    You should build a temporary shelter in front of your caravan so you can leave your boots outside and dry your dog off etc plus even when it’s raining you still have an extra dry place you can sit out in, plus you can always repurpose the structure once you move into your tiny home.

      I thought the same, a boot room to prevent you from stepping in your new home with muddy boots. Brilliant idea. Even a covered area would work, doesn't have to be anything substantial (yet) lol

      A good idea indeed... I think a cheap plastic garden shed or something that can be put up quickly. Then the shed could later be used elsewhere on the property. Extra tough plastic could be draped over and weighted/tacked/down on the new home framing temporarily keeping rain out, less water pooling inside causing any damage. Nice work so far with the green house - garden construction. Good to know the sawmill people are helping with pro ideas/planing. (Fingers crossed lots of sunshine returns soon!)

      Thanks Angel :) we agree! Some of the footage at the start of this video showed the mess from last year in the rain when we were breakdown down the caravans, it's actually the best it's ever looked . We try and do a big tidy most weeks, as the land just had endless rubbish left on it. We did two big trips the the recycling centre last week which was the most stratifying feeling. We also want to get the land re-tarmac'd so hopping that will make a big change too 🤞

    • @PsychicIsaacs
      @PsychicIsaacs 3 месяца назад +6

      @@TimLallemant Yes, I have a solar generator and inverter which converts to 240v supply, and my own water tower that gravity feeds water to my house. This was a very common method of having a water supply in my country (Australia) in the early days and a lot of older rural properties still have a water tower. It works just as well now as it did when this house was built, 40 years ago, and the advantage with an off grid system is that the electric water pump only needs to be run once a week.
      Water is collected in a large water tank from my roof and although I live in a semi-arid area (average rainfall of 400mm), and sometimes have no rain whatsoever for five months over Summer, I have never run out of domestic water, in this time. I have 40,000 litres of storage and allocate myself 1000 litres per week.

Delightful but crowded with vacationers during warm days but considerably windy and rainy during hurricane season. Today for example, it’s cold and rainy. Whereas yesterday it was 24’ F in the morning but with the sun shining got up to 45’F. I spent the first two weeks last January last January in Paris with some colder weather and 5 weeks backpacking around Brittany and Normandy in September and October as well. It's not only Wales that's had rain !
    I live in a Park Home, 30ft from the River Avon in the Cotswolds. Four days into the New year we had to evacuate, as the park was under water, when the river burst its banks and become a raging torrent.
    The homes are anchored to a concrete base on a cantilever system with Flotation devices, whilst these were not triggered this time, it was still horrible to see the mess that was caused by the floods.
    This winter and last was just so much rain, it's ridiculous.
    Whilst living beside the river is glorious, peaceful with the wildlife, narrowboats etc, in winters like these, you do start to question wether it's worthwhile !
    Good luck with your build !👍👌

    With all the bad weather you get in Wales, you should build add an enclosed porch to your tiny house. You could keep shoes and firewood in there, hang up wet raincoats and grow some seeds in Spring.
    You could even add it on both side. One as a screened in porch for outdoor entertainment and the other side as a mud/storage room.
    I’ve seen someone build two tiny houses. They build an atrium in between to connect both units.

Once you get the tresses up and a few sheet of roofing, it will start to feel like you are making a lot of progress. In the mean time step back and see how much you two have done and accomplished on your land and shelter. Go get em guys and enjoy the journey and have fun. Always remember that water is life especially when you are going to grow your own food. What the ground absorbs now will only be a few feet down so the roots of your plants will have good access all summer. It indeed feels miserable now, but this part is the hardest you will have. Once you have a cosy, dry home and exterior spaces for changing wet boots etc life will seem much easier.

    You might want to make your greenhouse roof slanted for ease of re-assembly in the future. A high front panel, a low rear panel and the two side panels re-cut to the roof slant. Easy to insert a new top rail in the three panels and trim down with a saw. Sliding the roof panel from the rear will become easier too. You might want to put an angled trim / fascia on the roof edges to stop the wind getting straight under the plastic panels. The uplift on the panels from wind gusts is very high!
    I have memories from when we built our own house of my mother in law sweeping rain water every time she turned up and of "friends" turning up in white T shirts and even whiter trainers, never venturing near to anything remotely muddy. I spent weeks putting in surface drainage that no one ever saw or will ever see again. Been there.Done that. You have my admiration

    I know typically rendering is a job for summer, but as not many have house rendered through the winter, we managed to get our hands on heavily discounted bags of render and wanted our house ready to sit back and enjoy summer.

    Wonderful to see you back again- i was suffering from withdrawal symptoms! Love the greenhouse - genius idea! I've had a thought how you might keep the floor of your house dry: have you considered putting up pop-up gazebos inside the frame, on the floor? With sides fitted, it would stay dry. You could tie it to the framework to keep it in place, and the pitch of the gazebo would allow water to run off the sides. If side pieces aren't long enough, use tarpaulin sheets in their place. Fixed to roof of gazebo out to base of frame. In effect, a fully covering, but easily moveable/ removable roof within the frame! When the proper roof is finished, I'm sure you can still make good use of the gazebo, so no wasted expenditure! Hope i described my idea clearly?! If not, let me know, and I'll email!
    Looking forwards to your next update!
    Keep up the great work, and don't let the weather bring you down- better times are coming ( we all hope)!!😊👍

    • @Wimpleman
      @Wimpleman 3 месяца назад +2

      Nice suggestion, I have an inkling that the wind is so severe that it would destroy any gazebos - even if they are lashed into place - but that's a total guess. Fingers crossed the rain stays away and keeping it dry is no longer as big a consideration

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks Iain, that is a genius idea - the only issue we have is as we are located on top of a hill we get hit pretty hard by the wind and nothing seems to survive here! We are hoping we will get the roof on next week and then it's time to board/add the OSB & waterproof membrane, so fingers crossed it won't have to be out in the elements for too much longer 🤞

    I know it's so hard to do what you are doing and it's a long journey with so so much work! Please don't despair about the rain and probably also wind as not only you with your off grid life are getting tired of all the challenges coming out of this particular weather period. Everyone is going through loads of unpleasant times right now. I am only saying this to comfort you: you didn't make a mistake or wrong decision, it's just what it is right now. I wish you that it'll get drier very soon! I live in the West of Ireland and it's been a bummer this year with damage of our very small greenhouses during the storms, there has been so much rain and also cold and very wild weather which led to changes in what is going to happen in the garden this for us here. Flexibility and resilience is what we all need right now. Be well and slow down if needed, rest when needed as it's going to get better but you as well as everyone else will need strength for what is coming, this year has only just started.

    As much as we may complain about the downsides of civilisation, there is a reason it exists and we have over generations built a cosy comfortable way of life as a society.
    The brutal reality is that true "Off Grid" living is hard...really hard, all the time. And it gets harder as you get older. We no longer live in caves or shacks because that is simply not pleasant.
    We moved to Spain and did up a place in the mountains and have built a large solar installation with inverters, batteries etc and we are ~96% self sufficient in energy, but even here there are days when the sun doesn't shine enough. As for being self sufficient in food, water, sewerage and everything else...forget it. It's a fun adventure for a while as long as you can always return to "The Grid" when you are older, or ill or starving or tings break down or whatever.
    And the grim reality is that we can only play at being "off grid" because outside there are Billions of Humans that do not

    Speaking from a top storey carpenters experience.
    Put a thick plastic membrane over your floor and check a channel out of the bottom plates for drainage here and there.
    Even build a slight camber on the floor.
    Once the roof and cladding is on you can cut the membrane out and expose your nice dry particle board.
    Hindsight is 20/20 though

    I agree that Melingoed are nice fellas. I used them for the trusses in my car port.
    If you’d of asked on the Emlyn Facebook pages, I’m sure there are plenty of people that would’ve lent you 4 or 5 tarps or some 4x2 CSB to put up a temporary roof. I’m about a mile from Emlyn and I’ve built a 7m wooden framed sauna and tool store over the last few months. (I still have a day job).
    Admittedly, I’ve got a warm house to live in whilst making stuff, and I know it’s been wet. Mind you, we had a hint of Spring a few days ago and patience is a virtue. Hang in there and shout if you need a hand.
