I love my mess kits. Nothing works so well as that long handle on hot coals. Blackie's "can't cheat the woods" is Julia Child level masterclass. Bon appetit y'all's.

Thanks Blackie. That is a brilliant idea to use a stick to make a handle for the U.S. Army mess kit.
I spent 4 years in the U.S. Army myself in the 70s and 80s. Three of those years were spent in West Germany.
I could count on one hand the amount of times we used a mess kit in the field on FTX.
Our Mess sergeant was lazy. If we used mess kits he would have to set up 2 big galvanized steel garbage pails
with immersible diesel fired water heaters inside them to get the water hot enough to clean the mess kits.
Mostly if you were in the Battery are and you were fortunate enough to get hot chow you ate off paper plates.
I spent all my time in my unit in a Lance Missile firing platoon. Two of those years as Section Chief.
That meant we almost never were in the Battery area. We mostly ate C-Rations
( actually they were called MCI, Meal, Combat Individual ) which were not so bad as long as you had a way to heat them up some.
I have one of those Mess kits myself Blackie. I have the older WW II style knife which has the thicker handle.
I use that little knife every day in the kicthen. It is great for slicing fruit or spreading butter on my NY Rye Toast.
Here is a link to 3 of them up for bid on Ebay. So far high bid is only $15.00.
    www.ebay.com/itm/THREE-ORIGINAL-WWII-US-ARMY-CAST-HANDLE-MESS-KIT-KNIVES-/323328135444
I think you will like the older WW II style much better. 10 hours left on bidding.

I picked up one of these mess kits for 2$ at the local antique store. It's dated 1965 and it looks spanking new. I cooked eggs and bacon on it and things got a bit sticky. It was hard to clean but I got it done and put it away, this was two years ago. Think I'll pull it out and give it another go the Blackie way.greetings from Dallas, TX.!

When I use any of my stainless steel over a fire they get black from the ash and soot. . Over time they get really black from the use which is the way I like them. Thanks for the tip about the stick , that will be done on mine real soon. Never had the Bacon flavored Spam , I like the original and if it's cut in 1/4 inch slabs and fried for a while they crust over and taste like thick bacon.

oh man i am jealous of u for a few reasons! one, u beat me to a video of cooking with that mess kit, and two u found bacon flavored spam! and thanks for the tip on using water to help keep them from burning on the surface of the pan, i fried up some spam sliced last month on the stove top and they burnt in random spots. i would really like not to paint the outside of the kit if i can, but if it really makes a difference i'll do it.

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  8 лет назад

the paint is a optional choice..i found it helps will even heating ..plus when something like pine sap gets burnt to the bottom of pan..you can easly scrub the paint off and repaint later..

I stole a trick off of Cooks Country on cooking eggs.
I don't even try to NOT scramble them and constantly scrape the bottom of the pan back and forth , lifting and setting the pan from the heat to keep a really low temp. They come out rich and creamy instead of light and fluffy, but they don't stick or burn. It takes about twice as long to cook, but half as long to clean up after.

  • @maineiacacres

Toss a couple sticks on the fire to build it up and boil some water in the pan when you finish eating. Should clean it right up for ya or make it easier at least.

The idea that the US Army mess kit was only used by soldiers standing in line at a Field Kitchen is nonsense. The Official Army name for the mess kit was Meat Can, and then later, Meat Pan.
During the 1970s, while stationed in east Africa, I heated up many a can of C Rations in the meat pan or canteen cup. Only REMF (rear echelon mother lovers) always had a field kitchen to serve them their food.
Anyone who wants to learn the true history of the meat pan/mess kit should read this PDF. Scroll down to the section about the meat can. history.army.mil/html/museums/messkits/Field_Mess_Gear(upd_Jul09).pdf

I served in the US Marine Corps Infantry for over twenty years. four years in combat. 13 months in Korea and 38 months in Vietnam. I never cooked C rations in a mess kit. Why would you do that? C rations already come in a cooking container,
a tin can. All you have to do is open the can, light a small piece of C4, hold the can over the flame and in 3 minutes your
Ham and limas are hot, ready to eat. We never even carried the mess kits to the field. No need.
