- Starting from a pushcart along Sungei Road, Ah Tee has been selling Ko Ko Mee for over 50 years. Meanwhile, tucked away in a corner of Coronation Shopping Plaza, My Cosy Corner has become a food institution among the residents and students in the area.
But with COVID-19 dining restrictions, these two food-stalls have seen their customer numbers dwindle. And while delivery is a lifeline for many hawkers, both Ah Tee Ko Ko Mee and My Cosy Corner have not subscribed to delivery services.
With uncertainty over their succession plans, could the pandemic spell the end of these beloved dishes?

As an Englishman i can say these hard working independent food retailers make Singapore special. Please don't lose your unique character. Good fortune and health to all.
I feel a lot for the hawkers under the COVID plight. There are hundreds more affected who are not featured here and just wanting to make an honest living. They are so important to the Singapore fabric and it will be a tragedy to lose them.
Not because they don't want to retire, it's because they take pride in what they do, don't want to feel that he's depend on children to survive, and because he's a father. Father always the head of family, always will be the one who provide, even though their children can and will care for him. Parents, I mean responsible parents always provide till the day they can't.
Agree although I kinda disagree with the wording on the last sentence. If a parent wants to retire and live off their retirement fund and not work/provide anymore (maybe because their children are adults or have their own families), then they are irresponsible?
The Singapore government should ensure that the hard working hawkers are supported financially in these difficult times, without them, Singapore would be just another cold boring city full of KFC, mac Donald, and pizza hut. It would be a city without a soul.

Imagine also if there is no KFC, McDonald's and Pizza Hut in Singapore and in other countries. It will also be boring. Instead of talking negatively, you could just have said that the Singapore government support the whole food industry.
I really enjoyed eating at the hawker's center. In one place you can eat what you like and want, without spending a fortune for it. As a tourist in Singapore, I will treasure my experience eating in hawker's place. God bless!
The government should establish a hawker platform for delivery to cap the cost at 15pct so Grab and deliveroo do not capitalize on it. 30 pct charge is ridiculous and equivalent to modern day slavery.

True.. been wondering bout this since the start of the pandemic. GOVERNMENT ENTITY to deliver goods n services to the people, just like national postal service. I guess grab n others just lobied the government not to implement it. The charges are ridiculous.

Here in Indonesia, thankfully it’s 20% only. It’s a lot for me as a merchant. But it helps a lot. In Indonesia, food delivery is for everyone. Everybody orders food online. And old people also sell through Grabfood or Gofood (by Go-Jek). It’s surprising that in Singapore some legendary stalls don’t even sell it online.
Ya, end up the delivery people take a pay cut lor, because Singapore no minimum wage law.
I think Cozy Corner is not badly affected compared to other elderly hawkers.... it was actually featured in one of the taiwanese RUclipsr foodie video last year... More effort should be placed in hawkers who are struggling due to lack of social exposure and digital literacy to promote their food. But we must encourage them to improve their food standard too. Else it is not sustainable.
These hwaker featured in this video are all very passionate people. They all invest efforts into perfecting the food they sell.

This ko ko mee will be in my bucket list when visit Singapore once restriction lifted. Hope this noodle will make me cry with happiness and those attap house memories.....

Exactly what mindset were you referring to? People are still supporting hawkers by buying their meals from hawkers are they not?
@@sktoh4469 People should support hawkers by willing to pay more, but not with the old mindset that hawkers have nice and cheap foods. Disclaimer: I have never been to Singapore and never tried hawker food.
@@kcanyon9108 If you go to Singapore, you will find there's a large number of places that sell hawker food and a large number of people patronising them almost non-stop on a daily basis. In a free market capitalist economy like Singapore's, sellers (i.e. hawkers) set their prices and buyers can choose whom to buy from. Sellers who set their prices too high will see a drop in the number of customers willing to pay the high prices.
Eventually, market forces will ensure prices adjust to what is known as a price equilibrium. Sure, prices tend to rise over time due to inflation. However, suggesting that people should voluntarily pay more when there are less costly alternatives is unrealistic.
Only in a communist system would you see prices manipulated to suite the whims and fancies of the government. Wisely, China saw that communism didn't work. You should too.

Why are some hawkers not under NEA's purview and not given rental waiver? I think the delivery platforms are earning too much a cut from these hawkers. The delivery businesses r thriving on these hardworking hawkers who are trying to make a meagre income.
delivery platforms isn't a charity organisation. They are no different from any other business providing goods and services. No one is sticking a knife down people's neck and forcing others to use them.
hawker could've opt out.. or even if they raise the cost of the food, it's still better to earn something than no customer at all...
@@bchpls24 That's why the guy in the video said that we (as customers) need to change our mindset "hawker food are cheap food that shouldn't cost more than $2 or $3". If we don't want to pay more than that then where does that leave the seller? The delivery app is certainly not a charity and the sellers are having a very thin margin already. The longer your supply chain is the more expensive the product is going to cost for customer.
Its been 15 years since I last set foot in SG.
My son was just 13 months and learned walking in SG!
My family had meals in one of those hawker centers!
Should I return to SG, I'll definitely visit these hawkers again!.

(Honestly i was also Selling Cakes..@ East Coast Beach)...Not Easy it's 24/7 job..n Competitors is also another Challenge where 10 Person selling same product with One Customer...Bottomline is i RESPECT the Uncle/Auntie-Hardwork n Never Say "Give Up"attitude...

Thanks for making this video, CNA. I don't know the impact or reach of these types of videos, but anything that can create more visibility and tell the stories of hawkers can't hurt. At 09:33, when Ah Tee mentioned that Pornsak had approached him for a feature on a 广告, the English subs used "programme" but I believe "commercial" or "advertisement" could have been lexically more accurate.
This is Ah Tee’s joy - he feels a need to be productive & useful. Many who retire end up sick or dead. The incentive & drive drives ppl to be alive, functional & fulfilled.
I love mee pok mien,so tasty! i ate it everytime i went to hawker centre how i miss Singapore.I love Singaporian food.I wish i can still go back to Singapore.

Though the auntie said she didn't want to pressure his son, but I'm sure it will be heartbroken when the time come and his son said 'No'.
Same with Ah Tee, he hope his son could continue their family business, but reality said otherwise.

Singaporean hawkers should form a union and demand rental cut from NEA. Better yet, stage a protest by not going to work and not opening your stall.

I will go to Singapore soon. When searching the hawkers info, I happened to see this video, very impressive. Thanks CNA. But I learned Ah Tee's stall has been closed last year. What's a pity. It's definitely a challenge to preserve such heritage. 😓😓 All the best to uncle Ah Tee, wishing him good health and happiness.
I want those bamboo pieces. As an itinerant vendor originally, Ah Tee would use the bamboo pieces to signal his arrival. As children, we always ran out of the house when we heard the tok-tok-tok sound, looking for the man (not Ah Tee in my case.) The vendor moved around the neighborhood pushing his noodle cart; after the rain, he still sloshed about in his flip-flops, sometimes the water came up to his ankles but that didn't seem to bother him a bit.
Please support the small businesses. Behind every small business is a family.

Coronation plaza was a quiet plaza. Not much foot traffic. This is how I remember when they first opened, sorry, I can’t remember the actual year. I used to go to NTUC in this plaza in the late seventies, when I was a student.
Singapore number one KoKo noodle. I used to eat 3 times weekly!
Real stories, when a small bisness are putting real honest effort more than big bisnesses do, as seems like most govt tend to look after big bisnesses and recognize they are competing in an even playing field. Whereas small entity pockets directly into their thin hands thus affects more, costs less right. Like it takes a fortune to help them. Respect every old timers that works and that mentality, golden. Generations that wasnt ruined by gadgets, modern slavery by big corp. Bravo to our locals, pls support them. Really hope this pandemic could turn into blessings in disguise

Please have a chat with your government and urge them to work out how Australians can travel to Singapore a soon as possible. i feel like this is similar to the case of "gacha games and high-effort games". the former earn a lot through gacha with just rich stories but few templates and advocate it as a "free game", while the latter invest high effort including stories and experience and advocate it as a "premium game" with an expensive (often dirt cheap during the sale) one-off price tag.

The guy that does not want to retire reminds me of my dad. He never wanted to retire, and warned me that retirement means boredom. I laughed and assured my dad that I only worked because I had bills to pay. People are different, and that is fine. I happily retired at 48 and never once missed having a job ha ha 😎

I can't help to comment and feedback to the Popiah store. 1) Go no delivery platform and rise the price. If your food is good, your loyal customer will buy. Delivery platform would shown whether its the same price in store or otherwise. 2) Maintain own phone line delivery supply chain and physical takeaway where the price remain the same. Customer would have options. Only differ is the price. I can only see win-win from this resolution.
I don't know how it is in Singapore but in my country there are some restaurants who put higher price on the app and it's cheaper if you do takeaway from the restaurant itself. I think that's understandable and people shouldn't be put off to buying food that's a few dollars more expensive. I get it that these are hard time and people become more price sensitive but it's also equally hard for the sellers if they have to cut their margin just to maintain the same price on the app as on the store.
Malaysian hawkers face same problem criticise their govt. very day.

Funny, in Sngapore it seems the pensioners are poor. Here in Denmark, the pensioners are the most well-off group.
The hawkers are not pensioners. In fact only a small percentage of the population have any pensions
I think he was referring to how the old people coming to buy food from hawkers are remarked on as having little money to pay for food.
pensioners arent poor bec they recd the said sums regularly but those who retire on the savings tat hv been accumulated may run out if they outlast his own money 💰 pool

Work keeps it going, the moment you stop working, all the old age illness start coming out.

There has to be a way to keep these places going. In a country of 6 million people, if every household spent a certain minimum number of dollars a day across all these hawker stalls, the ice cream uncles, and so on, all will survive the COVID.

I will say give some slack to younger hawkers, don't start discourage them and compare harshly with their previous generation.
Give them a chance to grow and with their unique style. Cooking is an art, nobody can fully replicate
the original master.
Sometimes I like the second generation style more because they attempt to change for the better.
