    I'm 64... When I was a young teen my best friend's father flew in this very squadron Box "K" and was a ball turret gunner. He always told us great stories about how he went thru 3 planes because they were so damaged, and he always kept the altimeters which he proudly displayed on his desk. I also never knew how colorful his B17 really was until one Christmas the family gave him the 1/32nd B17G Monogram model. Wayne was into HO trains and was a very experienced modeler, and when he finished the B17 I was shocked by all the different colors on the model and thought for a while maybe he lost his touch and went overboard painting his B17 with all those bright colors. One day his wife showed me a rare color picture of Wayne standing with all his crew along side his B17 and was blown away how he duplicated the exact color scheme on his Monogram model... It was then that he began to tell us stories of the crazy color schemes of those formation lead planes, with the polka dots and other wild colors. From that point on I really began to become a real war airplane nut.

      That's really interesting, your father was one of the few who survived that terrible campaign, over Europe I believe? Or perhaps the Pacific?
      But anyway, I have always loved the nose art, where each aircraft had its own name, emblem, or motto, this gave the airmen some kind of morale during their activities.
      Thanks for letting us know that as there's not many of those old airmen around anymore, thank you!

    Nice modelling of TNT Katie.
    And a nice memorial to the six men who died aboard her when she was hit by flak over Oranienburg on March 15th 1945. Elmer Diefe, Bob Stephens, Costas Ivos, Bob Renartson, Allen Swem and John Piccardo.
    Pilot Henry Chandler, Navigator Dave Skalka and Bombardier Sid Murachver survived and became prisoners of war.
    Lest we forget.

      Thanks Mike, I'm puzzled on how they could have gotten that thick and were never corrected by Airfix, even at 1:24th scale they'd be too big. But it was worth it in the end, it took 2 hours to sand then all, but I'm glad that I did :)

      thank YOU...i have a collection of unbuilt kits and you have inspired me to treat the models as art, not just as a throw away pastime, which was slowly eating my enthusiasm to build. but you have taken model building and elevated it to an art form...and when you think about it, that's where the model build belongs...as art rather than accuracy. i mean of course accuracy is penultimate but art...that is the difference.so many want to examine perfection and accuracy but watching you build...i realized that only a master craftsman/artiast, with many hours/ years of practise, can lift the plastic model to examination, not just of the accuracy but including accuracy in the art of creating the spirit of the times the model is to represent. and the message that the builder is trying to convey. You conveyed the drama, the environment and the spirit of the airwar in ETO in 1944-45. just looking at your model brought the images of eightth airforce england. i imagined the rain soaked aprons, the tow tractors, the quonset huts, the fuel trucks, the bicycles, the ground crew and aircrew, the missions to be undertaken as the windsocks filled with air...and the sheer terror of the flak, the fighters and mid air collisions... and bomb laden taxi collisions... and everything else during those distant days...man, you caused all this.. again, i must say..that..you are an artist of the first rank... and i will study every thing you do in your builds and use what you do to try and make my models better...but whether i can capture the spirit of the aircraft and the time in whgich it flew...well...i can only be your disciple but never to surpass you, only to learn from you...thankyou, xxxxxjane@@rebelsatcloudnine

    Yo! What's that glue in the blue bottle? Also, great choice and use of these paints and the spraygun. (I've seen far worse on another brand of a B-17)!
    Unfortunately, the black base and aluminium overspray show a ridge between both fuselage halves in front of the cockpit. Sanding or scraping would have remedied that after the base went on.
    All in all, a joy to watch your building and finishing ! Bavo on the fine result. Many thanks. Be proud !

  • @theblytonian3906
    @theblytonian3906 2 года назад

    Okie dokie. So now having built both new tool kits, Revell & Airfix, which did you think the better A. kit and B. overall model in terms of representative fidelity? Appreciate the Airfix is a G and the Revell you built was an F but a release from 2012 based off their 2010 G tooling.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine 2 года назад +1

      Honestly, both are decent kits, and both have their issues. Neither one is more accurate than the other, they both suffer problems with accuracy. I think that the Airfix kit is a bit better in it's design, but taking into consideration a lot of it's design is incredibly similar to the Revell kit. Lastly, I've seen many builds of the Revell B-17G model and a few of the Airifx kit. Revell created 2 kits with a lot more variety and options, and Airfix, I think played it smart by creating a late version of the B-17G, it's more limited in options, but, it makes it a unique model.

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 2 года назад

      @@rebelsatcloudnine Thanks for the persperctive. I have the Revell G. I think it's an excellent kit, but for that nose transparency. The slant angle of the section encapsulating the bombardiers window is far too steep. It's an eye magnet which destroys standoff profile of the nose section so that the model 'just looks wrong'. Very disappointing.
      Otherwise I'd rate Revell's B-17G a 10/10 (staggered vs adjacent waist windows anomalies per stinger/Cheyenne tail and decal choice notwithstanding.

You painted only the vertical stabilizer. I’m sorry for being a massive dork and possible push-over, but sometimes tiny things like that get me.

The Kits-World decal sheet/ painting guide has them as silver so I simply went with that. In all sincerity, you might want to consider passing this info onto Kits-World. As I mentioned I simply decided to follow what they had displayed on the sheet as I couldn't find any conclusive evidence for this particular aircraft :)

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine 2 года назад +1

      I think the best advice I can give you (and this is coming from someone who isn't good at weathering) A little bit of weathering usually is best. There are too many times when one can get carried away weathering and it becomes too extreme and unrealistic. Gradually weathering and taking time to stand back and look at the model from a few feet away helps out a lot too.
      I also try to keep photo's on my computer that are dedicated to real life weathering that I take when I'm outside. This includes unique stains that I'll find on vehicles or chipped paint, which is sort of easy given the amount of farm equipment in the area haha

    A fitting tribute to the 8th AF. Half of the U.S. Army Air Forces' casualties in World War II were suffered by the 8th Air Force (more than 47,000 casualties, with more than 26,000 dead).

    On the spews the panel lines looked raised, but in the build most looked recessed. Did you use a panel line scribe over them to reverse?

      All of the panel lines were recessed. I rescribed the ones on the fuselage as they weren't pronounced enough.

    I built this kit from Airfix some years ago, and it was very poorly moulded.
    I think maybe it was manufactured in old moulds.
    Your kit here looks to be of very good quality, I wonder? Did another company take over from Airfix?

    Another clean, satisfying kit build production. You make it seem effortless! (BTW, just how many rebels? Is your secret for your alacrity that you lot are clones?-albeit from a galaxy far, far away? Or Canadian Star Trek fans?)
    Round 13:50, you mask the aluminum-painted cowl and nacelle prior to painting the bright blue. Yes, I long have wondered the same thing about the notion of ADDING silvery paint to a subtractive process as paint chipping.
    I very much would like to hear/read your comparison of this Airfix B-17G kit with Revell Germany’s B-17F kit.

      I had planned on doing a video comparing the 2 kits, but this was several years ago, and then life got in the way and that took a lot of my time away from modeling. So I've kind of forgotten about doing that. I'd still like to, but I wonder if after all of this time I can still remember the main differences with the kits.

      A step-uncle of my maternal aunt had told me that during the Second World War, the tail gunner in his Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress USAAF Heavy Bomber had been Gene Autry, who after his combat service had earned fame as “the Singing Cowboy” in postwar black & white Westerns. He also was the first well-known performer to popularise the endearing ballad “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” in a 45 rpm record.

    Hello, I’m trying to airbrush the panel line accent colour black but it always shoots spider webs and all and I’m wondering what did you do to do it properly? What was your PSI? Did you mix anything into the black accent colour?

      That's a difficult question honestly. I was planning on doing a video on that very subject in the near future. I think it's important to note that Airfix "borrowed" a lot of the same design features from the Airfix kit. But there are places that Airfix improved upon, and other area's where the engineering just didn't work.
      Both kits have their accuracies and inaccuracies, I feel that both are about 50-50 on that offence. And both kits had moments where I said "What the hell were they thinking? Or, this could have been simplified"
      There's a lot more detail on the interior of the Revell kit, than in many places of the Airfix, but I think Airfix had the right idea as not a lot of the details would be seen.
      With the Revell G and F models you get a lot more variety in the parts, so you can build a specific version of a B-17 which is great considering the amount of decals on the market. With Airfix you are limited to only a late G model.
      All that being said, I put the Revell kit down multiple times while I was building it, but I think a part of that was because I was building the Memphis Belle and trying to get it accurate to the real bomber. I had a lot more fun with the Airfix kit, and there were plenty of times I was frustrated, but in the end I never put it away, I kept building it.
      If I had to build another one tomorrow, I think I might be more inclined towards the Airfix kit.
