Yup, his mother is clearly unable to take care of herself, most likely to due even more debilitating mental illness than what he starts out with in the movie. They're funnier than American comedians. Then again everyone is funnier than American comedians.

And I enjoy most superhero films for being entertaining spectacle films, I don't really find them to be offensive, but it's not a genre that's for everyone.

Shows how his mentality not fitting into society ends in madness, and him lashing out against those who don’t understand his pain.
It's not like Batman just hunts him down to beat him up.. He's stopping him from committing widespread attrocities. Doesn't matter how mental someone is if they're a danger to people around them they need to be stopped.

Joaquin Phoenix is a phenomenal actor. I am sure we will look back and this movie as a memorable performance. Not sure why anyone would doubt him as a choice for the roll he will prove everyone wrong.
