I remember back in NZ in the early 80s there was a car sales yard called mainline cars on the corner of atkinson ave in otahuhu me and mates used to go there to have a drool they had all sorts of muscle cars coming and going on their yard camaros, mustangs, XU1, SLR 5000s,GT falcons etc..most if not all imported from Aussie.I remember one particular saturday morning we rocked up and there were 3 yes 3 gtho phase 3s in a line one was yellow one was red and the other was purple. If i remember right the window price was $27900 yes $27900 take your pick of colour...Damn if only we had a crystal ball back then lol.

Adjusted for inflation, that’s $131,000. You still wouldn’t have afforded it 😂

The E55 340 V8 in a manual format was a very fast Charger but never had the fame the E38 3 speed and E49 4 speed enjoyed.
I was fortunate to have a job for 8 years in a muscle car dealership in Adelaide all way 50 in stock.
I had the pleasure in 1971 of working with and driving Corvette Big blocks, Mustangs 351, 428 and Shelby's, L34 Torana's and the A9X's , XU1's and even the rare XU2 V8 not forgetting the Monaro's especially the 350's and the 327 V8 a great start in 1968. I have driven every GT Falcon from the XR 289 to the RPO 83 Phase 4.
When the fuel cost scare happened in the early 70's the market dropped out and these glamours fell in price and became harder to sell, madness.
The saying goes only if I knew then what I know now.
I miss those day's 1971 to 1980 and regret not shedding many of them.
I could have owned and was paying, LJ XU1's for $3000, GT Shakers 4V for $3500 to $5000. E49's $3000, L34 Torana's $5000, Corvette big blocks $10,000 right hand drive.
To finish off There are a couple of cars I can't forget I drove or owned for a while that rarely get a mention.
The Ford Escort Twin Cam fun to drive short engine life.
Ford made a one of for a company executive a Falcon XY GT 428 V8 with all the bells and whistles available at the time, it was black with white trim. We had the car in stock on 2 occasions once it was a repo and found in the bush and the other was a purchase from another dealership, believe me it was a difficult car to sell being such a oddball.
Today I still remember the correct model numbers and the things to check when confirming the honesty of these special cars. I could write a book?

Write the book PLEASE, up load on Amazon so I can download it. You have way too much information for it to fade into obscurity, it will also be a great help to help push away the BS that so may "experts" spout nowadays. Only a few days back I was watching an "expert" prattle on about what I knew was not correct. Please write the book and stuff as much as you can in it. :)

The man who was responsible for the Phase III designed the exhaust system for Howard Marsden all done at HeadMod Engineering by John Bennett. A genuine Phase III had a modification to the Holley Carburetor and more importantly the cooling system. I doubt very much that any true Phase III exists today as only a handful of people actually know what the modification to the cooling system is. This modification was true to standing the Phase III from the shaker GT, and the modification was able to allow the Phase III engine maintain better heat soak than any other factory car. I personally spent many years studying the many benefits of heat soak with John and can back up his work on this subject. Ford were very slow at paying there bills which lead to John parting company with Ford and Head Mod Engineering. The 351 Cleveland engine was an engine that was very sensitive to proper thermostats and in particular to a proper radiator, which is why the XA Falcon was a dismal failure in the cooling system department because Ford ignored the written warnings from their parent company in the States and forged on in the XA with a crossflow radiator. There is so much more to this tale that many in the industry just will not face up to, and to those who know the truth wow to those who should know better.
