It has, and for multiple reasons. Dominique Dawes, Amy Chow, and Tasha Schweikert inspired an entire generation of younger girls who didn't look like the typical American gymnast to try the sport. Dawes was considered a phenom in her time by fans, however she was also very harshly judged both nationally and internationally, and always overshadowed by more traditional looking gymnasts like Shannon Miller, Dominque Moceanu, and the Russian and Romanian girls. Her lack of consistency in the biggest events also somewhat justified her lack of media attention, yet she's still the only American gymnast to ever medal at 3 different Olympic Games. Over time American judges became more accustomed to seeing gymnasts of different body times (and colors) competing, and it became less of a focus on their previously biased judging. This coincided with the change in the judging system around 2006 when they went to a more transparent, open-ended scoring system. When Gabby Douglas won the Olympics, that doubly inspired an even younger generation to actually embrace the sport and Simone Biles cemented that trend 10 years ago. At the same time, the international judges became more accustomed to seeing dark skinned athletes competing at the highest levels in multiple countries. Elvire Teza of France, Daiane dos Santos of Brazil, and the Downey Sisters of Great Britain helped contribute to this trend. Looking specifically at USA Gymnastics, the unceremonious retirement of the Karolis and abolishment of the old system promoted a more positive, healthy, safe, and inclusive environment for gymnasts of all colors, and the success of American gymnasts on the international stage (led by Olympic champions Carly Patterson, Nastia Liuken, Gabby Douglass, Simone Biles, and Suni Lee) has continue to enhance the popularity of the sport across all demographics. While it was considered unusual for a black girl like Dominique Dawes to want to be a gymnast back in the 1990s, today it's common place and embraced, and the results of these changes are reflected in what you see.
I actually got rather provoked when that rule was brought to my knowledge in conjunction to S.B's vault. - I mean.. They're punishing safety/security, for crying out loud! What's making it even worse, is that it turns that outrage of not rewarding her for her difficulty due to what they claim to be security reasons in to a bloody paradox. This rule proves, without a shadow of a doubt, they don't give a flying fuck about the gymnasts safety!
These ladies are spectacular!!! Such excellence and such grace....ALL OF THEM! So Great seeing Simone Biles back in such great form. I'm so happy for her on her personal achievements! What a role model!
She didn't really come out of nowhere, she was scoring like this in 2021 as a junior and easily won the Jr fx title. But was out last year with an injury. But for her to be back at this level after a knee injury took her out for a year is major.
The US Women are truly excelling out from under the old regime and I'm proud to witness that a different leadership can still inspire the best and brightest. An athlete must be intrinsically motivated to be coached to greatness. The older more mature a gymnast is in this sport the less they have to be denigrated to achieve.
15.700 score today is super rare. BILES is go big or go home vault. If she makes it. Shes gonna win Vault and AA for sure. Its gonna give a nega score boost total.
I don't think Biles needs her coach there tbh. It looks as though she doesn't need the potential assist and could score even higher [not that she needs it].
Love how comfortable and confident these women look, congratulations to everyone behind the scenes also, for making these athletes feel safe and protected.
i see dominique dawes, gabby douglass and simone have had a real impact on american gymnastics. smthng looks real different about this generation of girls 🤔 #teamusa
Yes, it's wonderful seeing all of the beautiful African American gymnast on the world stages. My eyes can barely believe it! And they are all such GREAT GYMNASTS!!!!
@tkhaskin agreed. i have been watching gymnastics since the early 90s. this is absolutely wonderful to see. same in tennis since the william sisters. you know we can't help but to do the damn thang when we show up 😆

I agree. I'm a Josc fan. I think there's something about her body type that gets her more deductions (not that they'd ever admit it). I can't wait to see her peak.
If he assists her she will get 0 (zero) points. But if she happens to need help of course who cares then. The -0.5 is because he is on the podium, if he touches her she will get no points at all
The face of US gymnastics has officially changed! 🎉❤😊
All I see are a bunch of beautiful black faces 😁

Shi’s bars and Simone’s vault…just great! Almost perfect.
The fact that Simones Vault would have gotten a 16.2 there if her coach wasn't on the mat is INSANE. Wow.
She got deducted for it?
Yes, 0.5

@@QueenGry I see your point, but I believe the rule is there to discourage gymnasts from competing skills they aren't ready for
@@QueenGry right? No issues when they spot on bars. Simone goes at least as high as that bar.

Kaliya is amazing. Crazy how she came out of nowhere to be one of the best on floor in the world

The issue is that it’s a very dangerous vault. I promise she will want him there if things go wrong.
Shilese Bars was very impresive
Love how comfortable and confident these women look, congratulations to everyone behind the scenes also, for making these athletes feel safe and protected.
Wow Kaliya on floor very impressive!

TRUTH IS TRUTH!
JUST THE FACTS!
SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!
I’m wondering if they’ll be three blank women on the podium for the 2nd test in a row.
Was I hallucinating or was Kaliya’s wolf turn the first time that skill has looked pretty?
I thought the same thing! I don’t hate the wolf turn like so many do but hers got my attention for sure! It was actually quite lovely. Lol
Grace’s wolf turn was always on point.
Was about to say this!! The only time I have seen it looked controlled and aesthetically pleasing. Beautiful!
It was beautiful!
She is not waving her arms around, I think that makes a big difference with the wolf turn!
I’m such a Kaliya Lincoln stan
The second pass. So beautiful
Shilese floor should've been on here too it scored a 14 with an out of bounds
simone runs so fast on thoses vaults. her short little legs just fly!
Joscelyn roberson was way underscored in this competition
I agree. I'm a Josc fan. I think there's something about her body type that gets her more deductions (not that they'd ever admit it). I can't wait to see her peak.
@@HB-ey2dk I've been saying that for years.
@@rosee7011 I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking it. She reminds me of Shawn Johnson sorta
I’m secretly hoping that Simone will score a perfect 10 E score with that double pike at some point.
shi toe point 🤩
The fact Simone would’ve been going 17+ if she did her YDP in 2012 quad lol
You forgot Simones Cheng
Why does Simone get 5 tenth off of her vault here? I def did not see the coach assisting.
She received the deduction for the coach being on the mat.
He was still on the mat to assist, you see in her 2nd vault there isn’t a deduction because Landi isn’t standing there
With that score she can afford a coach spotting for her safety
If he assists her she will get 0 (zero) points. But if she happens to need help of course who cares then. The -0.5 is because he is on the podium, if he touches her she will get no points at all
@@leykimayriJulissa Gomez sure wished she took that .5 deduction.
I see the US having potential for gold on vault and floor at this point but possible none who would even medal on bars or beam.
