  • This is a brilliant new kit from Airfix. I never once was bored with building this kit. And it was really fun to build something in a unique scheme like this.

    Beautiful work on a very sexy plane!
    My dad was nose gunner in a B-24 during World War II and second radio man.
    His plane had a mouse throwing a bomb on the nose.
    It was called Super Mouse!
    There were a lot of planes adorned with naughty nose art as well.
    I have many photographs of nose art that my dad took during the war.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  5 лет назад

      That is really cool Scott. It's always fun to see comments like yours from people who have connections like this to aircraft. If I ever find the Hasegawa 1:72 B-24 for a good price, I think I'll consider making it the Supermouse. Since he was the nose gunner, I assume this was the B-24J variant?

      @scotthaddad563 5 лет назад

      rebelsatcloudnine
      I’m not sure of the exact variation of the plane but I believe that he mentioned that there were twin fifties in the nose which is different that the model shown here.

      This is a B-25 Mitchell, you said B-24 Liberator.

      Wow. How could I watch this whole video and not notice that this is a B-25?
      I must be getting old not to notice the absence of two more engines and totally ignore the description.
      I just watched your video on the Lancaster at the Museum and couldn’t help but notice the similarity to the B-24.

    Enjoyable build vid. My primary criticism, the person at Airfix selecting the either, or horrible decal choice included paint schemes *in so many of their current kits* needs eviscerating with a saw-back bayonet. At the Eduard Profipack price point of Airfix's new tool kit range, *that* in conjunction with their still all in one plastic bag packaging dressed up in a glam but flimsy red box which doesn't transit well in an age when etail is King, no supplied perspex or wheel masks, no PE or resin extras, exacerbated by inexcusably lazy Revellesque instructions for a product produced on the cheap in India! Pass. Not when I have to buy at considerable additional expense aftermarket decals and masks to render a model I would enjoy researching and to display. Most egregious is Airfix's cheapskate exploitation with constant reissuing in 'different dresses' copying Hasegawa's limited release marketing. I'd really really really have to want a B-25 to buy Airfix's. As someone who grew up on 1/72 Airfix, I detest what the brand has since become. Although I now build predominantly 1/48, I seldom buy the brand today when Eduard, Tamiya, Hasegawa and Zvezda, the latter at a much lower price point are are so much better. When it comes to spending my $$ in the B game, I prefer the superior value of Revell's licenced dual decal version reboxings of extant Hasegawa and Eduard mould offerings to Airfix. Just not a fan in 2020.

    @rebelsatcloudnine - when I was your age there were Monogram and Revell. My brother did the WW11 bombers and fighters - I avoided the bombers as they overwhelmed me in their infinite detail. I guess a Canadian Trekker has the detachment (if one is a perfectionist then keep them away from the kits as they will go mad!) and concentration and experience and skill to go with the big birds. Monogram had accurate detail - rivets'n'stuff however Revell did planes like the Me262 and others I couldn't find in the books - they did planes that were classified at the time! Monogram's choices of planes was a laundry list of popularity - P-51, Spit, Corsair and the like and rarely an unknown craft. Revell even, decades after my modeling, made the Bob Lazar reverse engineered "Sports Model" of E.T. craft right from Bob's own drawings. To commit to such a choice was to invite shadow government investigation, I'm not making this up. MIBs visiting certain employees of Revell and the whole bit. Your B-25 is gorgeous - bound for Africa? I'm not reading the map so up close. Looks like desert camo. Aloha.

      It helped a bit, it was actually more helpful to have the metal landing gear to support all the extra lead weight that I added. So I would say that it's a good value. But sadly not heavy enough to only use.

    How did you manage to keep the nose down on this kit. I built the same one (alternate markings) , filled the nose gear bay with shot, and ball bearings in the bomb-aimers crawlspace, and its still a tail sitter. Ended up with a bit of perspex rod to keep it up. Thinking about doing the Doolittle raid version, but not if i can't get it to sit.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  4 года назад

      Yeah I crammed a lot in it, and it barely sits on it's nose. I added extra weights behind the firewalls in engine nacelles. It's very heavy, but the design of the B-25 it needs a lot of weight.

      Thank you Duncan, and greetings from Alberta Canada :) I use a Tamiya HG Superfine III, but for a beginner airbrush there's nothing better than an Iwata NEO CN. This was the first airbrush that I used, and it lasted really well for it's 5-year warranty. I like it because it's a very new user friendly without being overly complicated as some more high-end brushes tend to be. And you can get some really great results with it. I don't know the manufacturer of my compressor, on the other hand, it's a simple generic (and noisy) compressor. It shoots about 25 PSI so that's basically all that I need, I have a control on it for less air.

      @@duncankent1330 That's a really good point, as a lot of learning to airbrush is trail and error, and that includes maintenance of the airbrush. If I can offer any advice on that subject it's to try and not get frustrated by the airbrush, they take a while to get the hang of, but once you do the world is yours :)

    Okay lets start fresh here. I apologize for typing caps and offending you. Life is too short to make enemies.Thank You for giving me the info on the display base as it really shows off your model beautifully. One question if I may? Did you use a gloss varnish before you did your wash? It looks terrific.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  5 лет назад

      Agreed, I mistook your post as hostile and I clearly overreacted. Yes, I coated it in a few layers of Future Floor Polish. I know many modelers see Future as a silly way to get a gloss coat, but I apply it with a brush and I'm pretty pleased with the end result. Often I'll keep glossing the model as Future is a really thin layer I'm not worried about build up. I'll glossed it before and after the decals and again when the enamel wash was laid down.

    Beautiful work... very relaxing video too! BTW, I am so glad that you didn't add chipping to the propellers. Modelers keep doing that all the time, but in the real world, chipped props blades were replaced or repaired instantly as they would otherwise be dangerous to fly with.

    That was very entertaining! Reminded me of the movie Catch 22. I could see Rosarian in the nose of your model asking where his parachute is 😳 I’ve got a few questions though. #1.Is this airplane currently in a museum? The nose art kinda reminds me of the history of a B25 and it’s exploits in North Africa during WWII with it citations listed. #2. Why is a British tail flash on the vertical stabs? Is there an American version that uses that kind of identification? #3. What did you do to make it NOT be a tail sitter? The real-estate is at a premium in that nose. And #4. What was that tool you used applying the tail gunners glass? Does it use vacuum? If so, I need one of those! Beautiful job!👍🏼

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  4 года назад

      "Where the hell is my parachute"?
      1. Not that I'm aware of. This B-25 was similar to the B-17 Memphis Belle as it was the first to finish its tour of duty. The map on the nose was to show the locations that were bombed.
      2. I believe that this was because it was when the U.S first joined in one the war. They were fighting alongside the British at this point and being shot down. So the solution was to add Canadian radio operators to the U.S crews. These Canadians in the RCAF would guide the American pilots around the British locations so that they wouldn't get shot at.
      3. Aside from the Scale Aircraft Conversions white metal set, I added a lot of weight to behind the cockpit, and they still wasn't enough so I had to add more behind the firewalls in the nacelles.
      4. I can't remember what that thing is called but yeah it's a little suction cup tool. Basically like a pipette, I don't use it that much but when I do I really need it so I'm glad that I bought it.

    Good job! A nice kit in 1/72 scale. 👍
    If you’re looking for a good B-25 C/D kit in 1/48 scale, get the Academy kit. They made the “Doolittle Raider” version and also the “Pacific Theater” strafer gun nose version. I built both of them. Great kits too. 👍

    Excellent model, well done! And I have two questions, I hope someone responds. Wouldn't mineral spirits take off any of the paint when removing the wash with a brush? And, after the decals are applied would it make sense to use a knife to scribe along the panel lines instead of having the decals sit right on top? I've always wondered about my second question.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  4 года назад

      No, because the Mineral Spirits is only reacting to the oil paints. It can take off acrylic if you are really aggressive with the Spirits. I used a good gloss coat before the oils to protect the surface layer. That's what I did to the decals after they had settled onto the model. I took a new knife and cut the decals in the panel lines, then I added more decal solvents to help the new edges conform to the surface.
