Tips: Bagging and Offroad Shortcuts A strategy I frequently use is to "bag" for items. Hopping When you drift too far, instead of trying to turn the remainder of the time, you could press R a few times, hold your joystick neutral or slightly the opposite way you just drifted, and start another drift of the same side. You could also hop (with the joystick held neutral) if you are stuck in the offroad with no mushroom(s) or fail to charge up a mini-turbo. (Don't worry! The hopping concept took me about 2 weeks to understand and only saves a few seconds per lap) Item Usage If you are in first place, get a double item box, and pull a coin and banana, don't drop the banana behind you until a red shell hits you or you know you are going to get another item box. Hold L to drag a banana, green shell, red shell (if you don't have a choice, because CPUs tend to pull triple red shells in 3rd place) behind you until a red shell hits you. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can pull a super horn, which can also be used to dodge blue shells. Mushrooms can also be used to dodge blue shells, so that's another benefit of bagging, unless you get struck by lightning first (which always happens to me). Kart Combos The best combo in the game is (any color) Yoshi, Teddy Buggy, Roller, and Paper Glider. Even though that combo seems slow, it's mini-turbo stat is high and also has high invincibility stats. Try to not choose characters that are too large in size, such as Petey Piranha, which I never dodged a banana with!

You'll need to collect thousands of coins to unlock everything, so even when you're winning a race and you already have the maximum 10 coins, do go out of your way to keep collecting them, at least until every part has been unlocked. The more parts you have, the more you can tinker with the set-up to get a vehicle that perfectly fits your playing style.
