As a medical student who is considering OBGYN, I really appreciate this video. You helped me understand what we as health care providers can do better to make you feel more comfortable. I am sorry for what you and many others have to go through in order to take care of your health. I also appreciate the awareness you bring, it is so important to see a gynecologist every year. Take care.
If you are going to be a medical professional please take no advice from someone who calls it "Lady junk". Science and facts don't care about your feelings and please don't let emotion get in the way of your studies.
I’m almost 22 and have never been to a gynecologist. I know I’m supposed to go for my health but I have no intention of doing it. The sheer amount of discomfort and embarrassment is too much for me to envision.
@AceOfHearts Woooow this is false!! The whole point of a pelvic exam is to detect abnormal cells from the cervix! Before they turn cancerous! NOT to detect the virus that can cause cervical cancer. Just because you have never had sex doesn't mean you should get screened. Cervical Cancer can still develop without the HPV virus. The virus is just one thing that can cause it. Please do not spread misinformation like that, you're playing with people's health. Please see these links with more info: www.cancer.ca/en/cancer-information/diagnosis-and-treatment/tests-and-procedures/pap-test/?region=on www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/pap-smear/about/pac-20394841 www.cancercareontario.ca/en/types-of-cancer/cervical/screening I've heard from doctors who've done pap test on people who've never done them out of fear only to find out the person already has advance cervical cancer. This is dangerous shit.
theBEARnecessities You’re still spreading false information: “HPV is an infection that causes warts in various parts of the body, depending on the strain. HPV stands for Human papillomavirus...You can be infected with HPV without being sexually active - as HPV spreads easily through skin-to-skin contact, it is possible to be infected with HPV without having sex. Prolonged contact with infected skin, such as holding hands, may cause transmission of the virus...You're most likely to get an HPV infection from vaginal or anal intercourse, or from oral sex. It's possible but uncommon to transmit the virus through genital contact without penetration, or by touching the genitals. And a mother can transmit HPV to her baby during birth, but this is also uncommon.”
~Crimson Critter~ yeah my pcp is awesome and the whole health system has a specific lgbt center to help patients connect with good doctors/care. But it’s also the whole thing of taking care of parts of the body that I’ve disassociated with for my whole life. So no matter how best their practices are it’s still complicated. But I’m sure we all can relate to this in some way.
Doctors bring a nurse in as an accountability person. It’s a witness for patient safety, to insure the doctor behaves professionally. Not usually because the doctor has had a problem, but usually a clinic move to uphold safe standards for patients! It feels less awkward if you remember that next time. Sorry you didn’t have a great experience, Mack. Really happy to hear you intend to keep up with your checkups, they’re important!
I'm watching this video because I have a gynecologist appointment tomorrow and I'm really anxious about it. I've been two times before with a doctor who was extremely nice, but I'm pretty sure I'm going with a new one tomorrow and it's just rolling the dice here in my country (Chile), I've been to so many other doctors for tummy stuff that didn't know anything about trans people or straight up were assholes that I'm now scared of any unknown doctor... I miss when I was a kid and going to the doctor just meant I was going to feel better and that was it
For people in the US, Planned Parenthood, if there's one near you, is very trans-friendly, and they serve all genders on a regular basis, so it's not unusual to see a male patient coming in for whatever services he might be needing that day. Far less awkward than going to a "women's clinic".
Dude. I've been through this. Lol They asked me if I was there for my wife or girlfriend when I came in for the appointment. When I called to make the appointment, they asked if I was calling for my wife or GF also lol. They had me put on this gown with flowers lol. Luckily, over the years, I've only been to a women's clinic once because my main doc also does Paps so no having to go through that. I only get paps once every few years because I've never been sexually active in that way, and haven't had any problems to have to be checked a lot. But you got through it man, and that part of your health is important. Glad to hear you took care of things 🙂.
i need to schedule with a gyno soon and I'm worried I'm gonna have a panic attack and/or just start crying in the middle of the appointment. either that or just completely shut down and dissociate through the whole thing
Hello Mack, thank you for telling your story. I am working on a project to gather resources for DIY Gynecology and sex education. I am a cis/fluid-woman, while I have a very different relationship to my sex organs, I still find the gynecology office traumatic everytime I go. I have been really hurt by both admins, nurses and doctors in the field. The sturrups are humiliating, uncomfortable and frankly unnecessary. The history of gynecology is pretty dark and it begins to explain the torcher devices they use at the clinics. Anyway, I am sorry for your emotionally taxin experience, and I to the degreee to which I can as a woman, appreciate your story.
So glad to have access to an LGBTQ health clinic. Everyone there is accepting and understanding of trans people. Have you tried to see if there's a Planned Parenthood or an LGBTQ health clinic near you?
I want to keep my uterus for the next few years. I maybe even want to get pregnant. I am a bit nervous about pregnancy inspecifically but I want to keep the option open.
I had to get a pap and a chest exam before getting my first t shot.. i had put the exams off for 10 years so they kinda made me do it. But luckily where i live i just go to my gp, no 'women's' clinic necessary.
Gynecology (n.) also gynaecology, "science of women's health and of the diseases peculiar to women," 1847, from French gynécologie, from Latinized form of Greek gynaiko-, combining form of gynē "woman, female," from PIE root *gwen- "woman." Second element is from French -logie "study of," from Greek (see -logy).
Great video! Thanks for sharing! I appreciate your struggles. Being a dude in a gynecology office is tough, being a dude in a dress at a gynecology office is pretty tough too. I have my own mirror version of the same struggles. Just today, I went to a lab to have blood drawn to check my hormone levels. They called me from the (very full) waiting room, using my male name.....awkward....but then something strange happened. The tech drawing my blood "mammed" me and continued using female pronouns. She even hugged me when it was over......didn't see that coming!

You don’t have to go to a women’s clinic for a simple check up and Pap smear! Your GP can take care of that and if there are any issues you can then be referred to a specialist. I’m not saying the process will be any less unpleasant but at least you don’t have to sit in a waiting room full of women before the appointments.
