You have made me look like an old timer many times with your tips and hacks. Of course I always let folks know I am just copying a master. Thanks you for sharing all this knowledge.
Lengthy is fine! I appreciate the step-by-step, so we can watch the process, instead of shortening the video from initial to finished product without the in-between. The in-between part is the critical bit! Keep making your videos as long as you need to. Thank you Blackie
A few things: 1. I am really enjoying the Ground Pounder Series. 2. I’d say we are around the same age give or take a few years. 3. I have seen that twisted string mod on the poncho grommets before…in the surplus store on used Vietnam Era ponchos back in the early mid 80’s. These handles would be good to store strapped to the upper crossbar of an external frame back, especially a Roy Croft. Not hard to craft a replacement, but extended travel tends to recycle negligible weight versus constant fabrication. Which if you are going the Roy Croft route, then the M-45 Sleeping Bag Cover could be your pack roll to be strapped to the frame. Enjoying the show and the company, brother.
I enjoy the videos you make ,, you’ll never hear me complain about how long a video is because very one I watch I take something from it . I have always preferred to learn skills before I need them as to brainstorming my way through to a solution .. some moments we don’t have time to brainstorm . In my grandmothers yard was giant mimosa all us kids played under and up in .
Dang Blackie, you just keep coming up with awesome stuff. I always look forward to your new vids. It sure was nice to watch that Buck 110 in action. It was like watching my favorite action hero in a movie. Love the USGI mess kit too, so nice to see some old tried and true gear getting new life breathed into them. Thanks for the lesson, it made my night. I hope everyone here has an awesome weekend!
Hi Blackie! I might tell you I didn't have any objections to a longer video. I enjoy the crafting videos maybe more than anything else so this was a delight for me.
Thanks for sharing Blackie. Enjoyed the whole thing. I can tell you've got countless hours invested in running that 110. Your carving aptitude is enviable! Thanks again!
Love the mental aptitude of your creations. I wish when I served we had time in the field to learn to be creative out of the box. But we were constantly pushed with tasks of digging in for fox holes or filling them in and moving out. Walking for days.
well used Buck 110, just like mine...I had to retire my old one because the blade is already concave from use...got myself a new one a few years back...still in its box for posterity...I use Mora knives mostly now....no love lost when it gets beat up...i now have a new project for my c.1944 US mess kit and its more recent, stainless steel repro...
That's cool. I get the idea is to be able to improvise a handle in the field, but I think I might use one the many sticks or dowels I have from brooms and tools and make handles for the cook kits.
You could do the same thing with the stick on top of the pan - or - an aluminum foil wrap around the stick close to the coals. I still think the stick on top would work easier. Good tips, like always. Thanks.
Wow, I always love your experience that you share with us!!! Thank you. By the way I found a Buck 110 at our local WM. $60. IK an not believe I never owned this knife before!
in the book of trees thats the real name for it it grows in asia and the med /north africa people who made a pilgrimage to the holy land in the late 1800.s would bring one home to plant to show they had been there seems a lot of folks from the south did
Terrific "hack" Blackie ! Of the various field cooking sets/kits out there, if you had to choose one, which would it be ? Don't apologize for the length of this. If you took the time to make it, it's worth watching !
the m40 is a great kit for stove /wood fire and its my favorite "set" ......the u.s. mess kit is great for one person who wants to cook quick easy meals
It's so great to watch the calm controlled cutting of someone who has years of experience makes it look almost magical unfortunately I am in almost equal parts lazy and cack handed to the point where I might even lose a thumb ( anyone's interested cack handed is an old English insult slightly worse than ham fisted)
Blackie, Great tip, used this for many years, however always thought the US could have made a better one, and it should be an issue item for todays army……
The set is designed to have chow dispensed into it, not as a campfire cook set. Thin stainless sucks to cook in! In the modern Army no one cooks their own food anyway. Hell, I've heard they no longer issue the canteen and cup, which I think is an amazing piece of gear. It's all chow hall or MRE's.
Hi black, not craping on you video in any way, because I do enjoy the videos you put out, , but I've found that at least for me an old omelet( the type the folds in two) pan works excellent in the field, , it gives you two pans, , or two pots , depending on what your b
You need is, but the best feature is its ability to bake quick breads such as baskets, cornbread, muffins, etc, you just pour your batter in, stick it over the fire, and after it sets up a bit, you flip it, you might have to flop it a few times, but with a little bit of experience it's easy to get very good bread, backed all the way though and not burned
Mr. Thomas, For some reason or another, I wasn't liking you. Maybe, you reminded me of someone. But, I'll admit you've grown on me. No long moon light walks in the offing. Probably won't go out of my way to meet you. But if pathes cross I'd get you a cup of coffee, and talk a little while. Your channel is fun.
its a shame the manufacturers haven't been working with soldiers to improve the mess kit. If nothing else, they could offer "aftermarket" upgrades the soldiers and civilians can buy..
Hey Mr. Blackie I absolutely love your channel your my go to guy for information on cap and ball revolvers, I had a question if you had time. I just bought a 1851 Navy, I watched as many videos as I could possibly find on it and how to use it properly, I have shot black powder before but I only have flintlocks. My question was that I’m having a hard time taking out the barrel wedge, I even bought brass punches and a rubber mallet, I’ve been really gentle with it trying not to scratch anything up but it just won’t budge or come out, maybe I’m not doing something right, but I tried tapping it a lot harder and still nothing. Any advice would be amazing and appreciated very much! I know your a busy guy so I understand if you don’t respond right away
ok use a file to clean out the wedge slot in the base pin it will get a wire edge and kinda bite the wedge.. next check the wedge make sure its still flat and has not taken a warp this can cause problem hope this helps ya
@@BLACKIETHOMAS thank you very much for the advice I ended up putting it in a strong vice- padded with some wood and got a small set of welpers (used for welding- I’m not sure if that’s what they actually call them) and I was able to clamp down the spring and tapped out the wedge much easier. So I went to go shooting this afternoon- I got some CCI #11 caps and none of them would go off, I tried pinching them and even putting a few grains of powder under them- while pinching them as well, and nothing, I tried two and three times on the same cap but none of them would go off. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? Should I replace the nipple or is the hammer spring too weak maybe?
@@BLACKIETHOMAS thank you so much for your help I just did what you recommended and it worked- I bought a spare wedge as well and that one pops in well, and with a good tap from a brass punch and rubber hammer it will pop out! I greatly appreciate your advice!
