Hello friends, today we will talk about appendicitis, which is the inflammation of the appendix.
The appendix is a small organ located in the right lower abdomen at the junction of the small intestine and large intestine. In humans, it doesn't have any significant function, so it is considered a vestigial organ.
Appendicitis occurs when this organ becomes inflamed, which can happen for several reasons. The opening of the appendix can get blocked by hard stool or swelling from an infection, leading to inflammation.
Symptoms of appendicitis can include pain that starts around the navel and then moves to the right lower abdomen, or it can start directly in the right lower abdomen. Other symptoms may include fever, nausea or vomiting, loose stools, or irritation during urination. In late cases, if the appendix bursts, the pain can spread throughout the abdomen. Appendicitis is usually seen in young children, but people of any age can get it, from very young children to the elderly. So don't think that only young children can suffer from this condition.
When you visit a doctor for appendicitis, they may examine you by pressing on your abdomen to see if you have any pain, which can indicate appendicitis. Blood tests might reveal signs of infection, and sometimes a bit of blood in the urine can suggest appendicitis. An ultrasound can often diagnose appendicitis clearly, but in some patients, it might be difficult to see the appendix. In such cases, a CT scan can almost definitively diagnose it.
Once appendicitis is diagnosed, doctors usually recommend a laparoscopic operation. Laparoscopy has many advantages over open surgery. In open surgery, a small cut is made in the right lower abdomen to remove the appendix. However, with laparoscopy, the whole abdomen can be examined through a camera, and if there is any other problem or if the appendix appears normal, alternative diagnoses like Meckel's diverticulum or ovarian cysts in females can be considered. Laparoscopy also allows cleaning if an infection has spread throughout the abdomen. The small cuts made during laparoscopy lead to faster patient recovery and a lower risk of infection.
With advancements in medical technology, surgeries can now be performed not only through laparoscopy but also through mini-laparoscopy and robotic surgery.
If appendicitis is not treated in time, the inflammation can worsen, leading to the rupture of the appendix. This can cause pus to spread throughout the abdomen, turning a simple condition into a life-threatening one. Our advice is to see your doctor promptly if you have any symptoms to prevent severe inflammation and infection. Early surgery can help avoid all complications.
