The Latissimus Dorsi Muscle

- A neuromuscular efficient core is required for the latissimus dorsi to provide the necessary forces to carry out some function at the glenohumeral joint.
Neuromuscular inefficiency sets up the foundation for repetitive stress and associated “frozen shoulder”-type symptoms. The latissimus dorsi decelerates lateral rotation, flexion, and abduction of the humerus in the glenohumeral joint.
When the insertion of the latissimus dorsi is flexed, the muscle plays a role in tilting the pelvis in an anterolateral direction.
A bilateral contraction leads to hyperextension of the lower back, with accompanying anterior tilting of the pelvis.
A muscle this size, covering so much of the posterolateral ribcage, will also have an influence on diaphragmatic function.
Any movement of the humerus will have an effect that extends into the thoracolumbar fascia and further down the kinetic chain.
The latissimus dorsi generates pain in the mid-thoracic area, including the posterolateral abdominal region.
Pain of an aching nature is often reported in the inferior angle of the scapula and the posterior shoulder.
Referred pain travels down the medial aspect of the humerus into the forearm, hand, and fingers.

This is awesome info. That explains why people complaining of arm pain present triggers at or around that thick part of the muscle. You’d think the pain is coming from the arm, not the back! 😮Thank you!

Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
I have ankylosing spondylitis and my spine seems to be fused i didn't go for a xray yet. Just wanted to know does severe spondylitis affect your back muscles like lattissimus dorsi and other muscle. Because my waist and chest size has been reduced a lot.😢
Questions is there such thing as an upper, middle, and lower lat, or is it just a singular muscle?
Thank you for your feedback 🙏
Were you satisfied with your answer?
Pretty sure it’s one muscle but some parts can be activated more than others
What happens to the lat when you got inward shoulders?
so in a seated cable row why do people say it works the lats since you are pulling horizontally
It doesn’t pulling horizontal hits your reardelts and rhomboids
App name please
Doctors can't find my pain I'm learning anatomy 😅 so is teres major and minor under lats or I have pain can't find it but I feel like it's in teres major minor or lats I just saw now that lats catches with humerus so probably it's lats causing pain I feel pain when I do chest press shoulder press a little bit lateral shoulder also arms bach like triceps overhead extension would you plz help with any informations

I’m going on with some muscle pain this exact muscle it’s going on two weeks now. The discomfort it brings you tho sucks
how is it now ?
@@kotgame781 I was doing 20-30 minutes a day of Yoga, laying down was okay but trying to roll to the side or trying to get up was miserable. After the third week I had no progress so coming into the 4th week I was going to get time off of work if it didn’t go away. I got a little depress that weekend and got hammered and next morning it all went away like it never happened. It’s an ugly pain don’t know how I got it.
@@RichRich06it went away just like that? Impressive. Hope mine also does, it sucks
Me:yeah whatever!
