccer and WWF Smackdown Just Bring It on PS2. And on MGS2 - the level of detail was incredible. You can see the improvement from PS3 to PS4 but it took years to see that.
For sure. To me that leap was the one that sticks out to me the most. At the time it was hard to imagine how it could get any better. It was a really fun time to be a gamer. Still play the hell out of the PS2 by the way!

One of the biggest rumors I chased were the Mortal Kombat Reptile/ Noob Saibot/ Toasties saga. All the little hidden hints in the game led to so much wild shit being speculated by kids at school, and I was one of em. Lol
I have never known really how to explain it, but things just felt quieter back then. Maybe it was being a younger age and being a kid that made things feel like we were in a simpler time.
You were really only around your friends in the same room, you didn't have online play, you didn't have the internet, cell phones, or anything like that. You played the same game or two for hours, days, weeks, months on end. That is all most of us could get for a multitude of reasons.
If you wanted to go get something, you had to ask to be driven somewhere and maybe be granted 8 or 9 bucks to rent a game, whatever game. Then you went back home and played it as much as you could.
Everything was not at your fngertips. You wanted to listen to music while playing a game, you turn on the radio. You wanted to have a video or something on TV, while playing, you were pretty much SOL, as many of us were fortunate to have just 1 TV, let alone more than one. But if you did, you just went to whatever channel you could, let it on, let commercials play through, or play a VHS tape if you had any and a VCR.
Things felt "cozier" I guess, being surrounded by the games and whatever you had in your childhood or just waking up next to friends the next morning after you stayed up late playing games and woke up to ppay more again with them until you had to be picked up to go home.
From my experience, I did not have that at home. It was having those experiences at my friend's homes and hanging out and playing. My family could not afford game consoles. I got an NES, my 1st console, for $30 bucks, 13 years after its initial release. I treasured that. I was so excited to play on a little 12 or 13 inch black and white TV that was on its best leg and when I was able to get a very cheap color TV at a thrift store the next year, it was unbelievable.
There just is no good way to describe it. Everything that we know now and what we have experienced since then, only really makes sense to those of us of what it really felt like growing up in that time, while others that didn't cannot fathom how we did it and even some of us wonder that now too based on what is at our disposable. But I still miss and cherish those times. Sorry for my novel. Guess I just had a lot to say and probably even more that didnt get put on here. Cheers

I totally feel everything you are saying. I was born in 92, but my first console was a NES too. My parents said they wouldn't spend what a PS1 cost unless they knew I would actually play games and enjoy them first, so I had to prove it with starting out with a yardsale special NES and a 13 or 15 in tv.8 I'm so glad though, I think it really made me appreciate a good game for what it is and not being judgemental about graphics like so many people do now a days. I would get a couple games for Christmas and a game for my birthday, so I always remember reading up on the game magazines and even renting so that I'd be sure to ask for a good game and not a total dud. I didnt have a cell phone til I was 13 and started to play sports in middle school, I think our generation has to have lived in one of the wildest shifts of time in modern history experiencing pre and post cell phones/internet/9-11/ect. It was two completely different worlds and I would go back anyday.
Epic comment dude. I really feel like we aren't meant to be as stimulated as we are now. I think that is the root of your comment. Everything happens a much faster frequency. We'd get the news at 10pm or in the Sunday paper. Now our phones smack us with it 24/7. The exponential growth of tech has outpaced our ability to process it and the information it brings. Some good things have come with this for sure but a lot of bad too. I think it has caused a lot of phycological distain for many and most don't even realize the cause. The jump from PS1 GTA to PS2 GTA was the biggest ever I think. It realy blew my mind back then that this is possible now. Another one was the jump from SNES Star Wars Games to the Game Cube ones...

Great video guys! I was born in 1997 so the earliest stuff I remember was the PS2/Xbox era and I gotta say, I loved everything about it. The physical releases felt like a huge deal at the time, and that just isn't something we get to experience as often, if ever. It's truly a product of the time we live in, and it's sad for me, but at least I got to experience it first hand for a short period of time. Great video guys! I’m so happy to have grown up in the 80’s and 90’s and experienced gaming evolve. Absolutely loved going to the mall and picking up gaming magazines each month. To this day I still have most of them. Also loved being involved in creating video game fanzines and receiving fanzines in the mail from other people. RUclips is amazing but there’s nothing like seeing a new fanzine get delivered to your mailbox.
I remember when Soul Caliber came out on the DC and Tekken Tag on the PS2, a 700Mb no less. They blew away the Arcade versions. Just insane. One of the main reasons for the death of the arcades.
Dude both epic fighting games. We've spent A LOT of time with both due to our "Launch Title Madness" series. Both games are epic. We're down to the "Elite 8" and Tekken Tag on PS2 is still alive :). BTW, not sure where you are located but in our little midwest life of Des Moines, IA we have multiple arcades that are thriving. Barcade types but tons of epic retro machines. I think arcades killed itself by not evolving.
Cabinets should have went to minimal designs plastic huge lcd screens … memory card slots
And used home system for their internals.
U could have brought your controllers or arcade sticks with you.

I remember walking into Toys R Us and seeing the Mario 64 kiosk and playing the first area. I will never recreate the 🤯 that I experienced in that moment.
Hell ya! The vibe of Toys R Us back then was epic. I remember feeling like it was heaven on earth. My brother and I could spend hours in there and not buy anything. Good times. Cheers!

a lot of ppl dont realize how important the old manuals are to get through games. Examples, blaster master ( map in the manual) zelda 2 ( tells u what all items do ) Etc etc

I wholeheartedly agree with almost every point you made. I miss inserts and manuals and feel disappointed when I open a new game and get just disc or cart. PS4 Fire Pro World did have a great manual though. Love your videos.

I remember being disappointed that Metal Gear on the PS3 just had a black and white manual. That was when I saw the start of manuals losing their charm or disappearing altogether. A game that epic with all its build up and hype just to launch with a b&w manual.
Edit: thank goodness for a lot of Limited Run released games and their full color manuals! 👍👍
The playground rumor that comes to mind for me is Nude Mode in the original Tomb Raider. I had a friend say that his cousin unlocked it and then another kid said his brother did it too.

Damn, my school library did not have Game Pro magazine. They didn't even bother to get books released within the last 20 years. It was truly terrible.

The market is definitely saturated.
The so called excellent games are still mediocre shallow affairs with just super graphics engines.i missed when games tried to give you a sense of realism in the gameplay and not the just the graphics .

Good vid. Lots of good points. being an older gamer, started playing on a 2600, your last comment hits home. Each generations graphical improvements were mind-blowing for sure. Made you want the next gen consoles. For me it was going from a genesis to a PS1. playing Tomb Raider and RE was so satisfying and jaw dropping back in the day. Yes the controls for both games took some getting used to, but exploring new areas in TR and the Mansion in RE have only been equally once since for me, the original Bioshock.

I was a huge sports gamer and the death of nfl2k and mvp basbeall and other sports sims and the lack of sports games just broke me away from the passtime.
I hates fps still do and gaming seems its all fps and these modern pc style rpg’s and indie games.
Im completely out. Even street fighter the one game that was an extention of my right hand is mot for me at all.. it should have used guilty gear graphics engine
This Video brought back some memories. I definitely miss the demo discs. But this is why The Nintendo Switch is my favorite system of all-time. It is Filled with retro experiences on Physical Cartridges and most of all? Tons and Tons of Couch co-op games. I play it more than any system I own.
The Switch adds a ton of value for sure. Not our most played but most collected for in the current gen definitely. Cheers!
One other side of gaming we will never get back, The Arcades! Wow do I miss throwing my quarters up on the screen to save my place in line for Street Fighter 2 or Tekken. Sadly those are times that will never come again.
Fortunately we still have some good ones in our area. We have a barcade that has tons and tons of retro machines. It's heaven on earth dude. If you are ever in Des Moines, KC, Milwaukee or Minneapolis look for a place called the "Up Down." You'll love it. Cheers!

February 2003 (maybe 04).
Double B day party for Ryan & I. We stay up all night playing Socom via LAN. Wes & Dan in one room vs Me & Krider in a separate room. At 7AM the next morning, I was crowned the victory by Steve as the only one still awake, surrounded by 12 empty Mountain Dew cans & Ryan & I had to be at work at 8.... Literally the best gaming moment of my life.
Dude! That one and a few others we've had will forever be burned in my head. The others being the Madden tourney at your house in High School & Socom at your first apartment. Honorable mention......Gears of War in college listening to "Mad World" on a loop :). Good times brotha!

Gamecube also had some cool demo discs as well. Things I miss include the Toys R Us experience of buying video games. Games having cheat codes and passwords to unlock stuff like infinite ammo or cool weapons (this is sometimes now replaced by paid dlc). The full game being physical on the cart or disc. Light gun games (most only work on CRT screens). Nintendo players choice titles at $20 or less; as a kid this is how my family afforded most SNES and N64 games.
We definitely should have added "Light Gun Games" to this list. I'm not sure how the hell we forgot that as we've done tons of Light Gun videos. Damn it :). Thanks for watching and cheers to being a fellow Packer fan!

I found some of my old Xbox magazine demo disks a couple years back....and that's all it took. Now I'm actively collecting demo disc's for all the consoles. Especially ones I didn't use to have but now do. Love it
You guys hit it on the money. I miss those days of wwe no mercy nights and just having fun with friends over. Last time I was with all my childhood friends was over 20 years ago we had a halo lan party and played halo all night till the morning. I remember in the 90s definitely buying egm and gamepro a lot and just looking at the pics of new games and the artwork these magazine companies put in to show you how awesome it will be and to hype you up. Dude, probably before you guys’ time but the even better thing than manuals were the cloth maps in old PC RPGs! Speaking of graphics, I remember being blown away by MGS2 and the rain drops on the camera at the start of the game. Then being skeptical about the Dreamcast until I saw Ready 2 Rumble Boxing on the Hollywood Video demo console and I was sold.

I remember being told that on MarioKart 64 if you drove up to the castle on Mario Speedway (I think that was the track) that you could get into the castle and unlock an extra track. I remember being in the room with 3 mates and trying to do that in so many different stupid ways and we wasted so much time doing that but still having so much fun because you was all there in the room doing it together.
Here in England I remember getting Commodore 64 magazines to get get the demos on cassettes but that was back in the late 80's. But I went to my dad's yesterday to clear out his spare room and found a load of ps1 demo disks so I had no choice but to play a load of first levels last night. Which has reminded me of some games I need to get for my ps1.
And that feeling of excitement you got when you walked into that rental store on a Friday night and you had that choice of games you could get for the weekend or even hire a console as well and I remember me and my mates booked the n64 with 4 controllers (mind-blowing) and playing waverace all though the night and following playing that we all went out and bought one that being slightly disappointed with the very limited range of games.

I completely agree about the lack of challenge, in fact I say the lack of "street credit" like you guys called it gave rise to the Speedrunning community, if absolutely everyone can finish any game how do we know who's the best? Speedrunning is the answer
I remember that rumor about the Ultimate Warrior lasting a long time. When he made an appearance in the early 2000s, some of my friends were still claiming there was more than one. Or maybe late 90s. Somewhere around there.

Thanks a ton! We definitely thought about it but in our area at least arcades are still alive and well. We have a badass barcade (mostly retro) and a few others geared towards the family etc. So......all that said we felt like it was till somewhat hanging on. But we do love us some arcades for sure and always have. Cheers!

I was in the grocery yesterday walking past the miniscule magazine rack and was just remembering how it used to be one of my favorite sections of a grocery store so I could go through all the gaming mags. You guys nailed EVERYTHING that modern gamers are missing out or never got to or ever will experience. As a Local H fan, I love seeing you guys rep the band in all these videos, hahahahahaha
You guys hit the nail on the head on how we won't experience the massive graphical increases like we did back then. Going from playing SNES games to N64 games absolutely blew my mind. Then just a few years later going from N64 and PS1 games to PS2 and GameCube games, another huge* increase. In my opinion the only place seeing massive gains like we saw back then is VR, it's increasing pretty rapidly for the moment
I have a ton of memories sitting around playing Super Street Fighter 2 with my friends. I also miss the magazines! I had a subscription to GamePro magazine for quite a few years. Like an idiot I threw them all away when I was in high school. I would love to buy them back, but they aren't cheap. Too bad.

Im 39, i played my first video game in 1983, it was Pitfall and the Atari 2600, my infant brain had no idea what i was doing but i new it was something i would do the rest of my life. And from then on i never stopped playing video games and im so glad i grew up alongside gaming and got to experience each generation as it happened and all the cool stuff like yall mentioned. Modern gaming really is missing the specialness that we had back then. Imagine kids today whos only gaming memories are Digital, always online, Microtransactions, DLC, and websites. Yuck!

Gen X and Gen Z people hate to hear this but there’s really nothing that can compare to growing up in the 90s early 00s era. Everything just felt better, food, tv, video games, movies, toys, clothes. This is sort of off topic but I was 9 years old at the time and I remember businesses literally closing early and people leaving work early just to watch the series finale of Seinfeld. It felt like the whole world that day went to their homes just to do that and that excitement just isn’t around anymore for anything. Kids in school excited about upcoming video games cartoon episodes on Cartoon Network, excited about a new arcade cabinet by the pizzeria, excited about the launch of the ps1 and the Saturn and the n64, excited about a kid in class getting the new super soaker toy. That’s all missing now, excitement is gone, anticipation is gone, waiting in line for things and conversing with other human beings is gone, life is still amazing and I’m grateful for it everyday but those times as a kid and teen in the 90s and early 00s will never be duplicated.

Dude you nailed it here in every way possible. Too many options now. Everyone is so divided. And I don't mean politically (although they are.). But when you talk to 90's kids we all watched the same stuff, listened to the same stuff and had a bond around it. We had less options but still enough to satisfy different tastes. As you mentioned, life is still badass but the culture we had back then was just on a different level. It almost felt like we controlled the world a little bit in a weird way. Remember upgrading from Sega Master System to the Genesis. The games ran faster. Graphics on the Genesis blew you away.

You actually CAN jump over certain flagpoles in SMB1. However all it leads to was you running an infinite time to the right until the timer runs out.
And a rumor I really remember was that you could unlock the TMNT characters in Battletoads.

Awesome video guys, easily my favourite Retro Video on RUclips this year so far, I can relate on so much of this with my first console being a Sega Megadrive and then experiencing PS1 & PS2 before being a teen. Definitely agree on the small jumps after PS2, so many of my friends didn't think they saw much of a jump and therefore didn't get PS3s at all or straight away! Cheers 👍
I must admit, I got suckered in to the “L is Real” rumor. I spent so much time trying to figure out how to unlock Luigi. I remained a believer until the internet became more prominent and it was finally common knowledge that it wasn’t true. However, I’ll never feel like I waisted my time. It gave me more adventures with Super Mario 64. Another reason to continue playing it. A goal to pursue, even if it was impossible. How could I be mad about that?
I think your thoughts on your diminishing returns was so spot on. After getting a ps4 it became stagnant for me, plus all games I like we're remasters of ps3 so I'm like "why do I even have this?"
I think that's partly why nostalgia /retro gaming has taken off is because the next generations of consoles are no longer pushing innovation. I always wanted the next " best" thing when I wss younger but now I'm going through all the games and consoles I missed out in previous generations on and trying them out because that's way more exciting than what's being touted now.
I miss renting games so much. Reading the manual in the car, excitement building, then you go in and play it. There weren't such niche everything like there is now so I would try anything and everything to see what's out there. It was such an exciting time in the 90s cuz new and exciting things were happening. From age 6 to 13 I had an nes, genesis, then Playstation and the move to 3D was mind blowing. Resident Evil changed everything

I found out about in PS Magazine and looked at pics and read it almost everyday until I rented it, and lemme tell you it paid off!
Then I saw blurb about Silent Hill and knew I had to have it. Then after it came out there was an issue that had a walk through but I didn't use it unless I had to, but it waa such a cool thing.
Staying up late or all night with friends playing games will always beat online play...I've played enough online to know it just isn't my cup o tea. Local multi-player is king
Definitely miss gaming magazines. I've been collecting Nintendo Power and I'm so close to having the first 100. I actually sent off quite a stack of GamePro to MegaDan29. Demo discs are the best--I still enjoy collecting these and pick them up anytime I see them.
Someplace I still have a couple of VHS tapes buried of game endings as "proof" of games I beat that way if my friends wanted to see the ending, they could and I didn't have to go back through it (or redo a final battle, like in a RPG).
The first time I watched the ice cubes melt in MGS2 I was like what. WHAT!? THAT kind of attention to detail?
Yeah, my heart sank when I went looking for my old Nintendo Power mags in my parents' attic and found out they'd thrown them away years ago. I had issues #1 up until right around when the N64 came out.

To think in the late 90's, the internet and the gaming industry wasn't like it is today so if it wasn't for the now infamous Demo 1, I never would have discovered Metal Gear Solid.
Local co-op as a kid was the best. One of my favorite gaming memories was playing through Ninja Turtles 3 on the NES with a couple friends (we took turns since it was 2 players) and we got to the final boss:
One of us: "Oh it's Shredder agai...what's he holding?"
*Shredder breaks the Mutagen container and transforms*
All 3 of Us: IT'S SUPER SHREDDER! AAAAAAAAAAAH!

I don’t know that I think people are missing out on the kind of NES difficulty that comes from having to play a game over and over until they’ve memorized it. I do miss manuals though.

We would do a Royal Rumble on No Mercy but turn off over the top rope, make it hardcore, and only KO was the way to eliminate people. It would take hours and we loved every second of it.

I rode the Sega wave all the way until the end. The only Nintendo console I had until Sega stopped making hardware was the NES, which was outstanding, but when I went to Fortunoff and saw Sonic running across the screen through loops collecting rings and flying through the air, I was sold and I never looked back. Was with Sega from Genesis through Dreamcast. I even bought the Game Gear over the Gameboy. Used to love getting those demo discs. I played the demo disc for Night into dreams for years! Also loved my demo disc that had the home run derby for World Series Baseball for the Saturn. That in itself was fun. Great 2 player game. Nothing better than playing Xmen Vs Street Fighter and Marvel Vs Street fighter on Saturn (the versions where you can actually switch characters and had much better frame rates and more sprites than the PS version which was butchered) with a group of friends in person. 4 players on the Dreamcast for a game of Powerstone was an experience modern gamers will never experience.
I remember seeing on TV College Campuses with dudes linking 4 OG Xbox and playing HALO together in a room with 4 TVs... Big !!!

You can actually jump over the flag pole in Super Mario Bros. The only dang thing it does though is start you back at the beggining somehow lol. I did it and was pissed that there was no actual new world.
Graphical leaps for sure. If you look back at the first few generations there are pretty big jumps. Going from Genesis/SNES to a 3DO blew me away. They might be laughable now but the FMV light gun games were amazing to me at the time.

A few kids swore to god that you could get mew in pokemon by using strength on the truck. They always said they were never allowed to bring their game to school. I wish I could interview those people now.
A big rumor in my neck of the woods was that mew was hidden under the truck in the ss Anne area for pokemon red, blue, and yellow.
There is definitely many ways retro gaming was better. Modern gaming has it's pros but I miss the manuals so much!

Off the top of my head, I think we are down to 4 regular monthly gaming mags in the U.K. that you can walk into most newsagents and buy - Play (which was The Official Playstation Magazine but it’s no longer official), Edge, PC Gamer and Retro Gamer.
Back in the day every console had its own mag, often more than one (Playstation alone probably had 3 or 4), and there were several multi format mags.
Those days will never come back. Even a big seller like Switch doesn’t have its own official mag.
Demo discs were my favorite thing back in the day when getting magazines I used to collect playstation magazines when I had the PS1 it sucks now because you don't get many demos just betas and you just wait for the new game to come out
