It's okay to leave the skin on the potatoes to save the extra work - it's also delicious! This was the first ever mess kit cook I'd ever seen. My reproduction Swedish mess kit arrived yesterday. Can't wait to bring it on my next hike. Thanks for the inspiration!
Tks for your kind words mate. I don´t doubt you´ll love your SMK. Yeah, you´re right about the potato skin. And you know what, usually I don´t peel them. Boiled, fried of even mashed, always with skin. Only when making french fries, I put the jacket of. Anyway, tks again and good cooking on your next hike. Cheers.
I have the same mess kit and for me this is extremely relaxing. I find that cooking outdoors is one of the most relaxing things to do. Please keep up with your videos. I also have an interest in WW1 history and being from the US I am living through your videos and seeing those places I will one day see. Thanks and keep up with your great videos!
Thanks John. I do have some more recipes (and ideas) for the 'dirty can', but wished I had more time for going out to the trenches again (and overcome some practical issues). Will see what I can do. Stay tuned. CU.
Greetings from Pennsylvania USA.Absolutely wonderful! You are helping me learn new ways to use the Swedish mess kit! Are you going to make more “cooking in the trenches?” Your storytelling is Wunderbar!
Tks for your kind words Jim. Yeah, that dirty kit works just fine. More cooking in the trenches, well, I was planning on making a whole series of them, but my priorities have shifted a bit in recent years. I have some new episodes in mind but can't tell when I'm able to realize them. Anyway, your comment is inspiring. Atb from the trenches. Cheers
Ive got the same mess kit and I like the concept but I've got a much better bushpot and strainer that would make that a snap and I also suggest beer batter. I'm going to try this excercise this summer in a large roadless wilderness area in US. I'll catch some trout and do it up that way. I can't wait for summer.
Yeah, there's a variety of kits and pots that will work, it's the concept. And yeah, I like the beer batter too, but forgot that one important ingredient. And the way you do, catching your own fish, is much more better then a fish from the supermarket. Have a nice summer, Cheers.
Great afternoon out in the rain.I was waiting on a water based meal when you thru me a curve with the fish an chips.Nice hot meal an alittle R&R.Thanks for taking us along.Nice touch with the incomming!
That's a good old English Dish done the Dutch way Hans. The fish looked very good - chips a bit thin I thought. Mind you I wouldn't have said no at all. I trust you're well where ever you are. Good going. Mark
That pack is the real deal! I love the way it turns into a chair. I been hunting for one of those Swedish mess kits. eBay is ridiculous with their prices for one. Another fine video... great job.
Prices may be ridiculous, but it only hurts when pushing the 'pay button'. Once you start cooking in them, the pain vanishes. Tks for watching and comment. Cheers!
I love fish and chips and cooking in old mess kits. Yours looked good to me! Awesome ending!!!!! I saw you on Spijkerpoe's channel so I came by to watch a couple of videos. You have a new subscriber! --- Chris
See ya mate.
This is awesome! Subscribed! I love your M40 videos! What's your cleanup process after this? What do you bring to get all your stuff ready for packout?
Thanks, I appreciate it. After the cooking and when the oil has cooled down it goes back into the bottle where it came from. Boiling a bit of water and clean it up with a pan sponge. Or, at day trips, just take it home to clean it there. I bring the ingredients I need, or want to use, as shown in the vid. (fish, potato, flour, salt, water, butter, oil) and carry them in my backpack. When I forget something I have to improvise with what is available. Take care, atb from NL
Very entertaining and enjoyable to watch, thank you. How does the aluminium pots in the mess kit hold up with the oil temperature, any issues with warping at all ? I have one of these kits on its way to me and look forward to learning more cooking ideas for it. :)
No problem at all with the hot oil. The alu pot held its original shape and all parts still fitted together. No warping. This kit is a good choice for experimental cooking. Wish you all the best mate. Enjoy it!
Well, I just poured the oil back into the bottle and the rest of the cleaning is standard procedure. (Actually it was not much more then dipping dry the remained oil)

I absolutely agree with you about the nutrients. And very funny you say this, because some of our (former) friends didn´t like to come over for diner because we never peeled the potatoes. Half the billy can to cook in. When poured back into the bottle after the cooking it was only one or two table spoons less.
