Incredible! What Tone! Ray has one of the most refined right hand techniques. Such great detail in this video. This is how the true classical guitar is supposed to be played. Bravo!!!
I had never heard this piece before. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Reussner maybe 20 years ago. I was just a kid and probably listened to him with a modicum of drool perched on my lip. I had no idea what a master he was. I still have an autographed CD of his saying, "...maybe you could teach me something sometime." This, after he allowed me to play "Love of my Life" by Queen for him (my own transcription) and probably on his OWN GUITAR! Wonderful song, beautifully played, by a kind man.
The negative comments are typical of the amateur. I close my eyes, leave behind my preconceptions and enjoy this music for what it is, not what I wish it to be. If I didn't like it I would move on and find a version I really liked. Even better yet I'd practice diligently to strive for something this beautiful. I give this performance 5 stars.
Just gorgeous playing Ray ! You totally capture the lyrical asethetic of the Segovia legacy ! Bravo for such an incredible lesson in tone colors and nuances ! Can´t really tell you in words how much I appreciate this , but I think you know what I mean ! Just masterly ! Marc
Beautiful and very, very powerful right hand. I've been looking for a good video with this piece for a couple of years on and off. I'm glad to finally have found a good quality one.
Ohh wow, I want to learn how two play this on guitar now. :-) I've always wondered how it would sound on a guitar. Well performed; I can't imagine every playing it so perfectly
I admire the feeling and honesty of this guitarist. I will definitely be listening to other recordings by him. He plays with expression and warmth and the rubato is spot on. Maybe just a tiny bit too quick for my liking but apart from that a superb interpretation. Ive heard so many technical wizards who can play liszt and paganini effortlessly but they cant play the ave maria to save their life which is afterall a technically much simpler piece. Im thinking of violinists here. Same with pianists. Lang lang is a technician who again can not play a relatively simple piece like the moonlight sonata first movement. His playing is like ice. Heifetz is a great exception since he was technically almost perfect and had alot of bravado yet his ave maria is the only version ive heard which moves me to tears. He was exceptional. Caruso was another one who made me cry. This is what music is about and like a 19th century listener who remarked he was much more impressed by what moved him than what amazed him i can give the same words as my own.
Its like you need two minds to play this, like drawing a picture using both hands simultaneously. I will learn to do this before i take my last breath..
Well, we all have our opinions, but one might consider that Mussorgsky lived during the Mid Romantic period and that this is very much in keeping with the performance practice of that time. It is also just how Andres Sevovia transcribed and played this piece that was not written for the the guitar. Reussner's performance really is beyond reproach. Most would agree. This interpretation is full of depth and very much alive... and who are we to argue with Maestro Andres Segovia?
Hi Ray, very nice piece and well played... Your guitar sounds very beautiful and has a strong projection. Can you give me some information about this guitar, I might interested to have one if the price can fit my budget. Thanks !
So then it stands to reason that applying the same critique to the performance of a work from a composer of the Romantic period to one by a founding father of the Baroque period might not be so fair? We are talking about this performance here, after all.
Hmmm.... we should all be so blessed to be criticized for sounding so much like Segovia. I recall at a Parkening master class that a student was accused of sounding more like Parkening than Parkening. Must be suicidal over that.
This version( by Segovia) has two major harmonic errors. One in 1:17 and 2:30.I really don't understand why!! Mussorgsky's harmony is superb in those places and in the whole work. Yamashita's version is a genuine one in those matters.A very sensitive guitarrist Reussner anyway.
Ive heard this played by eliot fisk and in my opinion it is not good. Ive also heard it played by an asian guitarist and again not good. Segovia is without equal with his interpretation but i can honestly say the guitarist in this video is second only to Segovia. A brilliant rendition. It is my very favourite piece which afterall is an arrangement for guitar since it was conceived as a piano work. The guitarist here fills it with warmth just like segovia did, a warmth missing from fisks interpretation. I have never heard it played by either williams nor bream but i can imagine williams would play it colder and more technically perfected which robs so much from the humanity of the music.

5 stars from me too!!
A troubadour sits at the entrance to an old castle and sings a melancholy song - how perfectly captured !
you don't know how much i like this song. I've had it on repeat all week.
bravo ray!!!
wunderbar !
Love this piece
Excellent playing and a beautiful sound!
It looks so easy, and yet it's so complex...

I fully agree!
i haven't heard all guitar players on earth, but after some years of research i come to the conclusion, that this is the best guitar tone on youtube.
+ubelstesje feel free to post a better guitar tone than this!
It's been years since I heard it on guitar. Thank you, thank you!
A great guitarist and a great guitar maker. Wonderful tone.
Beautiful and very, very powerful right hand. I've been looking for a good video with this piece for a couple of years on and off. I'm glad to finally have found a good quality one.
This is how I want to be able to play, this nicely! His right hand is awesome, just like the drawings in aguado's book. Wow.
Brilliant performance.

Oh Segovia was his teacher? Awesome.
What is the tuning on his guitar?

do any of you aknowledge that this person is one of Andrés Segovia's finest disciples?
Segovia liked him playing Bach during the 1965 masterclass in Spain.
