Splatoon 3's Seasons OBJECTIVELY Failed

  • Over the last year, Splatoon 3's sales have dropped over 90%. Going from 10.71 million sales in the first 7 months to just 1 million sales in the last 9 months. Regardless of how you feel about the last year of Splatoon 3's updates, Splatoon 3 tanked in sales. I believe this can be attributed to a year of underwhelming, controversial, and divisive updates that never missed a season when it came to dividing the community.

There's really no excuse for how they've rolled out kits. Those things do not require extensiv development time, they're literally recolors of existing weapons with two parameters tweaked and yet here we sit almost TWO ENTIRE YEARS post launch and we don't even have second kits for every weapon. Complete and utter insanity.

For me the biggest issue has been that all of the cool ideas are time gated.
    - challenges
    - Unique Splatfests
    - Tri-color
    - Big run
    - Eggstra work
Most if not all of these things, took a significant amount of time to develop and all of which (With the exception of Tri-color), have been post launch additions.
This is what has caused most of these seasons to fall flat for me.

This video summed up everything I think about Splatoon 3. But the biggest thing for me is the update cycle. A slow seasonal update cycle DOES NOT WORK for a fast paced game. Splatoon is constantly changing and things don’t stay the same (remember when people thought pencil was a bottom three weapon in the game?) its bizzare how easily they thought we would adapt to a new update model after being on the same one ever since the game started. It would be different if we got a shitload of content in the updates they leave us with but we don’t.

    • @ZeusMakesDoodles

  • @freez1e299

I also really wish we’d receive more customization with the seasons. New shirts are nice and all but imagine if every season we got a new hairstyle for inklings and octolings, or maybe a new eyebrow type or a different style of pants. I’ve been waiting AGES for long octoling hair or an inkling ponytail with bangs but we’re stuck getting recolors of crocs and sunglasses.

Honestly my biggest issue with the season is how the handle the catalog. Like once you complete one you start to feel burnout, then you wait a while until you start to recover from said burnout, just to only have to mega-grind due to being on crunch time. I feel like an easy fix would be to have it to where once a new season drops, your old catalog gets “stored” and the new one takes precedent. For example, once you complete the Sizzle Season catalog, Harmony gives you your Fresh Season catalog back, so you can continue it without having the pressure of a time limit. That way we can rest as much as we want and not have to worry about missing out on catalog rewards. However, it would require more work because the catalogs would be stacking on top of each other

As someone who played the all the previous games, it kinda just feels like they took the content we'd normally get in a year of updates and stretched it out to last two years instead. Like the content we get isn't even bad, everything just feels unbearably slow compared to before. We still got a few bad kits in Splatoon 2, but it didn't feel as bad because no one had to wait 18+ months to get their second kit and we knew third kits were coming. Salmon run hours weren't the best, but they were still better than challenge hours and it only took a few months before the devs made salmon run more consistently available for longer hours with less downtime. Challenges have worse hours and we had to wait an entire 6 months for them to be made _slightly_ better.
The whole thing feels as if the game was meant to hold onto players as long as possible by not giving us too much content too quickly, which is concerning and upsetting because now we're almost two years in and it looks like Nintendo might be ready to move on anyway.

As someone who played splatoon 3 the hour it released, I was extensively dissapointed with the update cycle. I remember how after launch there were tons of neglected weapon kits as well as terrible balancing, and nothing happened for 2 months, leaving us to wonder what was in store. I told people immediately; "Guys I think that Splatoon 3's seasonal update cycle could be disastrous for this game's playerbase" it wasnt hard to sniff out after nintendo fumbled with the first what.. like 4 or 5 seasons? Even then, the updates were consistently less than was expected and less then the game's predecessor. Yet, people had absolutely glazed this game beyond belief. "Oh I'm sure they'll fix it, the game only had a rough start" however, as this game is closing in on its final year, nothing seems to be improving by nearly as much as we need it. Case-in point; Nintendo will never do what their playerbase expects of them.

    - [ ] 1 new or returning Salmon Run stage every other month
    - [ ] 1 new kit every other week

I got Splatoon 2 after the updates so I never knew how it was there but for Splatoon 3, most updates were just a massive disappointment. It just felt like they did the bare minimum to even keep people playing and some of the stuff like X-battles or the jukebox should've just been there at the release and not 3 to 6 months after. And the online connection being worse than Splatoon 2's just made this game feel like a downgrade from Splatoon 2 and it just took them too long to actually fix this game. For example, private battles crashed like all 3 to 4 matches if because if someone left while you tried to start, it just crashed and it took them like a year to finally fix this and it's still worse than Splatoon 2. Or the fact that you can't be in the home-menu for more like 10 seconds while waiting in the lobby or being in spectator mode while you could stay there forever in Splatoon 2. Although this isn't something big, for me and a few other people I know it was just annoying and then we have the events. Big Run is fine as it is and I like the change of the reward system. Splatfests might finally get more fun with the next season although it's still annoying that you're forced to use this Splatfest shirt and that you can only play turf war. And Eggstrawork is in my opinion just bad and boring because it feels repetitive after like 3 rounds but I have to admit that the concept of Eggstrawork actually sounds good to me and I don't know how to make it fell less boring but maybe that's just me. And then we had the maps that were just disappointment after disappointment because the returning maps got mostly worse even if it were just small changes like the one block on the left side in Manta Maria that isn't there in all modes anymore, but the last seasons actually gave us some better maps and I feel like the old maps could actually be fixed with some good updates (unlike mincemeats rework).
At the end, I like Splatoon and just hope for Splatoon 3 to not feel worse than Splatoon 2 in those aspects but for some of them, I just kind of lost hope like the online connection and although a lot of things I said here sound negative, I actually like Splatoon and just want Splatoon 3 to get better.
Thanks for anyone who actually took their time to read this and if I got anything like the times for something wrong, feel free to correct me

I would argue that the solution here lies somewhere in the middle, personally; as much as there was some fun in the spontaneity of Splatoon 2's content drops, I feel like the seasons were a miss less because of the fact that they _were_ seasons, and more just because the seasons themselves lacked content; blaming the seasons feels like missing the forest for the trees. That said, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't significantly less attached to Splatoon 3 over time compared to 2. I think things like small weapon drops during the midseason patch would've gone a long way to making the seasons themselves feel less barren. Not to mention the fact that, for some reason, every weapon only got one kit in base game, and only seems to be getting one singular second kit overall? I know it's just a consequence of the amount of weapons vastly inflating, but it still feels kind of lame.
I also feel like citing sales as a metric isn't an entirely fair judgement here, nor is it really even a particularly comparable or relevant one? The circumstances through which Splatoon 2 and 3 launched and progressed are vastly different; the Switch was in its infancy in 2017, so it's inevitable that the sales numbers and the game's fanbase as a whole would crawl upward slowly. Presently, the Switch has more or less reached market saturation. The people who became interested in Splatoon over the course of 2's life were primed to jump onto 3 as quickly as possible, leading to the early ten million, but the game has always kind of had more of a "core audience" kind of appeal, so perpetual growth was never really likely. If Nintendo released playercount numbers, I would consider those more relevant, and the thumbnail honestly led me to believe you were going to cite playercounts somehow. Realistically, while a 90% drop in sales volume is pretty rough, the immediacy with which it sold nearly on par with its predecessor was likely enough for Nintendo to consider it broadly a success, and I think the drop could just as much be because of the volume of other major Nintendo Switch titles making it less likely for the average random customer to take a chance on it.
...oh god i've become the person who leaves long youtube comments. i'm so sorry.

I’ve been returning to Splatoon 2 since getting Splatoon 3 at launch
My biggest hope for 3 was to get bigger maps with more elevation, gimmicks and more arena like design to focus more on Splatoon’s identity as a casual shooter
    Obviously we didn’t get that
I don’t think the seasonal model is bad but it’s clear there isn’t enough creativity out into the maps which the quality of the game depends on to me
If there are bad maps I cannot play the game
It’s sad to see great concept art of maps with junkyard/mad max aesthetics made up of ramps and know we never got close to a single map like that
Good art direction is also something s3 lacks
The idols represent nothing about “anarchy” or “chaos” neither do the modes that use such words. Majority of the maps don’t adopt any sort of anarchic or post apocalyptic aesthetic and could’ve been in s2.
Also I’ve never completed a catalogue. I understand the intention might be to keep a kid with way too much time on their hands occupied for over a month but when the game is boring af there’s no motivation to continue.
Splatfests are pretty disappointing too. I loved Splatoon 2’s fests they were an event I looked forward to alongside the community but during the entirety of s3 I’ve never had as much fun. The Zelda fest was alr but that was due to the new exclusive map which was an incentive used in s2 that worked (shifty stations) so go figure. Splatfests in s3 are making an already boring over bloated game even more boring.
A more unique thing I don’t like is s3’s art direction in comparison to 2 but that’s just me.
The only thing I prefer in s3 are the quality of life features which tbf should’ve been there since s1 on the Wii u.
I’ve never totally dropped s3 tho.
I always return every 3 months but the content keeps occupied from 3 days to a week at most.
I’m just hoping they take their time with s4 and soft reboot the series. New maps, new characters, new locals. Finish off the trilogy and all that shite.

Challenges are the saddest case. That was their excuse to add tons of constant new and fun ways to play, but them making them limited time completely broke it. instead of going in and seeing what you'll find to play today and have it be cool, instead it's just an extremely forgettable feature that you go "oh, that's happening now" when it does. The reason that it being limited time doesn't work wheras Splatfests and Big Run do is since there's no excitement to them. They're awesome but do you really mark your calendars and follow the news on what challenges come next? Of course not. And so it just becomes a forgotten feature only there to make the occasional map rotation more interesting. It's genuinely sad.
Same thing applies to Eggstra Work, you can't make people come back for limited time events if those events aren't a big deal. That only works if they're already consistently playing but the game has gotten stale for myself and I assume many others. Splatfests and Big Run work since they're a big deal, Challenges are arguably even cooler then those two but there's a reason nobody cares about them anymore.
My other issue is just the lack of content in each season. Sure, it's a pretty decent drop of stuff but how much are they really adding in them? 2 maps, sure, they get added to the rota, 2 new weapons most of the time (or specials), that's easily the coolest part, a bunch of weapon kits, cool, we don't get enough but sure, and a few miscallanious features that are rarely that exciting. Honestly, for an update, not bad, but then you take into account that these happen every 3 months. For a game like Splatoon 3 months is a dang long time for the game to pretty much be exactly the same, for the seasonal model to work the season updates need to be _huge_ to bring people back into the game and make it fresh again, but they're not. Chill Season 2022 was Drizzle Season 2022 with a few extra bits, not a refresher for the game. Add that onto itself over and over and the game gets much better eventually but it never becomes truly fresh since we get content so rarely and when we do it's enough to stay entertained for, like, a week, maybe more if you _really_ like one of the weapons (The only time I truly got back into the game was when I discovered I loved Painbrush so much and even then that only lasted a month). If you're going to do an update every 3 months you better make that update make the game feel fresh for that 3 months but it doesn't. Especially in the final month the game just feels stale.
The ironic part is if the stuff was more dripfed instead of a season it's work much better, since you'd have a reason to keep playing waiting to see what would come next instead of a long period where you know full well you will get nothing. Even if we had the exact same amount of content it would just keep people way more consistently engaged then the "big" season drops they want to draw people into.
Lastly, it appears that we're only getting 1 more season after Fresh 2024. This does not put a good taste in people's mouths, including mine, as unless we get another year of content surprise the game will just end on an underwhelming note, with no weapons having 3rd kits like Splatoon 2, with less stages then Splatoon 2, and not too many (if any) truly game-changing inclusions compared to launch. Say what you want about Clam Blitz, that truly was a game changing update and we didn't get any new _perminant_ upgrade like that to Splatoon 3, so while it is objectively much more full and better we're still kinda in the same game that we were in at launch, and finishing with less overall content then it's predecesor (or at least it feels that way.) It's extremely hard to feel hopeful that the game can change when it looks like the expiration date is right around the corner.

My biggest issue with the game is the Catalog. I paid 60 bucks for this, why is there a Battle Pass that locks content behind a FOMO fueled grind?! I booted up Splatoon 1 and 2 quite often to play a match or two, and log off afterwards. But now, there are daily wins, and a battle pass that almost requires you to play daily to get it all. It makes the game feel like a job, and killed it harder than any bad updates could

Back in Splatoon 2 we got one map each month along with one new weapon and 3 New Kits for the majority of its life span. In the beginning, maps and weapons were added like every two weeks, later we ofc only got new Kits, no new weapons. Much better concept than in Splatoon 3

Part of the reason why EPD 5 moved towards a seasonal model was to prevent crunch, something they’ve grown more cognizant about since New Horizons. So I doubt they’ll change course for Splatoon 4 in terms of reverting to the S2 update model, they’ll just try to improve the quality of each seasonal update.

Splatoon 3 was my first time playing the series and i loved it cause i could jump into everything with everyone as the game was starting. However with the catalog being time based before it goes away i started it grind it which quickly made the game feel more like a chore isnt of being fun. Burned me out and been getting back into it recently but with the missed content of catalogs i havent finished makes me sad and not want to play the game. Otherwise the game has been amazing for me but i hate how the system works cause it makes it a chore to play rather than fun and pick the game up whenever you want to play.

I could literally excuse all the flaws of the update system if they just gave us MORE AND BETTER KITS. I had to wait 1.5 years to get a second kit for my main and while it is a good one I can't imagine how scammed explo players are feeling right now. It is genuinely not that hard to NOT fuck up kits by just using your brain. The first four seasons should have given us every second kit and the last four the third kits. It was so depressing getting season after season with either kits I don't play or kits that just straight up suck. And only getting like 8 every 3 months? Screw that.

in my opinion they should make 2 small updates that whould add few things(1/2 new weapons, one of the updates adding in new special), and 1 big (adding in smomething completly new like new class, more customization of character, and returning things like 2 old specials per update, also reseting catalog) , then again 2 small and so on
and for these 2 small updates to be random and 1 big to be once every 2/3 month's
it whould not only make game more chaotic (in a good way) but also keep players, by them wanting to play w new weapons/specials/kits/maps.
for me i get bored after 1/1,5 months becouse of nothing being new so for me it whould be perfect.
also i looked at this reasticaly, i know they can't make 50 new kits in just 3 month but i'm sure they can make even simple 1 weapons and 1 special for 2 seasons, and put in a bit more work in third one by adding new fuction which they sometimes do in little patches like foldable shirts

Splatoon 3 was my introduction to the series, I got it in December of 2022, but I really wish I could play 1 and 2. I don't have a Wii U, and most pre-owned copies of 2 I've seen have been extremely expensive for some reason (or people just sell the box and not the game). I feel like I'm missing out because of the updates not being as great as the ones from the other games, as well as a lot of people complaining about how Deep Cut doesn't feel as interesting as the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook (which I agree with, they feel kind of bland). Also, the game's Splatfests feel extremely unbalanced and the amount of times Frye has lost compared to Shiver really annoys me. The game's lifespan is already almost over and we don't have nearly as much content as 2 based on what i've seen and while i'm excited about Side Order, I don't think it's going to save this game.

3:00 you say this but do you have any figures to compare it to? There’s research on video game sales in general, and they drop off rapidly with 40% of total sales happening in the first month, and ~55% in the first quarter. What about the huge waves of layoffs across the gaming industry and how that reflects the overall health of the video game market? Or the fact that Splatoon 2 was an early Switch game and Splatoon 3 is an end-of-life Switch game?
You speak really authoritatively and rely on this figure as the only objective piece of your analysis, a number you’re taking at face value without looking further into it or explaining to the viewer.
You have a nice voice and your script is otherwise great. You have great potential, I’d love to see more research put into future videos though.

My main hopes for splatoon 4 when it inevitably comes out are a removal, or at least rework to the season mechanics. and a return to 2-team splatfests. tricolor was fun at first, but it's flaws showed up real fast and they make the mode more of an annoyance than an actual fun time.
also, lil extra theory here: I'm willing to bet that when the next nintendo console releases, they'll port Splatoon 1 onto it. probably not splatoon 2 and 3 since I expect switch games to be compatible with it by default, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do it for splat 1 so that newer players can experience the first game.

I'd say they're on par in terms of updates.

  • @BatterMancer

Honestly I don't think regular game updates have a major impact on bringing in new players alone. Nintendo needs to push ads with these updates if they want to sell more games. Just look at regularly updated games like fortnite and apex, whenever a new season starts youtube and any site with adsense is flooded with ads for them. Maybe since Splatoon updates are free, there is no incentive to spend advertising money.

My man wants the squid game to sell better than Red Dead Redemption 2 did in the same timespan. Joke aside, there are a lot more factors at play than just "Nintendo updates bad"
    - Splatoon is a console exclusive, while the Switch sold fantastically, not everybody owns one
    - The audience is a lot smaller, most people who wanted to play it probably already bought it at launch, with some waiting to grab it for cheaper
    - Splatoon at it's core is a game for everybody, but mainly played by adults who don't have as much time anymore as back in the splatoon 1 and 2 days to play, so some might not have even bought it
    - Most people who still play the game are veterans with insane skill, getting into the game is very difficult. I took one year break and keep getting destroyed in multiplayer (and for whatever reason Nintendo keeps matching me against people in the top 2500 but I digress)
TL;DR: yeah the updates are kind of bad, but them being good wouldn't have changed much. Instead of "why this update model failed", this would have just been a "why splatoon 3 is a hidden gem"

And there a few other reasons why Splatoon 3 is inferior to Splatoon 2, Splatfests have been oversaturated with too much mirror matches for the most popular team, having bad problems with it's matchmaking, balancing issues, especially with weapons, specials and subs as well as having a flawed seasonal model, I feel Nintendo should go back to interval drops in order to focus on fixing issues like matchmaking and balancing, but still give us free content.

Yes! Great video, I like how you critisied the game without being overly negative or stepping into toxicity/wrongfully bashing the devs.
I basically agree with all your points, and it sums up how I feel about the game as a 2 old head.
However, there is one point I'd disagree with you on. At 4:47 onwards for a bit, I disagree with your wording. All splatoon games are live service games, they're just not monatised like most of their peers.
The biggest bit of it I disagree with you on is is that I'd say 3 is far more of a live service game compared to 1 and 2 due to its season model. 1 and 2's random sporadic drops are far more akin to single player games and multplayer games not adhering to a live service model.
However, seasonal structure is reflective of the major push of live service, constant player engagement. The catalogue system entices you to play every day and creates FOMO. The shell out system entices you to grind tons for exclusive stuff and season unique rewards, further increasing FOMO. The challenges are limited to make you feel like you have to play them else you'll miss out. The big season splashes are advertised and meant to be "major game changing updates" because those are what usually bring in former players and fresh blood (in live services in genral, and it works when done well).
I agree with you that 3's exection is actually making the game less alive, but imo that's because it's trying to be a live service, compared to 1 and 2 tuat weren't.

  • @moonbun690

Personally I think it's unrealistic to expect every update or season to have peak material. I do agree with some criticism, for example: certain modes being locked at certain times (challenges, etc), and closed hallway map design.
I don't understand what you mean by "dry spells" between seasons. Seasons last ~3 months and then we usually get 2 new songs, at least 4 new weapon kits, a new gimmick, and new maps. And within those 3 months there's Big Runs, Splatfests, challenges, and now Side Order. That's enough content. And the regular gameplay cycle is addicting af.
It's totally normal to put down a game for a while or months at a time. This is a criticism I have of the gaming community at large, not just splatoon. It is normal to burn out at times. That doesn't mean the game "fell off" and it's not always a marker of your boredom with it.
idk maybe that's just me tho
