The translation unfortunately takes half of the greatness of this sketch. Westerplatte joke has something to do with pronunciation of W.

This is about pronunciation, where she pronounced the name in English and the original pronunciation is in German.

English V is the same sound as polish W. But English W sound is same as polish Ł.

In Polish W we pronounce as English V. Everybody in Poland knows what happened there during World War II. We are proud of soldiers who fought there. They had NO CHANCE to defend the pennsular in Military Transit Depot. Before the war the plan was for the garnison to hold out fot 12 hoursThey but they were doing so for all 6 days withoud food and ammunition (the reserves were only for 1 day). That was the first battle of the Geman invasion of Poland. Those 200 soldiers were fighting against 3400 German soldiers, a battelship, 2 torpedo boats and 60 aircrafts. Rhey were a symbol of strength ans morale and encouraged all Poles not to defend themselves. A radio news every day, from the day of the invasion 1 Sept 1939, said "Westerplatte is still defending themselves". That raised evey Poles spirit. People knew that it wouldn't be long but they waited every morning for the same news. That was the firs sentence on the radio, the most important then. Our soldiers killed 50 Germans and wounded 150. 15 Polish soldiers were kiled, 20 wounded and the rest captured. When Westerplatte surrendered they were congratulated by Geman genarals for their braveness

Different cultures often laugh at the same stuff, but the punch line has to be delivered perfectly and jokes are culture specific. Reason why stand up comedians are usually limited-to one country where people find their jokes funny.

I respect you very much for your perseverance and attempts to smile sincerely. I am sorry that your audience asks you to watch stand-up in Polish. I think that the vast majority of the jokes are impossible to translate into English. I think Polish people should think about whether it's really worth recommending such performances to you. I think Piotrek Szumowski would be a cool suggestion, because he does performances in English.

The gist: I Polish we do not pronounce the letter W like in English. We pronounce it as an English: V letter. So do not say: Westerplatte but say it as: Vesterplatte.

Nienawidzę stand up. Pomyślałam, że może tym razem się przekonam. Przekonałam się, że miałam rację, że to potok chamstwa i wulgaryzmów dla motłochu, życiowych frustratów, ludzi bez kultury. Dlatego odpisuję się od Pola, niech sobie sam ogląda polską patologię z sobie podobnymi ale beze mnie.
