- 2016's LEGO Star Wars 75098 UCS Assault On Hoth received A LOT of criticism & I certainly agree that for an Ultimate Collector's Series it's lacking in some areas. But looking at it thought the lens of a playset makes the set seem way batter. The Echo Base Door, Ion Cannon, Shield Generator*, trenches, and more make for a fun and complete version of a Hoth Rebel Base all in one package for the high price of $250.

The tan pieces are actually meant to represent sand, which serves dual purpose. Not only does it give more traction for the Rebels’ boots, but it also acts as a deterrent for Darth Vader!

This is a pretty decent set imo, they just really shouldn’t have marketed it as a UCS set.
Or as an assault. They should've just named it "Echo base".
@jacobstgermaine8353 That's my personal thought: they didn't know what else to call sets like this until they came up with the Master Builder Series line in 2018.
That's what I personally see this set as: a MBS set before the official MBS line was created.
its pretty obviously a master builder series, not UCS. You dont normally see a lot of play features in UCS sets, to me its similar to the Master builder cantina or cloud city

The minifigures are really good, but the builds look terrible, aside from the giant opening door/main base area. I don't think this set's bad at all, it's just not UCS. It just isn't.
They should just make it a master builder series, like the cloud city set

My theory is it was called UCS back when the At at was gonna be available with it. That way, when you put the two together they made a cool diorama. But, after the AT AT was retired, they didn’t want to change the tag UCS, so they left it alone...

The Assault on Hoth is decent if it was a play set. As a “UCS” set, it does not work for me.
Honestly this set suits my needs perfectly, I actually have too many imps and not enough rebels in my collection, and it will look pretty good against my AT-AT. By itself it's not a very good set but paired with other things it can really work!

The reason there is only 3 shield generator dishes is because if you added another, it would be “half a stud off”. This means that you wouldn’t be able to build a wall around it on all sides as you would need jumper plates that would then block the generator dish from sitting on the ground flat. I hope I explained this well!

"Defense of Hoth" would have been a much more fitting name.
If this hadn’t been marketed as a UCS and was instead presented for what it actually is (a large “battle” playset like the 2009 Battle of Endor on steroids) then it would be a lot better remembered. IMO all the individual builds that make up this set are pretty solid and the figure selection is pretty good if at least a bit one-sided for the Rebels. It may not be one huge vehicle or building, but all the small builds and minifigs spread out does make for a since sense of scale. How a collection of smaller builds as one bit set compares in value to a single large build is a matter of opinion, but as someone who attempted to set up large spread-out battles as a kid (had a small table to display whatever my current battle was) I would have definitely wanted this one.
I find it sad that they couldn’t make the power generators right, but 4+ set is more accurate. But all together it isn’t that bad of a set.

I believe that they didn't put four shield generators because the mechanism to blow it up wouldn't work, but that's my only idea to why they wouldn't put four shield generators

One of the things I really don’t like is that they added a lookout tower because they thought it’d be a cool play feature. On a UCS set.
You make this a play set, and get an AT-AT to go along with it then it would be *chef kiss*

I honestly don't care that it was labeled as UCS. I just don't think it's a good set. I think it was overpriced since it had a ton of small pieces and I just don't really want a ton of random builds all together.

I absolutely hate it, LEGO has made me hate anything Hoth related because the amount of sets they have made. There are other way more interesting planets but they seem to love only Hoth

How the hell are you gonna play with two snowtroopers and tons of rebel soliders, equipment, weapons, a huge rebels base and not to mention a fricking jedi (sorry not fully trained jedi)
@@fakeflash0794 well there is the wampa, also when playing and having the enemies be the same outfit, you can just “revive” the fallen ones and act like they’re other members. It’s called imaginative playing. You don’t need to have dozens of snowtroopers to act like theres a big army you have to take down
Great review. I bought this set NIB a while ago but haven't built it yet. I got an IKEA table with a smooth white top and plan to build a Hoth battle scene with this set and various other Lego Hoth sets to include Snowspeeders and the new and 2014 versions of the AT-AT Imperial Walkers.
Ryan should do a series called "Not Quite" where he reviews off brand lego.
I like how they can’t add a extra a dish in the shield generator but can add the path in the trench you see for 2 seconds not even, while you see a Clare view of the shield generator.

If you wanted a real assault on Hoth, you could get 2 AT-AT sets. The AT-AT set has 2 snow troopers, so if you had 2 AT-AT sets, you would have 4 more snow troopers and 2 AT-ATs. Of you wanted the assault to be more realistic, you could have some AT-STs and maybe get a few snowtrooper battle packs.
I definitely hope you do a video on the Osprey cancellation at this stage - I think so many people are keen to hear your detailed analysis over less "time sensitive" stuff like this (even though I really enjoyed this video)

Say what you want about this set, but this is an incredibly nostalgic one for me. Got this for my birthday in 2016, I was so happy. Although I never actually finished it for a long time, because I lost a piece and I didn’t have a spare, so I couldn’t finish the set for the time. Idk why I didn’t just get a replacement… lol.
I have the UCS Cloud city and I love it, but it's not very displayable, it has a very good interior and I got it for stop motion so I don't mind how it looks on the outside.

I think Ucs sets should be display focused, but these big play sets are also pretty cool.
I think the wampa cave is actually based on a deleted scene where c3po removes a sign from a door and a snowtrooper opens it, and is then grabbed by the wampa

That rebel with the blonde beard that also appears in the imperial shuttle set is based off of the background character in Return of The Jedi that was retconned to be Rex if I remember correctly.

My R3 has angled printing too. Sad. As far as the power generator only having three rather that four parts is because they couldn’t get the exploding feature to work properly with more than three. That’s why.
If or When The UCS Mos Eisley Cantina comes out you should do a Comparison between these two sets

One of my personal favs. I couldn't get to buy the wampa cave or other hoth themed sets as a kid since my dad was a jerk but it makes me happy they included a thing from every hoth set to that date. Wish it had a probe droid tho

I hope LEGO remakes this set, but x10 better. The set would be accurate with the same minifigures, but updated, two more Snowspeeders, a lot more Snowtroopers and Stormtroopers, an accurate sized Wampa cave solo build, a more detailed and accurate interior, and a more accurate shield generator.
And the main door to be big enough to in theory allow the Millennium Falcon to exit.

I'm super sad that my brother destroyed this set when I got it. (He was 6) I mostly really wanted it for the minifigures and snow speeder. Also the snow trooper speeder I love speeders
They could’ve added white flooring inside the base to put your troopers, with pipes and what not. Echo Base also had those railings and support things, could’ve had more space. Like Ryan said a Barca tank room, and an attachment for Vader to walk through. Could’ve used more snow troopers and Vader to make that entrance scene.

UCS Hoth wasn’t bad. LEGO made a large mistake with the generator, but other than that the set was pretty accurate. It makes sense that it has multiple parts because Hoth wasn’t just the echo base. This set probably should have been MBS, but that didn’t exist back then. This set is really good for what it is.

the cave entrance is actually from a deleted scene from star wars was the block of the door in the movie but it was a wampa door so you can't say about it but nice lego piece to recreated
I really do agree that this should've been split up. I like the concept, it's one of the best scenes in the entire movie series for imaginative play and the modular idea with other sets is perfect, but it should've never been UCS, making the "core" of a modular scene this expensive innately priced it out of the range of most kids, and it should've just been called "echo base".

I don’t know, but my guess is there is only three shield generators so they could get the exploding mechanism to work. For some reason it might not have worked if they made it longer.
I really like this set, and I always have. But there are some large in-accuracies that could’ve easily been fixed with a slightly larger price like maybe $350 - $400. I wish they added an AT-AT around the size of the 2009 one, leia, General Veers, an AT-AT Pilot, 2 more Snowtroopers, 1 less Rebel Trooper (just to be realistic with the price point), a small version of the Hoth Medical Bay, and a more accurate Wompa cave, they’d also have to sacrifice the shield generator but it doesn’t really fit in with the set too much anyway. Lastly, the set (if it was to be released now), should be marked as MBS and it should be called Defence of Hoth, even if it was to have an AT-AT and more imperial stuff, I just feel like the set focuses on the Rebels so the set name should as well.
I have 3 ultimate collected series and all of them are pretty good being the AT AT , AT ST and the slave -1
I have a lot of snowtroopers and like 3 hoth rebels so I need this set
