Pretty neat bit of trivia there! I didn't even realize the name on the Dragonfly differed from that of Ace, on the box. Or perhaps I spotted it... but I never put two and two together.

True story. Buddies of mine from college told me a story of their Dad who was an AH-1 Cobra pilot from Vietnam. Their Helicopter unit was based in New England, and in the early 80s got a call from Hasbro, whose headquarters was close by and they wanted to come out and get some photographs of the Cobras for a new toy line. So they came out, interviewed the pilots and took pictures of the pilots in their flight gear and all the helicopters on the ground and in the air. Well, one of the pictures was my friends' dad, and he wore his Cavalry Stetson and had a mustache at the time. So the theory is that he was the model for the Dragonfly pilot Wild Bill. They got a bunch of free Hasbro toys that week too. Both brothers later went on to be Helicopter Pilots for the US Army as well and flew with Task Force 160, The Night Stalkers,. US Army Special Operations Aviation Regiment.

Yeah my uncle was a helicopter pilot and saw my Dragonfly when I was kid and said, “hey, cool Cobra”. I was like “this is GI Joe” and so began a confusing conversation about the copter that the DF was based on and the name of the bad guys.

At mid 80's, I was in my 12 when uncle Frank came over from the U.S. with that awesome Christmas gift. Nowadays I'm a 50 grow man, and I still preserve that G.I.JOE Dragonfly XH-1 among my dearest possessions, including the box whom front cover painting is a piece of art itself. I also have saved both its Blue Prints and catalog. Action figure Lt/W. Hardy "Wild Bill" as pilot of course; and "Fast Draw" which I got it a decade later, taking the artillery back seat. Thank you uncle Frank wherever you are. Thanks Toy Federation for keep alive the kid within all of us. Greetings from Dominican Republic.

The Dragonfly was based on the USMC AH-1T Improved SeaCobra.
It's an attack helicopter. Although it falls in the Bell Huey family of helicopters. Most people think of the "Huey" as the UH-1 series of utility/support choppers designed for troop and cargo transport and medical/causality evacuation.

I was born in 1974, and I amassed a pretty huge collection of vintage Star Wars, He-Man/MOtU, Transformers, and GI Joe figures, accessories vehicles, and playsets over the years. And I was always VERY careful to make sure I had all pieces, parts, weapons; and I kept things really organized. Even as a young kid, from age 9-10 or so, I was more into having a complete collection moreso than actually playing with the toys All the stuff was in my parents' attic, carefully and neatly organized in boxes. I always thought it would be stuff I kept my whole life, maybe even pass on to my own kids if I ever had any. I came home from college one Christmas break around 1993 or 1994, and decided to pull the stuff out and look through it all for fun. I couldn't find the stuff anywhere in the attic, so I asked my dad about it. He said he had been organizing the attic to make more space, and he threw all the stuff away because it was junk. I was livid. The worst part was that there wasn't even a lack of space in the attic. My dad just always thought that keeping the stuff was childish and a waste of time, and he didn't like that I was keeping it all. He always brought up I Corinthians 13:11 -- "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." Just thinking about it still makes me so angry all these years later.

FYI: the Dragonfly is just an Updated version of the Hughes AH-1 Cobra that was used in Vietnam but the Hasbro people talked to Military Expert of the Time and they were given the WISH LIST that the Marine Corps had since they were still flying the Cobra in 1986 the Marines got the AH-1W SUPER COBRA the USMC still fly the Cobra but today with the New Engines, Avionics and Weapon capability it is Called the AH-1Z Viper which is VERY CLOSE to the G.I. Joe Dragonfly. I grew up in the 80s and collected G.I. Joes and also watches the T.V. Show and had a very strong interest in Military Technology that followed me into college and into the Military where I served in the US Navy and worked in Aviation. I am a BIG Fan of the Sky Striker and got to see the last deployment of the F-14s and their homecoming in 2006. I also ordered one of the Haslab Sky Strikers that has been sitting in my desk now for over a month still in the box unopen because right now I do not have a place to put it since we are having some work done to the house and the Loft where I have my collectables is just full of the stuff from the rooms that are getting new windows and getting new paint but all the work should be done by mid-June hopefully and I will have the ability to get to see my Sky Striker a toy that I have not put my hands since 1990 when I gave away all my original G.I. Joes away when I went off to college. Looking back I should have just put all those original mint condition toys in boxes and put them in storage somewhere instead of giving them away because they are probably worth a pretty penny since I used to put the planes on the ceiling with fishing string and everything else on book shelfs behind plexiglass.

My first action figure was a 3 3/4 Snake Eyes with straight arms that didn’t swivel. I still remember going to the department store in 1982 and choosing him over the other dozen plus figures available. I eventually had a room dedicated to GI Joe figs…1 side was Cobra, the other Joe…I had every figure available and every vehicle/structure (other than the air craft carrier). Soon thereafter my house burned to the ground losing everything 😕. Almost 40 years later and my home office/man-cave is full of 100s of action figures old and new…GI Joe, Legends, Black Series, Hot Toys etc. 😁😁😁
I will definitely check out your store if I’m ever in your neck of the woods!!!!!!

This shop gives me childhood wood. I would LOVE to have a place like this near me. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And can you imagine teaming this shop up with one of those people who can refurbish old toys to look new? 💦

the vane alone for the whale is $30+ just for 1. its insane. but there is people on ebay and etsy that sell 3d printed vanes, shrouds and many other pieces for the whale becaues of how many are broken. and they are high quality to for a fraction of the price. I know some people dont like repro. but its a good way to complete the whale. I got a whale, dragonfly and a rattler all complete. plus I just picked up a complete Terrordrome recently for a great price.

Dragonfly is based on the AH-1 Cobra helicopter, but for obvious reasons they couldn't call it the Cobra, so they went with Dragonfly because of the modified appearance.

So the store I frequent that has collectibles and memorabilia and toys and all that. I was there when some gentleman came in... and he has the entire line of GI Joe from 1982 to 1984... all still carded. Every single character, Joe and Cobra. Every single Marvel GI Joe comic, CGC 8 or above, and something like 150 assorted BATs, Crimson Guard, and Cobra Soldier, loose but recently repaired with all accessories.
Talking with the owner after the fact, because that was a haul he could not buy, he told me that it was easily a 15 to 20k collection that he could not justify spending that much lucre on.

@@toyfederation Northern Virginia is about all I'll say. Don't wanna risk doxing myself.
I will say though, that part of the reason was that the owner was opening a new store and needed the money for capital, no matter how much he wanted the carded figures and vaulted comics.
He told me they'd make for a great display on a blank wall, but the guy was unwilling to sell piecemeal. It was all of it or none of it.
